The Movies expands

Stunts & Effects pack adds anonymous daredevils risking life and limb in foolhardy stunts, new visual effects, sets, props, and more.

by

Over the last couple of months, it has looked more and more like Lionhead's cinema-based tycoon-style The Movies would be riding off into the sunset.

Last month, Activision canceled the planned console ports of the game, bluntly citing underperformance on the PC as the reason. Earlier this month, an administrator on Lionhead's official forums confirmed rumors that the company planned to restructure into two teams, which would seem to leave little room for a sequel to an underachieving franchise.

But if the series is going out, Lionhead's making sure it's going out with a bang, perhaps one followed by a slow-motion "airswim." In association with Activision, the company today announced the expansion pack The Movies: Stunts & Effects for release this spring. The expansion will add stuntmen and their death-defying feats to the game, a movie-making toolset, visual effects, and new sets, costumes, and props.

A price was not announced, but the original The Movies retails for $39.99 on the PC. For more information on the series, check out GameSpot's full review of the original game.

Sadly enough this game doesn't give me enough freedom. I can only choose from scenes and i can't create somethin i actually want. I'd like to be able to determine which action every actor does, from which angle it's filmed etc. I also want to be able to choose more than 3 stars for the movie. But it's probably too much to ask for, even though I think it's possible. It could all be better, but it's a nice game after all.

It sounds AWESOME! I was sort of getting bored (just a bit) of just doing the same thing over again, so I can't wait for the visual effects part. Sounds great!

The Movies, i think is cabaple of carrying many expansion packs like the Sims, but much better than it.

It could be either great or lame, depends on what they mean by new movie-making set. Cause in all honesty, midpoint in the game where you were allowed to make your own movie, the midpoint that was commercially advertised at large, you just didnt feel like making the movie cause you had very, very minimal control.

This is hella good news...I spent hours making films on the game.

I'm excited about this expansion as well. However, I'm mystified by the 'underperformace' statement. There's around 65,000 user made movies that have been uploaded to the Movies' website. There's no telling how many haven't been uploaded. I've had a few complaints about the stock footage not meeting the demands of my imagination, but I just work around it. Personally, I love the game. But I can see how it could be doing poorly; people want a quick movie-making process, and that's just not available in the game. Oh well.

I'm not so sure the game flopped for the reasons you suggest. Honestly it seemed like the game had been hyped for SO long that most people were bored with it before release! Very sad for such a truly good game.

Hopefully this will actually let you script/create your own scenes, instead of just using the few canned scenes in the original game...that is why the game flopped. People were expecting to make their own movies, moving their actors around like in The Sims. But instead, you basically just spliced together stock footage. Badly constructed stock footage, as none of it fit together very well.
