The Last of Us Being Performed as a One-Time-Only Stage Show

The Last of Us: One Night Live will feature many of the principal actors and live music from the game's composer.

The Last of Us has received a great deal of acclaim since its release last year, in particular thanks to its standout story. Just ahead of the game's re-release on PlayStation 4 as The Last of Us Remastered, a special, one-time-only stage performance of scenes from the game will take place next week featuring the voice cast from the game.

Known as The Last of Us: One Night Live, the performance will feature "select scenes" performed by five of the principal actors: Troy Baker (Joel), Ashley Johnson (Ellie), Merle Dandridge (Marlene), Hana Hayes (Sarah), and Annie Wersching (Tess). The Last of Us co-director Neil Druckmann will serve as director for the show, and composer Gustavo Santaolalla will perform live music from his score. A Q&A with the creative team will also take place.

The show is being held at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, CA next Monday, July 28, at 7PM Pacific. Free tickets are being distributed through the PlayStation website; you can join the wait list right now to have the chance to be seated on a first-come, first-served basis.

As the venue can't possibly seat everyone interested in attending--not to mention those who simply can't make it to Los Angeles--Sony will stream the event online through Twitch, YouTube, and the Live Event Viewer on the PlayStation Network.

The Last of Us Remastered arrives on PS4 on July 29 for $50. It sports visual improvements, all of the DLC released for the game, and some small additions that make use of the DualShock 4, but is otherwise the same game released on PlayStation 3 last year. For more on Remastered, check out our recent interview with Naughty Dog.

Will you be tuning in for this special performance, or do you plan on trying to make it to the event in-person? Let us know in the comments.

Too bad they didn't get the real Ellie they tried to mimic - Elenn Page.

Will it have horrible and repetitive gameplay like the video game?

An Opera! How would this work with the real actors? That Ellie didn't look little in her pic bitching about ubisoft.

How would I watch it streaming from YouTube? I'm on vacation in Europe, so might not be able to watch it live. :(

A stage show? hmmm. now were going 'masterpiece theatre' with this franchise eh?

Someone tell Druckmann not to forget his "tweed jacket" and pipe.

Oh Naughty Dog...he he he.

I'm calling it here: Ashley Johnson will murder someone in the audience during the performance after one too many people call her Ellen Page.

I hope they break into song and dance at one point, would be amusing if they did.

Oh thank goodness as this sort of thing has so few strong female leads *rolls eyes*.

Also... Oh no the actors stole Ellen Pages likeness.

i love how people are going to actually buy last of us remastered. sonys remastering a game that just released last year, so they can milk it for more money. anyone who says last of us has a good story has clearly never played persona 4 golden or persona 3 FES. the last of us imo had a very average story. it was basically "theres zombies. she dies. he dies. the end"

I don't know if someone made this joke already but I'm gonna say it anyway.

So, next year they're going to release another version of the stage show with greater production values :P

Hey. Sony. I don't mind this sort of stuff happening, but if I may give a little bit of a tip...
Don't do an Atlus and end up with another Persona 4.

When the remastered edition comes out GS is going to either give it an 8 or a 9.

If they give it an 8 it would mean that there are NO improvements over the original version, which is false. Or maybe they would say that graphical improvements do not warrant an extra point.

If GS give it a 9 they would use the opportunity to make amends for letting McShia give the original version an 8.

Let's see how it plays out.

@hermitkiller Do you even know what you're asking? I doubt you do. I don't just mean something stupid like "I'm asking for an emulator. Of course I know what that is!" BTW it's not funny. If you are serious you're not very good at trolling or whatever this is. I hate to break it to you but there will never be an emulator for Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox ONE, PS3, or PS4. If you in fact do know what you are asking then you already know why it won't happen. That's how I know that you have no clue what you are asking.

@Sevenizz Huh! Ashley Johnson is the real Ellie, they even look similar.

@platinumking320  ""tweed jacket" and pipe".  It does appear that he is developing a bit of an ego doesn't it.

And something tells me that he wishes he was Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino does a live cast reading of his leaked The Hateful Eight script. So Neil Druckmann follows that with a live reading of The Last of Us.

Hurvl

@rawkstar007 But Ashley Johnson herself looks nothing like Ellen Page. I'd say she's more of a younger Kate Winslet.

@Fartman7998 It doesn't bother me. The Last of Us is a great game. I mean, I wouldn't go to the thing, but I think I'll enjoy watching it. If other great games had it, then that'd be cool too.

NTM23

@PeterDuck I don't care about their scoring system, but yes, it will be either an eight or nine, whatever it is, your point doesn't matter either. It is what it is, and the game regardless is fantastic (at least to me).

nl_skipper
nl_skipper

@PeterDuck I never really expected the game to get a re-review.  If so I'm sure it'll just get the same score again, or maybe a random 9.  An 8 seems like a fair score to me though, I don't think anyone needs to "make amends" as you put it.  You do get some nice content in the DLC though (both for SP and MP), so that may warrant a higher score since it's all going to be bundled.

normanislost
normanislost

@PeterDuck  except an 8 is perfectly accurate and great score

and better graphics don't change the game at all so it's still an 8

PeterDuck
PeterDuck

@NTM23 @PeterDuck

my point doesn't matter in the cosmic sense? Well, of course it doesn't.

Try to stay more relevant.

RevLux

@normanislost  From every article I've read by those who have tried the remastered version so far it is a better game than the original. The 60fps plays a part in that I believe. It also contains the Left behind dlc and uses the extra features available on the dual shock 4. Obviously graphics aren't the most important thing in video games. Although the changes are more significant than simply boosting the resolution and texture count.

Not that any of that ultimately matters with game review scores since they represent nothing more, or less, than the opinion of the reviewer. Some people place a higher importance on graphics. While other's feel the gameplay is the key to a great game. Still others may argue that the story is the most important thing in adventure games, etc. It's all objective.

john1217727
john1217727

@normanislost The Last Of Us on PS3 has a score of 98 on Metacritic based on 95 critics.  The Gamespot reviewer's opinion of the game is obviously in the minority.  Doesn't mean that it's not valid but perhaps they should give us another reviewer's opinion this time.  That said, I'd also like to see the previous reviewer's take on the remaster as well.

fig56
fig56

Very true. A graphical upgrade should not merit a higher review score. If the game plays the same and there were no enhancements like better controls or added content the score should stay the same.

NTM23
NTM23

@PeterDuck

Whether they give it this or that shouldn't mean anything to anyone since it's just opinion, which is relevant, and obviously what you're talking about, otherwise you wouldn't have mentioned it. Your point shouldn't be relevant in the first place, and not worth saying. Try to understand my comment next time. You could have stopped at, "When the remastered edition comes out GS is going to either give it an 8 or a 9." That's probably true.

brandonmshanks
brandonmshanks

@fig56 I think you have to take into account how good a game looks when you're rating it. Not that it should factor in heavily, but it should still factor in. Obviously gameplay and mechanics are vastly more important than how a game looks, but, for me anyway, it still matters. People worked hard to make a game look great, or maybe make it look horrible, and in some part the rating should reflect that work.
