The Last of Us to get character-specific special editions

Fans can pre-order The Last of Us: Ellie Edition or The Last of Us: Joel Edition for merchandise featuring each respective character.

by

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has announced two special editions for its upcoming survival action-adventure game The Last of Us. Due to launch globally on May 7 this year, the special editions will be based on each of the two main characters.

The Last of Us: Ellie Edition and The Last of Us: Joel Edition will each contain a mini book featuring art from the game, and a copy of The Last of Us: American Dreams Issue #1, the first of a comic book series that details Ellie’s back story. The mini art book will feature a variant cover exclusive to the special editions.

Each edition will also contain a poster and a DualShock 3 controller skin with the respective character featured. The Last of Us: Ellie Edition and The Last of Us: Joel Edition will each carry a recommended retail price of A$114.95 and can be pre-ordered from JB Hi Fi and EB Games.

In addition to this, users who purchase a special edition will also receive a Survival DLC, Sights & Sounds DLC and LittleBigPlanet Sackboy skins. Content details are as follows:

Survival DLC Pack
- Multiplayer bonuses (Bonus XP, melee booster, in-game currency, customisable character items)
- Bonus Joel and Ellie skins available at the completion of the single player campaign

Sights & Sounds DLC pack
- Official game soundtrack
- Dynamic theme for the PlayStation 3
- PSN Avatars, Winter Joel & Ellie

The Last of Us is Naughty Dog's first game outside of the Uncharted universe since 2005. It is an action-adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic version of the United States, and follows the efforts of the pair as they fight to survive. Developer Naughty Dog recently confirmed that the game will feature a multiplayer mode, but hasn't yet detailed specifics on locations or objectives.

I would get this for the comic and the poster. The digital stuff I don't care as much about.

I was excited to hear there are two different special editions, but they're like $120 in Australia dollars?

I want that soundtrack and art book, but that's just too expensive.

I already bloody pre-ordered it! NOOOOOOO!!!

Words cannot actually explain how hyped I am for this game.  Naughty Dog have been my favourite developer this generation and the fact they're doing a survival game just blows everything else out of the water..

Offering different items depending on which edition you buy is slightly aggravating though.. I'd rather just have the whole hog and release whatever else DLC for who wants it :/

Ah well! Roll on May!! <3

Thanks but no thanks. I just want to play the game. The regular ole' copy will do me just fine.

A fair deal is those who pre-ordered the collector's edition of any games should get all of the upcoming DLC free of charge.

For that price I'd expect a small figurine or the real artbook -- not a mini one -- to come with the pack. First day buy, but probably not the special edition.

That's a bit pricey.  Not entirely sure I think it's worth the cost or agonising over the dilemma of which edition to get. Dualshock skins, eh? Who would I rather have my hands over; a burly bloke or an under age girl? :-L As much as I can't wait for this game, I think I'll just pick-up the basic game.

I don't care if I do or don't get one of the special edition just aslong as I get the itself I will be happy. This game looks great, and I can't wait to play it!

There was a point in my life when I was a sucker for special and collector's editions of games.   Now that I have a drawer full of "collectible" items collecting dust, I realize I don't really need any of the extras.  All I want is a great game.  The only game I would still be willing to spend extra $$ for a collector's edition is a new MGS just because it is my all time favortie series.

This game being PS3 only is the biggest travesty to gaming since Dark Souls. I understand they want to pull people toward ps3 but its too late in the game for that, do you really think I'm going to buy one now after 7 years?

Basically, playstation pays out the ass for exclusive rights so they can deprive everybody else of something and have slightly more 'brand integrity' going into the PS4vsX720 battle for the future.. its got nothing to do with sales of the current console... all they want to do is   deprive everybody else.

All this leads me to do is actually DISLIKE Playstation more. I'm an xbox owner, but come the nextgen wars, i was originally planning to decide on each console based on merits / performance and work from there, possibly even own both. All playstation's anti-competitive behavior does is strip them from the running in my opinion.

While i'm on a rant, stop bidding over the f*cking DLC's too, just give them to everybody at the same time dipsh*ts. (looking at FC3).

EDIT*** One note, when nextgen hits, i know there will be a lot of exclusives, because it actually makes sense then, its not 7 years into the console lifecycle, and people are going to choose to BUY a console based on the exclusive titles, I'm specifically talking about how illogical and really, just anti-competitive/rude it is for the console manufacturers to be doing it now, which only has the effect to deprive gamers.

@jeremy- You know how the video game market works, right ? And competition, and monopoly ? Microsoft and Sony are competitors, and video game is just a business for them. You don't, ever, invite your customers to the competition, so you offer an outstanding product and make it exclusive to your company (console). Microsoft does the same: Halo & Gears of War being the two obvious examples. Sony won't offer one of it's game on the 360. Nike won't make an Adidas shoe.

@jeremy- And here we are guys the village idiot has arrived to talk about his disdain of the PS3 and his rock-hard c**k for the 360 and microsoft's various juices. Listen here, the PS3 has been delivering exclusives that amaze both fanboys and critics alike and pfft a travesty?! More like a success considering it did finally outsell the 360 and it had a 1 year headstart. The best games come near the end of its generation so why don't you go back to xbox republic and chill in the circle-jerk forums about your delusions of how the PS3 still has no games.

demayor
demayor

How shortsighted can a person be?   Even this late in the current generation, exclusives are important to a console.   As the next generation starts, the price of the current gen will drop even further.   Having great exclusives, will ensure that the current gene lives on for a few more years allowing the next gen to pick up steam.  Just look at the PS2.   It continued to be a great seller even years after the PS3 had been released.   The two consoles lived side by side.

Also, the exclusives of this generation will have an influence on the purchasing decisions of the next generation.  Sure; fanboys of a console will purchase the one they like no matter what the other does or offers.  But, new gamers, and people who actually think and research before spending hundreds in a console or other electronic item, will look at those factors before deciding what to buy.  So exclusives are important no matter if they are in the beginning of or the end of a console cycle.  It's matter of looking at the big picture and projecting into the future rather than just looking at the right here and right now.

terrusaet
terrusaet

@jeremy- How is this any different from xbox exclusives? Since you don't own a ps3 then how the fuck do you know what its like to be left out? The ps3 gets a few exclusives and you have the audacity to bitch? Do you know what its like to be considered a second-hand system in the gaming community? You have no idea what its like to see games from previous generations and DLC for games that you love go to another system and never come to yours. The ps3 gets the short end of the stick in virtually every aspect of online multiplayer and online services. For example Call of Duty, Microsoft "pays out the ass" for early DLC, now that sounds all fine and dandy, ps3 players can easily overlook getting DLC a month later but here's the kicker if you have the same game on both xbox and ps3 side by side on the same setup, tv, hdmi, etc. the xbox version will look better even though it runs off of a DVD not a Blue ray disc. Also the online servers for that game are better on the xbox. On the ps3 we don't get patches as frequently, the servers aren't as stable, we don't even get server updates nearly as much as the xbox does. It truly baffles me that you have the balls to come here and bitch about a few games while the ps3 users haven't really gotten shit out of the last 7 years. You sir are the epitome of a spoiled bitch who doesn't know what you have.

Sefrix

@jeremy- I'm going to go ahead and assume you do not own Halo or Gears of War and you received the 360 as a gift so you did not pay any money to such a horrible company as Microsoft who "pays out the a** for exclusive rights so they can deprive everybody else of something and have slightly more 'brand integrity'"

Perhaps next time you should take a step back and look at the big picture instead of just criticizing the console you don't own. Just a thought.

@jeremy- How is it anti-competitive? If games were the same across all platforms there would be no point in having to choose between which console to buy. Instead of whining that Sony is actually offering more unique games for its fanbase, why don't you complain to M$ to do the same thing? If you haven't bought a PS3 after 7 years then that's your loss. Don't go complaining that you're missing out.

jeremy-

@Total_mischief @jeremy- Actually there are plenty of examples of SOE making games to other platforms, as with microsoft owned content. Exclusivity serves the most important purpose during the 'early adopter', 'growth', and even 'market maturity' stages of consoles, where people are still buying them 'en mass'. At 'market decline', (ie, 2012-2013)... you will probably make more money selling to other platforms too.. Once nextgen hits, the cycle resets.

Go wikipedia.

Step 1) SOE makes planetside 2

Step 2) People buy Microsoft windows

Step 3) SOE makes a cool game and people buy it because its cool, regardless of the platform.

Step 4)???

Step 5) Profit

@traitor_651 There are about 25 comments, not one of which bothered to read my post (i made about 5 mins after the first and before the proceeding 25), where i clearly outlined that xbox do the same thing with DLC's, and i dont care about retarded xbox/ps fanboys (which half the idiots commenting are).

The fact that you see one sentence that seems slightly xbox oriented, and stand on your PS3 soapbox (without bothering to read the rest of my post, or the proceeding post), is actually just proving what a ridiculous 'fanboy' you are. I myself dont give a shit. I play PC.. and have done for 4 years, when nextgen arrives, LIKE I SAID, i will buy a console based on PERFORMANCE MERITS, not some retarded notion of fanboy'ism.

If you want to call that having my arse handed to me then sure, okay bro... cool story. Try reading a post in entirety before clicking reply though, just a pro tip bro.

I dont care whether its xbox OR ps3 doing it, i was just mentioning that 7 years into the lifecycle, exclusive titles have barely any effect on new console sales.. and its sad that it occurs. /END. Thats an undisputed fact, go read the console sales statistics.....

anyways....25 replies? Make it 50 kthx :)

EDIT... PS. if i happened to own a ps3, and to the most recent gears title, i would be saying the same thing about Xbox giving kickbacks for an exclusive xbox title.  Do you really think it blew out Xbox sales when that most recent title came around? doubtful.

@96augment @jeremy- actually, darksouls was ps3 exclusive and if you bothered to read my massive wall of text (cant really blame you). It was released on PC as an after launch feature. I will now proceed to paste wikipedia since you are too lazy to check the facts before you tell me I'm wrong.

"Following the game's release, many gamers expressed their hope for a PC version. Namco Bandai administrator, Tony Shoupinou responded on their page that a PC version was possible, saying:[40]

There is always possibilities to have games adapted on PC and the good news is that Dark Souls is not a 100% typical Console game so the adaptation is possible. Now to make things happen, let's say the demand has to be properly done. Someone to make a successful petition?

On January 6, 2012, fans started a petition to bring Dark Souls to PC, with over 92,000 people signing it.[41] On January 13, Tony Shoupinou replied by saying:[42]

Damn you are amazing! I honestly wasn’t expecting such a massive support. My boss(es) even came to talk to me about this, after it exploded all around the world. If you wanted to have the attention of Namco Bandai Games, now you have it. The future is in your hands, and I hope you will keep supporting this. I make a personal objective to make sure every relevant person at Namco Bandai Games is in touch with this formidable effort.

The PC version of the game was confirmed on April 7, 2012 via the PC Action magazine.[43] Re-branded as Prepare to Die Edition, it came out in August 2012 and featured new content, including bosses, enemies, equipment, and NPCs.[44] The new content, titled Artorias of the Abyss, was released for consoles in October 2012 in the form of DLC.[45] Soon after, it was announced that Dark Souls for PC would use Games for Windows – Live for online play and DRM, spurring fan backlash.[46] However, the final release uses Steamworks as its DRM along with GFWL for online play for all versions of the game[47][48]"

@jeremy-  Dark Souls is not exclusive to the PS3. It came to the Xbox and PC (although the PC version was apparently pretty bad). Only people who got to sites like Gamespot know about the end of the PS3's and Xbox's lifecycle. It's not like everyone knows. So, there are still people who might buy a PS3 or Xbox.

Even when the new consoles come out, people would still buy the PS3 and Xbox because it's cheaper than buying a next-gen console. Look at the Wii vs. Wii-U. More people bought a Wii than a Wii U in November.

jeremy-
jeremy-

@Total_mischief @jeremy-

You still fail to see the point... you are more interested in 'opinions' and being 'right' than exploring any aspect remotely involving intelligence.

Lets see if i can be more clear... so again, rather than ad hominem, we look at FACTS.

Take darksouls for instance, developed what we can reasonably characterize as 'near' the end of 'PS3 lifecycle'. And under 'exclusivity'.

Now, we see the emergence of a phenomena to the games industry, not really seen before, where there is a facebook group with 100k or more votes for a PC port.

Why? Why did these people not just all run and buy a PS3. Because (drum roll, as i've been saying in every post).... ITS NEAR THE END OF THE LIFECYCLE.

Gamers know how many potential games are left on the console, if they havnt got one now, and there havnt been THAT many exclusive games over the years, exclusivity (drum roll again)... IS NOT GOING TO WORK AT THIS PRESENT TIME.

Now, this is the part where these things called 'facts' really mess with your argument. because now Sony and the Dev agree with me too. They take the action of PORTING the game to PC (although poorly, and affecting gross sales).

Your statement of 'duh people dont buy windows because its not on ps3' is entirely a 'moot' point and irrelevant.

It was about EXCLUSIVITY, and whether you have to buy the PS3 to get the game experience. So lets look at it hey:

%s

Dozens of PC OR PS3 games, that you dont need to own the PS3 for to get the experience. Case and point :)

only its about whether the console has exclusivity. You never saw me demanding it be on Box, i would prefer last of us on the PC as i have a top spec box, (pretty sure i said that from the start anyway).

All i said, all i ever said, was that at this stage in the game, all the research, all the numbers show they should cross platform games UNTIL nextgen.

/end rant. Go ahead and try and prove me wrong but all i'm seeing are childlike 'told you so' or 'xbox sucks' responses.

Total_mischief
Total_mischief

@jeremy- Yes, because people are known to buy a new OS for gaming...you're just embarassing yourself.

jeremy-
jeremy-

@terrusaet Also, one more thing, its the same thing with the movie industry and piracy.

Content providers need to be more and more careful with how they deliver content, we are already seeing providers like HBO finally break the chains from cable to go online. Australia is very interesting in this regard because we have the highest theft rate for GOT tv series in the world, and its because we cant get the content we want, when we want it, at a good price. Kim Dotcom may be a grandstanding idiot sometimes, but he has a point about fast, cheap, good for online content.

What is increasingly happening is if young, tech savvy users cant get the content they want, they will immediately download it instead. As technology improves consumers have more and more choice, we can oneday walk into a store with google glass and our reality augmentation tells us which products to buy.

In reality, we dont buy because we have to, we buy games because want to support the companies that make them, and not steal from them.

Now, when nextgen hits, I'm not going to complain about exclusive titles.

All i'm saying is, if we are talking about Business Marketing, exclusive titles when there is little to no objective (in the last of us case)... other than bullshit hypothetical marketing on brand integrity is not the way to win end-users hearts.

Chew on that for a while.. In anycase, i doubt either of us will get past this because we agree the reasoning is marketing oriented, we just dont agree on whether it is justified or not, this has become a matter of opinion, not fact.

jeremy-
jeremy-

@traitor_651 @jeremy- Agreed, i picked one person to write a comment to 20 for, and you made a smiley face at the end so you were light hearted to begin with :)... my bad.

I'll call my tone 'argumentative', as in, not really negative, but just disputing/in conflict with most of what was being said.

Regarding calling you a fanboy, i was again addressing the wider (about half of the..) comments, I cant see any reason to call you a fanboy other than addressing 1 person rather than 30 replies, of which there was a large degree of console bandwagoning.

My original comment was ACTUALLY only meant to serve as a point that they should have made it for PC too, and that its annoying. Nobody is going to dispute there will probably be some consoles here and there bought for it, but they are really doing this just as a marketing train for the nextgen around the corner.

I found that annoying, made a small comment about it.

In the future... I must remember the first rule of fightclub, do not diss xbox or PS else you will taste the tears of 1000x fanboys. Cheers for not being generic1283129 game community douchebag.

jeremy-
jeremy-

@terrusaet @jeremy- Err, you are just repeating what i said in the first place.

I called it 'establishing brand integrity' for the next generation.

But what i explained, is this kind bullshit marketing strategy of depriving us for a game, for NO PROFIT, but just to build integrity for nextgen is annoying because i wanted to play the game on PC.

I understand that, and thats EXCACTLY the point i made. The fact that you just read a few lines then write a dissertation on exactly what i was saying is confusing.

You are just repeating what i was saying.

terrusaet
terrusaet

@jeremy- I seriously need to ask, are you stupid? Do you not understand basic sales, marketing, or even the definition of competition? Having exclusives at the end of a console generation is to help the sales of that console in the next generation. They did the same thing with the ps2 and that helped ps2 sales immensely throughout the next generation. If I'm not mistaken for I believe for 3 years the ps2 and ps3 sales were very close because of ps2 exclusives.

And how can you not give a shit when you said this in your first comment "Basically, playstation pays out the ass for exclusive rights so they can deprive everybody else of something and have slightly more 'brand integrity" ".. its got nothing to do with sales of the current console... all they want to do is   deprive everybody else."

That sir is called competition, not deprivation and every company/business does this so I don't see your point. Also you said yourself that you own an xbox, not a ps3, the fact that you chose an xbox over a ps3 means that Microsoft had an exclusive offer, service, game, or item that Sony did not have so the fact that you pull this idea out of your ass that Sony is "depriving" everyone else because of the same marketing strategy that made you choose an xbox over ps3 is just completely absurd and crazy. And I don't understand why you keep referencing how you"re going to pick your next console. I guaranteeing most people are doing the same thing in choosing their next gen console.

traitor_651
traitor_651

@jeremy- Ok Jeremy, if you count me as a so called PS 'Fanboy' and not capable of making a proper comment, then I am sorry to disappoint. The main reason why I didn't comment much more is because everything that I wanted to say was already said, and it was downright funny that you had so many replies.

Now, on the one hand I understand your point of view, it being so late in the generation cycle, but on the other hand look at it this way. As people before me said, PS3 has had a pretty Low Profile line of exclusives compared to the Xbox. Having an amazing game like this come out is a great chance to prolong the life of the console.

Not only that but there are still many people that hold out on buying a ps3 for various reasons, whether it's the price of the console or the lack of great games. a release like this helps the console look more attractive to people that have had xbox forever and want to try out something new.

and you can't say Xbox isn't doing the same thing, heck look at the release of Halo 4, it comes out under a year before the possible announcement of a new Xbox. I make no comment on DLC, that just is bound to attract haters XD.

Finally, lighten up a bit. you sound a bit pessimistic about this whole thing, it's just video games! And have a sense of humor as well, I didn't mean to laugh t you in the original comment but it was outright funny.

If this comment doesn't satisfy you, send me a PM and I'll send you a 5 page essay!
