Sega today announced The King of Route 66, a driving game in development at Sega's AM2 studio. The King of Route 66 is naturally set on the Interstate 66 highway that runs through the US heartland, and players have to drive a nitro-powered 18-wheeler from Illinois to California. On their quest to become the king of the road and win the attentions of the "Queens of Route 66," players will face the goons of the evil Tornado Corporation. The game features massive mission-based levels, fully customizable vehicles, and dozens of minigames.

"I've never taken a caffeine-fueled, demolition-derby-style road trip across the US in an 18-wheeler to win the hearts of eight beautiful women, but if I had, I bet it would be just like The King of Route 66," said Mike Fischer, vice president at Sega of America.

The King of Route 66 is scheduled to ship next March. The game is said to be exclusively for the PlayStation 2.
