The HotSpot - Mass Effect 3 - 2/29/12

Mass Effect 3 executive producer Casey Hudson makes his triumphant return to The HotSpot to talk about closing out Commander Shepard's trilogy.

by

The HotSpot moves the stars for its first (and only?!) Leap Day show. Mass Effect 3 executive producer Casey Hudson digs in with Tom Mc Shea, Carolyn Petit, and Tom Magrino as they do their part to increase your galactic readiness level. Please note: Failing to watch this show does not preclude you from achieving the optimal, complete ending of Mass Effect 3. But, whoa boy, will it be harder. (P.S.: No spoilers, bro.)

I wish they had waited for a while to make a spoiler-full Hotspot, because although lots of points are valid here, they can't speak about the specific highlights of the game and how hard it may have been to design them, and the disappointments people have been obsessing about. They could have faced him with pretty difficult inquiries ... Playing the game actually gives more hindsight into the points developed here. For example : I played very paragon completionist games for all the series, so the end of the Rannoch mission was a happy ending. But then, I looked up what else could happen. And the unperfect way to do this mission is just so more powerful emotionally. So it makes you wonder : shouldn't the element of choice be more limited or much harder so you would have to make very very hard decisions ? I don't have the answer to that, it could have been interesting to hear what Bioware has to say about it as the game's designers.

I can't believe you guys soft-pitched this guy for an hour. This is a podcast, not FOX news - ask some hard questions. Why did you restrict the Prothean to people who pay $80? Do you feel bad for releasing an incomplete game in chunks, each of which have to be bought? When did Hotspot become soft?

I am really not much of a shooter fan but I loved the rpg / sci-fi story aspect of Mass Effect; so I have to say, I really appreciate the new narrative setting. In general, from the sound of it, Mass Effect 3 is going to appeal to a lot of people. Excellent (8.5) HotSpot episode!

@TigusVidiks - Nobody said anything about dumbing down the overall experience. Just providing the ability for those who otherwise wouldn't play a game at all to play it in a way that makes it accessible to them. The game as we know it is still there and playable with the standard levels of difficulty and skill required. What difference does it make if someone else can enjoy the experience by playing it in a way different from how you want to play it? Why this thought that somehow the ranks of gamers will swell to be full of people who don't actually want to play a game? Holding to this idea that there is only one way a game should be played is the kind of thinking that could push the gaming industry out of business.

@endorbr Yes, I saw his explanation a milion times already in different places. But my point stands. Because they ARE altering the overall experience. If they give the power to people to not actually play the game to know the story ending, and if in the process they give normal gamers a chance to finish the game and get most achievements in a dumb down easier version I don't think that is atracting new people to gaming. Ultimatly will only open a door to where many normal gamers will go, just to be the first, to be faster, easier, or face a lesser chalenge. In the long run, this is a process of education. They will be educating gamers to work less, be less skillful, take less time. And in time people will start demanding for easier dumber games, because that's what they are used to. Saying it in a simpler way: You think that dumbing it down, or giving the chance to play a easier dumber version of the game, will atract film lovers to gaming (those people that just want to see a good story without the gaming hassle). I think that doing it will do the opsite. Instead of atracting movie fans to games, it will atract game fans to movies (without the hassle of actually having to play it.) .

Yeah those PR interviews don't really offer anything... Pls try to invite them after the fact when there's actually things to discuss instead of just listening to his prepared statements written to make us buy the game

i love mass effect but man did this guy skate through all of the questions. Most of the questions that he had actually were answers to completely different ones. Still excited, but I wish this PR junk could be dropped. I can understand being cryptic during say the E3 coverage but the game is like 5 days away from release.

Finally got my brother to give ME a try, and it's funny watching him go into paralytic fits worrying about "canon." I've tried telling him that there really is no "canon" (for example, I have a maxed-out Renegade FemShep with the same "optimized" storyline as my maxed-out Paragon BroShep), but still he persists. Hopefully, hearing the same thing from Mr. Hudson gets my brother to lighten up and just enjoy the games.

I like how Hudson explained that a good written character is someone who some players love and some players hate. Me and my friend have polar opposite Shepards (mine fully Paragon, hi fully Renegade) My favorite characters are Legion and Wrex, his favorites are Garrus and Jack (which I hate Jack). So I can see his point. Great HotSpot.

@DrOoLeR11: Or you can mak a toast to Joker, which is what I did because if it wasn't for his flying skills this series would have only been a one parter instead of 3.

@TigusVidiks - The idea is to attract people to gaming by giving you the OPTION to alter how the game plays for each individual. So long as developers aren't altering the overall experience, which Hudson made very clear that Bioware did not, then what difference does it make that the OPTION exists for players who otherwise wouldn't touch this game to enjoy it also by focusing less on the elements that they don't enjoy? Gaming is a niche market as it is and most developers are not going to totally alienate their core audience just to try and attract potential new customers. So long as it remains an OPTION I can't see this as anything but a benefit to the gaming industry.

Where to go from here with Mass Effect? Bioware has the choice of stick with Shepard as the main character and establish a new big bad... Or go in the direction of stick with the same universe with a new main character either during the same timeframe as ME1-3 or after 3 with a new big bad... I'm thinking I would rather they stick with Shepard and come up with something else for him to go up against. Whatever they do just stick with the action shooter RPG formula and stay away from MMO territory.

How could they NOT have known it was C&C Renegade? And who are they if they haven't played it? Really? Please!

Asura's Wrath should have had a story mode. No QTE, they couldn't really dumb down the combat to make it easier, though...

I think the whole idea of opting out of story choice or weakening combat is a good idea....wait hear me out...By doing it this way they dont need to permanetly weaken the entire game for everyone. I love to experience the whole game and want some challenge so I can have that while people that hate shooting or hate choice can have the game they want also. Its a far better path than watering it all down or burning players into a over done smore.

Great show! The Mass Effect saga certainly has provided me with more fun, joy and excitement than any other video game. Im really glad to know that "hours of exploration" will, once again, be possible on the Citadel. Huh??? How is it possible to "Die" on "Easy" in the first game??? Oh wait - i did die once...when I mistakenly drove the Mako off the edge of a cliff while on Noveria. I was trying to avoid damage from incoming projectiles. Oh well - what are you gonna do - the game was still the purest form of awesomness.

I have to say that although I understand you want to give players the chance to choose if they want a game or a movie, I think it's wrong. Games are games. Since always the goal in games is primarily about skill to overcome the chalenges Devs trow out. If Devs start folding to that and trying to please those people who want to watch cartoons, or that say it's too hard even when they are playing in the easy mode, ultimatly, they are only helping to dumb down players, game, and overall industry. Yes, stories today are n ot just good for videogames, they are good to a wide range of public. And that means, that it would be a wonderful way to atract more people to games. Instead, dumbing down the gameplay part, will only serve to loose good gamers by slowly requiring less skill. Still, very nice interview. Hudson 's always on the top of his game.
