The Last of Us PS4 Gives Naughty Dog a "Head Start" on Its Next PS4 Game

Naughty Dog developed The Last of Us Remastered in part to help its future PS4 development.

Providing Naughty Dog with a way to ease itself into the transition from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4 was part of the motivation for developing The Last of Us Remastered, according to community strategist Arne Meyer.

Remastered is an enhanced PS4 version of last year's acclaimed PS3 game. Meyer told CVG the prospect of bringing the game to PS4 was brought up soon after the PS3 version was completed, and it was viewed as one way to help the studio's future PS4 development.

"We're always building on top of what we've done previously, and The Last of Us Remastered is probably one of the more concrete examples in a way."

"We had been working on a PS4 engine and tools for a while at that point," he said. "There were a couple of reasons that we decided to do it and one was that we thought back to when we had to build an engine from scratch when moving between PS2 and PS3--that was a really painful time for the studio and we wanted to avoid that with PS4. Nothing helps a transition between consoles more than making a full game, because you learn so much about what you need for tools."

Naughty Dog works with "such an iterative process" that every game it makes benefits the next in some way, according to Meyer. "We're always building on top of what we've done previously, and The Last of Us Remastered is probably one of the more concrete examples in a way," he said. "We're making this in a way that benefits our PS4 tools pipeline so that we can have a good head start on our next, full PS4 game."

Naughty Dog said earlier this year it has at least two "brand-new experiences" in development, one of which is likely Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. The studio's lead programmer, Jason Gregory, shared a similar sentiment with GameSpot recently, telling us developing Remastered was "like taking a crash course in PS4."

Meyer also cited something Sony has said--that a large number of PS4 owners never got to play The Last of Us on PS3--as another reason that pushed the studio to make Remastered, which was developed over the course of about six months.

Remastered arrives on PS4 today for $50, and according to the first reviews--read ours in full here--it's well worth a look, particularly if you haven't played it before. Sony isn't offering a discount to owners of the PS3 version, but trade in a PS3 copy at GameStop and you'll be able to get Remastered for only $25.

It is a slow-paced third-person action and advanture game. It gets better graphic and visual details about everything on the screen. Keep it up and roll the good parts into the next production.

Uncharted 4 is going to be visually amazing.  When footage starts leaking out, the PC master face might need to wipe the sweat off their face.

I love this game.  I bought TLOU on PS3 when it came out, got 1/4 into it and needed some cash so had to sell it.  Im glad it came to ps4 cuz not only does it look and play great, its an awesome game!!

60 frames makes the combat in this game more visceral than it already was. I'm having a blast with Photo Mode too. Wish more games included that.

You guys, I cant wait.  My DL is at 67%.  Ive heard this game defines a console generation, let alone one of the best ever.  I feel so proud to be able to say that I cant wait to try out this fantastic piece of art.  Never played it the first go around as I had an XBOX360.  Im so glad Im not a fanboy and bought another Microsoft product.  So happy being apart of the PS4 family.

Just make sure you do not preorder any games from Walmart.  I ordered due to guarantee delivery date of release and now found out it wont be delivered until August 6th.  Can't wait to try the game though.

The remastered version is fantastic.  The game is worth playing again and again.

Gagging my cynical self and fully unleashing my fanboy side I can't even imagine what what kind advantages having a head-start will mean in practical terms.

Not a bad idea at all when transitioning to a new console.

I think the game is alright gameplay wise but far as graphics I'm not impressed I never got it for ps3 so I had my hopes up for ps4 with all the good things being said about it in my opinion which I'm entitled to I wasted 50 bucks like I said the gameplay is alright but after playing it last night I should've picked it up on my ps3

chris120379

the 2 games im playing at themoment, one that i played last year, (TLOU) and the other i played nearly 20 years ago (Oddworld). Both r great don´t get me wrong.

so 2014 is the year of remasters, remakes, betas and no real contenders for goty, at least this one is worth replaying. Next on the table is supermario 64 remastered. lol.

So they did it 'cause they wanted to avoid building a new game engine? Worst possible reason...

Absolutely a great game, but still would have been better if they waited and released it on the PS4 originally. It would have really helped with this horrible drought!

I'm playing it now and it's a huge improvement on the PS3 version. Well worth the money. High res detail and it runs smooth as silk, maintaining all the character and gameplay from the original. The only thing that stops it from being total perfection is that the detail objects are still PS3 objects with hexagonal curves, but you have to go looking for them in detail. Playing normally it's no problem and does not detract from your enjoyment of the high quality on offer.

One of the greatest games ever made, looking and playing superb. This is a game you will keep coming back to and replaying for many years into the future like re-watching a classic movie.

they should give us an option to play at 30fps or 60fps again

$50 dollars for an HD Remaster is too expensive. 39.99 is more appropriate..

@PlatinumPaladin There are huge practical benefits.  Different system means different programming code, different hardware and software, different possibilities (and impossibilities) with graphics, processing speed, etc.  The next time they make a game, they won't waste time learning about these matters, and can just jump into making a game.  I think that is good "a head-start . . . in practical terms."

@eternaldragoonx I couldn't agree more.  They're like the High-profile celebrity of the industry right now, everyone is watching their every move.

@Razor10000 Bioshock, God of War, Uncharted.... I'd like those as I have never played them before... they would look stunning in my ps4 :)

I have it on both. Not sure if your TV is just crappy or what but it's a huge improvement over ps3 and one of the best looking games even compared to the new generation games

Destiny will be out in September. Most likely game of the year, although Dark Souls 2 is there also

@Jawehawk-DK They used the experience to improve the new engine for PS4 that they're already working on, not to avoid dealing with a new build altogether.

@justerthought totally agree with u bud, only complaint i have is having to pay ps plus to dwelve myself into the MP.

Urizen316
Urizen316

@justerthought Most people play it once and never touch it again, true story. Then again, most people don't buy it, they just borrow it from their friends, hence this re-release. "Best game ever made" wasn't worth purchasing.

@Redsyrup I'll probably get it for $15-20 when I pick up the PS4 during the 2015 holiday season.

sampson3121

@Redsyrup didn't they just say that gamestop will only charge 25$ if you bring in the ps3 version? and if you never played the game before then 50$ is a good price for a game that won game of the year wouldn't.. you say?

hystavito

@Redsyrup Well if you're a Canadian, Target has $15 off all PS4 games until I think Thursday, which makes TLoU $39.99.

@jcv1811 @Razor10000 I was lucky enough to be able to enjoy the bioshock series (highly recommend) but not uncharted.  I was also hoping for remastered versions so i can play it before Uncharted 4 comes out....but if not hopefully PS Now will give us that option.

Got the 55 Samsung smart t.v. which I got 3 months ago so it's not the t.v. I just expected more I guess

My boss borrowed it from her brother, beat it, put it in her top 5 games ever played, and just bought the remastered this time around. So yes this game is worth buying and alot of the people who said they borrowed it or played it at a friends house have never played the game. Every one of my real life friends have bought and loved this game.

LJNkickstarter

@sampson3121 Never bought it last year, I got too much lag on my other purchases... Now im getting it for PS4 and 50$ seems fine for me since it comes with the expansion.

Excellent choice. I have a 46" 8000 series Samsung in my bedroom. 65" 9000 in the living room and a 61" HL61A750 Led DLP in the basement. Awesome tvs. Have never seen an actual 4K movie or anything on my 65" though. Kinda sad.

mjonk2pc

It really changes the way the game looks. In 60 fps the in game characters stand out from the environment way more, almost like soap opera effect, which I think looks cool. Some people want a movie look where everything looks blended in, which is how it looks in 30 fps
