The Last of Us Film Will Have Parts "Quite Different" To The Game

Writer Neil Druckmann says the film adaptation of The Last of Us will still retain core relationship between Ellie and Joel.

The storyline for Naughty Dog's critically acclaimed game The Last of Us is getting an overhaul for its big screen treatment.

Speaking in an interview with MCV UK, the film's writer Neil Druckmann, who was also writer and creative director on The Last of Us, explained that "some parts [of the film] will be similar to the game and some parts will be quite different."

"In two hours you can't tell the same kind of story that you can in a game like The Last of Us, which is 15 hours. I'm in the middle of it now, and it's been super difficult because there's so much that happens in The Last of Us – even just in the cinematics – that can't fit in a film, let alone all the gameplay in-between and dialogue," he said.

However, Druckmann stated that the film will still retain the core relationship between Ellie and Joel, despite possibly facing other significant changes. "The first part of it was like: well, what is this story really about? It's clearly about Joel and Ellie. What are the most important beats that we can't lose? Start with those, and cut everything else out," he said.

At last month's Comic-Con, Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams was cited as a possible candidate to play the female lead in the film, although no castings have been confirmed. Spider-Man and The Evil Dead director Sam Raimi is signed on to produce the film.

Will Ellen Page ever have a chance to be a part in this?

I just finished the PS4 version of this game, it is outstanding.

However, I don't anticipate much in the film with the same storyline. The reason is simple: the movei may destory the game in my heart. There are tons of lessons that gamers should have learnt already from all those available from-game movies. Frankly speaking, none of them is as great as the original game. It might just be good to cut the gameplay and CGI together and make a great playable game video, rather than having a bunch of real people act on big screen and pretend they are telling the story with the equal quality from the game.

When the movie comes out, do not pay high expectation to it as you are like me - a gamer who has already played the game. The movie might be good for someone who hasn't experienced the game at all, but are interested to see why The Last Of Us is so popular.

I will be watching this day one.

Hopefully they do make it a fair bit different to the game.

I hate video game based movies that are so similar to the actual game, all it does is take away from the experience of the game. Providing Ellie and Joel still have the same personalities, making the movie different (but still incredibly awesome) I will buy this movie. If it's anywhere near as magnificent as the game, I will buy twelve copies.

Okay, I won't.. But I will watch it twelve times.

The Last of Us Film Will Have Parts "Quite Different" To The Game...how about "Quite Different FROM the Game...FROM The Game.

I hate to be a grammar Nazi, but friggin' proofread the title at least hehe.

Also, don't let Uwe Bol direct this...

No more infected movies, please. Any old school zombie/infected film from the 60's, 70's and 80's>last of us and all modern zombie/infected films.

What made TLOU stand out was that it was a video game with movie quality features. Features such as memorable characters and scenes. art direction and writing etc. I really doubt that it will take off the way the game did.

Will it retain the 13 year old lesbian stuff? Nothin' wrong with 13 year old lesbian love, right? Hell, might as well make it 10 year old lesbians...what's three years? I'm so glad that we've come far enough as a society to not draw moral lines.

There is absolutely no need to turn this masterpiece into a horrible movie. We all know game movies always fail hard.

This will either be immense, or absolutely dreadful and we'll all have to pretend it never happened.

Also, I thought The Road was pretty much the film version of this game.

This doesn't necessarily mean a bad thing at all, you have to remember The Last of Us is a videogame and just like any videogame, a lot of the scenes are filled with gameplay. That gameplay doesn't always translate well to other mediums like film.

And why can't Troy and Ashley play their same roles in the film?  I'd watch that.  It was just fine watching them on stage in the Last of Us Live.

they will change the ending, I guarantee it.

Should have went down the miniseries route instead of big box office route. It might not make as much money as a movie would but a miniseries would have given more room for the story to be fleshed out rather than condensed to fit he 2 hour frame of the box office.

Well hopefully they're keeping the theme and the core of what made the game great but yes doing things a little different for the film.  Nothing drastic but if it was just a one to one retelling only in non-interactive format then it would just sap all the point out of making it into a movie.  When something is adapted to film it should change to suit the medium and be "appropriately" different so as to keep the viewer interested even if they've already consumed the story in another format.  Now that said... don't f*** it up Naughty Dog.

In other words, it won't have any casual swearing from Ellie. It's likely got to be PG13, so creepy deaths and violence gets a double thumbs up, but say F*** more than once and it's bye bye kiddie rating...

"Got to MAXIMIZE our potential audience, screw story credibility." lol

I am speculating but... If it is made in to a PG13, then it will have a hard time convincing me to go and see it. Who wants a toned down level of creepiness and language than that of the game?

"Gosh, darn it Joel! You are one bad bottomed *Monday to Friday, Guy!"

It could be great though, from what I've heard about the game it sounds a really good, solid story, perfect for a movie adaptation.

However... If it has ANY of that annoying trend, lazy Hollywood Horror films tend to contain these days, better known to most as JUMP SCARES! "Then screw you guys... I'ma going home!"

I wonder how many people there are in the comments saying this games already a movie when they've never played it in the first place.

There's not many game movies that are good, or if there even is any out there that is good lol. You can't squeeze several hours of game content into a movie which is commonly 2 hours now. If one wants to make a game movie then you have to make several of them.

A game that is a movie ripoff is now being made into a movie. Same with Uncharted. I don't get it.

@bunchanumbers the game sucked. I played it 2 times and I still dont understand why people praise it so much.

Your morality, and someone else's sexual orientation don't need to coincide. Most of the g@y people I know, knew they were attracted to the same sex at a much younger age than ten. Perhaps you should keep your morality to yourself, and let others live their lives in peace.

I didn't mind the silent hill movies, but for the most part you're right. You never know though, if TLOU is done well, it could be great.

@Gamer_4_Fun The Last of Us isn't quite so depressing, lol.  They have real civilizations at least, and even a shot at forging a better future, whereas in The Road...well, that was just horrifying.

Weaponn_X

@jshipley01eb They got Arya Stark to play her in the movie which is awsome and she looks like the intended age.

@Halloll You're not gonna like the way it ends, I guarantee it.

@EcksTheory And it will just get cancelled because of ratings and replaced by some reality tv show just like what happens with most good shows like Revolution.

canuckbiker

That would be ideal, but the cost to produce a series with this setting would be fairly high.

I don't get it either. It plays like metal gear in that it's story driven with multiple ways to get through a chapter. Just because it's not open world doesn't mean it's a movie.

Source: I passed it this weekend.

@raptor1998

NO no no no no! lol.

Resident Evil movies have done that, and each one gets worse than the last.

I know what you are saying though but the movies have no decisions to make, exploring to do, strategy to consider, they just follow the script.

Although there will be more than likely loads of stuff missing from the game in the finished movie... I'd say most, if not all of the actual plot will fit in to the 2 hours.

Interested to hear how this is a movie ripoff.

That movie with,Vigo in it? Was that boy in the same situation as ellie?

@Dredcrumb9 @bunchanumbers You know what they say.

Opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one and they all stink.

It just happens that yours stinks more than the average. in fact going by the metacritic user review average, you have an opinion that stinks more than 95% of every other person who has "profesionally" reviewed this game.

Average critic rating is 95% on metacritic.

@canuckbiker lets be honest about the lesbian ellie story line it was awful, it came out of nowhere and it fell like a publicity stunt. It was such a stupid idea.

@canuckbiker  Well, it seems that gay people have been gay their entire lives. So they would be attracted to the same sex since they were able to realize it. No age limit on that. But I totally agree with everything else you said.

txoutlawtx
txoutlawtx

@canuckbiker I couldn't care less about gay characters but love scenes with 13 year olds? I'm pretty sure that the majority of people would say, "Yeah, that's a little sketchy." If there's no problem with that, is there a problem with her and Joel havin a little kissy kissy time? Why not 2 10 year olds or hell, why not 8 year olds? It's only a 5 year difference. For you too attack me like I'm some kind of person trying to keep gay people down is ridiculous.

@Rotondi @Halloll I don't think anyone will. If the movie is as good as I hope it is, I hope it just goes on and on forever. No ending, no disappointment.

@Weaponn_X @EcksTheory

Revolution was considered a good show?

It had an interesting concept but I didn't care for it. It felt too draggy to me, it would open with a strong first 5 mins, then nothing but filler for the whole episode, until the last 5 mins, which would always end on a "Oh I must see what happens next," moment.

I would still watch that over any of that awful "Reality TV" rubbish though. lol

I find a linear game is good for story driven. Open world TLOU just couldn't work. I also found the gameplay challenging, and fun to do multiple run throughs, to see how different I could take on certain sections.

It's actually not as bad as I thought, but it still awhile to go before the article goes stale.

@Rotondi @olddadgamer @Gamer_4_Fun At 287 pages it isn't particularly long either.

In fact I would say "short story" is fairly accurate given the severe lack of substance in the movie and book.
