The Last of Us and GTA 5 lead in BAFTA 2014 nominations

Naughty Dog's critically acclaimed The Last of Us racks up 10 nominations for the 2014 British Academy Game Awards, followed closely by Grand Theft Auto V with nine.

BAFTA has unveiled its huge list of nominees for the 2014 British Academy Game Awards, with The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto V hoarding most of the nominations between them.

The Last of Us received the most nominations, with 10, across categories including Artistic Achievement, Best Game, Game Design, and Story. Hot on its heels is GTA 5 with nominations in nine categories, including Best Game, Multiplayer, and Story.

Media Molecule's Vita platformer Tearaway scored eight nominations, and indie hit Papers, Please! saw four nods. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Bioshock Infinite, Super Mario 3D World, and The Stanley Parable are all also members of the four nominations club.

The awards ceremony will take place on March 12 at the Tobacco Dock in London, and will once again be fronted by glamorous celebrity and The Apprentice: You're Fired! host Dara O Briain.

For the record, my money is definitely on The Last of Us.

I'm surprised that GS  hasn't even pointed out that their GOTY winner wasn't even nominated for the Best handheld game category. I guess not everyone was in love with it as they were.

Not sure what's the big deal about The Last Of Us. It's an excellent game, but not THAT amazing. I agree with GameSpot's 8, at least one site got it correctly...

I was amazed by GTA V for example, and not sure how TLOU can even be compared to such a game in almost any aspect, except the story writing.

What is AC4 doing there, it doesn't deserve any of the nominations

Last of Us was one of the best storytelling, great stealth system to fit the need to survive, and great characters that I can relate. Naughty Dog made this game so well it puts Uncharted to shame. (I'm still looking forward to Uncharted 4) ND please do TLOU PS4 version.

No COD Doggies in the best multiplayer category. Very nice to see!

And Last Of Us will probably win everything because "hurr, story is so good" (by video game standards at least, which means that if it was a movie the story would be mediocre as hell). Video game awards are a joke and the people who pick them are even... jokier.

I hope Tomb Raider could win "The Game Design". But it seem like The Last Of Us will win almost every awards.

If nothing else, The Last of Us should def win for music.

I hope Jonathan Ross doesn't brown nose anybody this year because his constant brown nosing of Gabe Newell at last years event was cringe worthy to say the very least.

I hope Super Mario 3D World picks up all the accolades in the categories it has been nominated for, an excellent game by all accounts and worthy of success.

As for The Last of Us, it's the most overhyped game of 2013 along with GTA V, so I would expect both of those games to pick up awards, though I hope Bioshock Infinite wins the artistic achievement award.

@SirSlimyScrotum I don't know if it was horrible, but it was definitely disappointing.

@erani_1111  Well the voice of one site can't drown out the collective voice of others. the majority of the gaming community loved TLOU and that love is showing my the plethora of awards and accolades it's won. Just be glad that at least one site shared your views on the game.

@001011000101101  Your butthurt won't change the fact that the industry and most of the community adored the game. Not everybody shares your taste in videogames. You just have to deal with that reality.

Not true. The Last of Us is just a good story, not just for games. The main, Ellie and Joel story can be seen as somewhat unoriginal, although still very well presented, but since it is a game, there's also another side of it, which is the story of humanity in general and the state they're in after a disaster. If you immerse yourself into the world, you can imagine that's perhaps how the real world would be if we had went through it. To me, it's a look at humanity when things go wrong. If Roger Ebert was still alive, and The Last of Us was a movie, I bet he'd give it a 3.5 out of 4. Just saying.

@namitokiwa   :D:D:D Tomb Raider was one of the worst games I played recently and by no means should it win a design award. Little to no sense of exploration, lack of control (cant run half of the time, automatic torch which you can't put down...etc.) and stupid QTEs.

prats93

Dont think do. It should probably win an award for best Uncharted imitation.

@tom_cat_01  The Last of Us certainly had great music, but, compared to some of the other titles that had great music, it was pretty sparse, and used wisely when needed. The Last of Us is my favorite game of 2013, and while the soundtrack would be on my top ten list, perhaps top five, it wasn't my favorite, and the fact it was infrequent compared to other titles made it so it couldn't be my favorite.

tom2750

@19James89  you not liking games and everyone else liking games means you're the problem not the games its not the games fault that you have bad taste in games you  probably didn't even beat or own the last of us

NTM23

@Slim_Lyrics It's just opinions, no one is necessarily incorrect. I think the game deserves the praise, and I however don't think people should really deny that, but I also don't think people should love it just because of that. If it doesn't interest them, then that's understandable, it's just not their type of game.

001011000101101
001011000101101

@NTM23  Many movies have done the whole humanity gone wrong thing without crappy video game combat inbetween story segments. Sorry, I know it's a good game, but from a story standpoint it's really not THAT amazing.

namitokiwa
namitokiwa

@theprismhead @namitokiwa  it depends on how people feel about Tomb Raider reboot. Torch can not put down when you are first come into the Secret Tombs, and you can put down the torch everytime you like in the whole game. The Location are awnsome, exploration is okay and about the control, I have heard a lot of people like it, maybe you are one of a few feel uncomfortable. But I respect your opinions. Myself, personal, like this Tomb Raider. :D

p/s: QTE is okay, I don't feel force about it.

DiamondDM13

@prats93 Don't be like that. Tomb Raider is excellent. I like the Uncharted games a bit better, but still... Also, let's not forget Indiana Jones...

@tom2750 Everyone else? Of the 80million+ people who have purchased a PS3, only 4.26million people have bought the game to date. So what was that about me being in the minority? Now The Last of Us is a good game, I bought it and played through it twice, but does that mean it's a masterpiece? No.

The best game I played last year by a country mile was The Wonderful 101, a sublime game by all accounts and I'm bitterly disappointed that it's not nominated for at least best debut category, but I shall digress.

I owned a PS3 for well over four years and the top two games I played on that platform was Bioshock and Dishonored. The Last of Us doesn't even make it into my top five games.

EasyComeEasyGo

@tom2750 @19James89 He said that he play TLOU but never like it and as for me I beat TLOU 4 times and I also do my Survivor mode. Great game by Naughty Dog.

@001011000101101

It doesn't matter if it's been done before, it matters in how well it's done and how it made an individual feel. I disagree with you, and I personally felt more connected to the events that occurred in The Last of Us than any film like it before. I think the one most refer to, and the one I feel like you're referring to is the stuff that's simply seen in the cutscenes, which I can agree isn't 'amazing' in one sense. It just seems like some people went in it with an indifferent attitude towards it all, intending to keep that attitude all the way through.

@monkeypukefight Hopefully, but also, where is that game mentioned here? No matter what, it's an awkward thing to say.
