The HotSpot - Skyrim - 12/9/11

The HotSpot goes LIVE for an in-depth discussion on the quirks and foibles of the excellent Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Bethesda Softworks' latest Elder Scrolls title is clearly one of the best games to come out this year, even if it's burdened by ludicrous glitches, idiotic AI, and less-than-compelling storytelling. What's going on here?! Join Kevin VanOrd, Kurtis Seid, John Davison, and Tom Magrino for a replay of our first-ever LIVE episode of The HotSpot.

@ZOD777: The fact that the PS3 version launched in the way it did says that they are at least one of those -- there's no way that save issue was not encountered if they did their due diligence testing. I do not think it is "too soon" to expect a product you purchased to be working well, now over a month after release. Hitting their novelty release date was more important than squashing bugs.

Bethesda is doing everything they can to fix all the issues. They are not lazy and irresponsible like some other studios are with patching. Fallout NV had 7 patches I think? It is too soon to be worried about all of the issues right now. Believe me when I say that they are dedicated to ensuring that they deliver a great product. Be patient.

i do agree about the dragon fights I hate them, and they feel like a choir. If your a melee player even if not I just hate them. everything else is cool though.

Jeez...more like "B#tchcast". I am a fan of the podcast and a really big fan of the game...but I can't believe how much of this show was "Here's what sucked about this game...Here's what bugged me about this feature." Even the compliments are backhanded "What I really liked was feature X...sure wasn't as crappy as how it was in Oblivion." This game is probably the most wide-open and content-rich RPG's (if not, THE most) that has ever been released on any system...it seems like the spoilercast should probably concentrate a bit more on specific plotpoints or cool features that players might not stumble on (like most unusual quest, or most powerful item, etc.) as opposed to what this particular podcast came across as; which could be summarized as: "Skyrim is an amazing game! Let me tell you about this buggy letdown with poor AI and a weak ending; hope you will like it as much as we did!"

I agree with Magrino 100% over the part where you're just rifling through every object in the room because you're a compulsive gamer. It happened to me in Fallout 3 and New Vegas as well, made me feel like I wasted so many hours for something ultimately pointless, which kills me. So I'm very hesitant on picking Skyrim up because it just reminds me too much of the new-gen Fallout, I'm afraid of feeling like I wasted a 100 hours instead of enjoying the game.

I'm only a level 5 right now since i've been spending a bunch of time playing Battlefield...at what level do you think I can allow myself to listen to this spoilercast without spoiling the story for myself?

@cstv @NDegree funny cause i'm playing the PS3 version for about 185hours with no glitches, just one npc that started to clone himself and now i have ten copies of the same guy walking around:P

The game is amazing. I guess I am one of the lucky ones that has not faced any problems. Except, the game froze twice with 30hours in. Anyway, Uncharted 3 froze 3 times within 8hours of play.

@kevin-v you got me wrong, its not just this game or story, for multi platform games in general i observed that you prefer the 360 and as ive seen in a lot of comments its not just my opinion... but that doesnt really matter, in my opinion games like these are always superior on pc... its not just graphics or (in this case) earlier patches, its the modding community which makes this already huge game even bigger... i mean skyrim is out for a month and it already has hundreds of mods! and the construction set isnt even out yet!

well done gamespot, doing a better job than pete hines in marketing this BROKEN game...and before you all 'shout' at me, the PS3 version is bloody broken....i am sure bethesda has paid you a fortune to churn out all sorts of useless articles, start selects and hotspots for this game

Wow I like this set-up, the radio room was cool but this ain't bad either. You are really making some crazy changes to the HotSpot Mr.Magrino, not bad at all!

@Archias, I've played Skyrim for close to 80 hours now, and yes I have encountered more bugs then in most games. But with 80 hours on the time this is still less bugs per hour then in most games. Granted I havent come across any gamebreaking bugs so I am yet to get annoyed with this game, but I think such a complex game is allowed to have more bugs. Not just in total but also per hour if need be. There are just so many things happening that could conflict with one another that it is impossible to playtest for all those bugs. Most games are linear, short and set in levels. Each level can be played again and again to make sure that >10 hour singleplayer segment is near-perfect. You cant expect Skyrim with all its quests, NPCs and other variables that can interact with one another at any time, to be just as polished. Does that make me an apologist? If you say so, in my opinion that just makes me a realist. It also allows me to enjoy this game a lot more it seems when I view it from a rational perspective.

Archias

Lots of apologists in here. Yes, it's a good game. Yes, it is a blast to play. But also, yes, no matter how much you want to deny it, it is probably the buggiest big budget title to be released since the last Bethesda game. And for that, it deserves demerits.

quit whining skyrim has glitches and i have a ps3 i understand the arguments but damn 80% of the glitches are funny and i still have a blast i save every so often in case it freezes but it rarely does anymore due to the patches this game deserves game of the year and studio of the year no body else can make this great of a game of course it has bugs it has soo much going on.

And I thought G4TV was bad. Do these guys really play games? I found most of their complaints were without merit. Complaints about story were because they wanted to be led around perhaps? Seriously, Skyrim is an open ended game. It is up to the player to keep track of what he is doing.

brpw4lif3
brpw4lif3

Seriously I second Jeffersox. If the bugs are that detrimental to your game then your either very unlucky or have some type of psychosis. Worst case scenario you reload from a previous save or just wait for a patch that will inevitably be released. I mean what games these days don't receive patches shortly after their release.... none, no developer predicts every possible scenario a player could find themselves in. With a world as huge and diverse as Skyrim it makes even more sense as to why there may be more glitches/bugs than in other games which aren't as large and intricate. Most glitches/bugs have their solutions. I know on PC bethesda already released a patch that fixed the dragons flying backwards.

Stop hating the game for a few hiccups. And love it for everything it does right!! LOL that sounded cheap but still if you dont focus on the things on the little things and coap with it and GET OVER IT its a fantastic game..

Skyrim is not the Game of the Year, it's Batman: Arkham City. Also Studio of the Year is Valve, not Bethesda Game. At least they don't release every game with allot of bugs, glitches, slow down & frame rate issues. Infect Also with the Skyrim patch 1.3, some problems are still there. What is the reason for buying hundred & hundred hours of game, when it doesn't run good on your console??

Bugs in this game you can love it (due to it's comedic action) or hate it (example i can't buy the house in windhelm... Damn dark brotherhood :() It is still part of the game. I love this game, it's one of the greatest i've played. It just sucks you into the world. So many things to explore (and die from).

zephonwing

Skyrim - excellent game, but I never had so much bugs and crashes on the 360... on average, it's a freeze/crash every 6 hours. I thought it was because of my xbox over-heating, but after I get a fan... it still crashes. Bugs, dragons flying backward (which also trigger lags) is my main problem. Archer is really over-powered. I can basically sneak-kill every boss in the game with an un-enchanted bow (but sneak damage x3 and arrow damage x2 is devastating). I have another dual-enchanted bow with 30pt fire + 30pt shock, which takes down almost any dragon in less than five shots.

Archery is broken though. If you can aim and get head or even neck shots then you can one shot baddies even at Lvl 1. I tried at the beginning of my play through and I was really surprised at how easy it was.

sad news for me, Lydia died 20 minutes after I gave her my only set of Dragon Armor...and I didn't notice until about 2 hours later because I was tied up in the main quest....Now I have to back track to find my stuff that is lost forever.

Skyrim = GOTY in my eyes. I can't deny that the game has bugs , but all games do , and in most games you can exploit them if you wish to! 200+ hours already ingame and i never faced any bug that is gamebreaking or annoying. This is the only game this year that really shows you how Bethesda has put so much work into every corner of the world they created , not some basic corridor game like most of the titles coming out lately. My only complain will be the UI for PC version , apart from that , the game superior any other game this year.

JLabeach

You cant even keep the skeleton key in skyrim, you gotta give it to Nocturnal "where it belongs" :(

Davito

Yeah, this is not a 9.0 game for me. The adventuring is superb but the bugs, AI, some bad voice acting and weak main plot screw it up. If Bethesda had just kept that initial image of Alduin as being an awe-inspiring unstoppable force, instead of an elusive coward relying on other dragons, it would be such a different game. Honestly, Trolls and Bears were more dangerous than dragons for most of the game.

skiwalker9292

@kenmanius did you take an arrow to the knee?

kenmanius

Bugs are not entertainment. I don't know where they all of a sudden started to get the idea that theyr'e endearing. They only serve to break the fluidity and immersion of the game. Like I can't fast travel from Whiterun cuz some idiot bot from the Companions is stuck in a loop and won't stop chasing me over the world and engaging me in conversation. If Bethesda ever made a game of this magnitude that wasn't full of this crap it would be amazing, but it won't happen. Probably take twice as long to make the game.
