HBO's series The Leftovers returns to the network this April. It will be the final season for the show, and from the looks of the trailer, it may be the end of the world as well.

The Damon Lindelof (Lost) series follows Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), a police officer who lives in a world where two percent of the population mysteriously vanishes. The world keeps turning, but many people have trouble moving on. This leads to a rise in cult activity, like The Guilty Remnant, which is made up of chain-smoking mutes that disrupt the lives of others.

There is a lot going on in the new trailer, including the tease that Garvey is much more important to the world than he thinks. Could he be some sort of messiah? In addition, it seems the final season is all leading up to the end of the world.

The final moments of the trailer show us Nora Durst on the phone, while someone tells her she could see her family again. Durst lost her entire family during the event when a portion of the population disappeared.

The final season of The Leftovers returns to HBO on Sunday, April 16.
