The Metal Gear Solid Movie Is Still Happening

The Metal Gear Solid movie is still happening. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts told Collider that Metal Gear Solid is "probably the most important franchise to me on the planet." He praised Hideo Kojima's creation, saying it's a "genius, idiosyncratic work." He went on to say that he recently has been meeting with Kojima himself and that's been "like a dream."

As for how the Metal Gear Solid movie is actually coming along, he said the script is being worked on right now.

"That is a property that I will fight tooth and nail to make sure is done properly because it's so easy to screw it up and so easy for a studio to try and make it into G.I. Joe or try and make it into Mission: Impossible or try and make it into something that it's not," he said. "Metal Gear Solid needs to be exactly what it needs to be, which is Metal Gear Solid."

Vogt-Roberts added that Metal Gear Solid is somewhat unique in that, unlike a comic book that has had dozens of writers over the years, Metal Gear Solid has had "essentially one voice," referring to Kojima.

"I think it'd be a massive film, I think it'd be an incredible film, but it needs to be done in a way that completely honors what Metal Gear is because it’s a classic and it's a seminal work not just in video games, but in media," he explained.

It sounds like very early days for the Metal Gear Solid movie. Vogt-Roberts went on to say that the film could be PG-13 with a big budget or R-rated with a smaller budget.

"There are hyper-violent parts to Metal Gear but I would not necessarily call the hyper-violent part the core element of it versus like the tone and the voice and the philosophies that the characters exhibit," he said. "Those characters sort of are these walking philosophies, so I think nailing that part is far more important necessarily than thinking about the rating at this point, because right now we're just trying to get the best version of it."

The Metal Gear movie has now been in various stages of development for more than a decade, as the film was officially confirmed at E3 2006.

The latest video game movie was Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the sixth movie in the series. It pushed the entire franchise to more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

The next Metal Gear game is this year's Metal Gear Survive. It's the first new entry in the series since Kojima left publisher Konami last year to form his own studio.
