The HotSpot - 04/26/2012

GameSpot's original podcast rides off into the sunset with a look at Prototype 2 and Trials Evolution.

After a bit of a break, the HotSpot reconvenes for one last go as Chris Watters, Tom Mc Shea, Kevin VanOrd, and Brendan Sinclair recap a couple of fun-focused games in Prototype 2 and Trials Evolution. Then the gang wades into the used game debate, gets hype for NBA Baller Beats, and talks about the future of Mario and Call of Duty. Plus, because absolutely no one demanded it: The Return of ESRB Rating Description Theater!

Also, moving pictures!

A bit of an unceremonious end for the HotSpot. It makes me sad to see the show go, I've been a regular listener for about 4 years and even when other gaming podcasts came and went off my subscription list, this show always stayed. I would've hoped for a little more fanfare for such a long-running show's end, but apparently not. Gaming sites are being overhauled all over the internet and it's always sad to see people or shows go that we all seemed to enjoy. Best of luck to Magrino and any of the other unmentioned lay-offs and I'm looking forward to seeing what is going to replace this great show.

I'm much more sad about this than I ever thought I would be. I saw it coming though. Gamespot has had such an abrupt shift. I don't think the shift is bad at all. It's just not the Gamespot I had grown accustomed to. I looked forward to hearing these guys voices every weak and it's going to be strange without it. Gamespot was and still is the only gaming site I can handle. IGN confuses me, kotaku feels almost like Fox news of gaming press to me and Destructoid bores me. Gamespot is still my treasure though.

Is there a specific reason why they're shutting down the HotSpot?

The podcast was what kept me coming back to Gamespot. I can't imagine what plans are in store for Gamespot that begin with scrapping its best feature. Its absence certainly isn't going to be filled with lame video content like Screen Tear and Escape from Mt. Stupid.

Thank you to everyone who was ever part of this podcast :). You always provided a fantastic show and there will be a little hole in my weeks listening from now on :(

Best episode in a long time, thankyou Sinclair for one final effort. You and the rest of the crew are amazing.

Wow, Mc Shea is already going bald, got a comb over going. Cool.......And complaining about a video game being unrealistic? Ummm...... try again.

I've only been with the HotSpot for less than 3 of your 7 years and I welled up towards the end. I can only imagine how guys feel about the whole thing with all the time and passion you've put into it. Love you guys. <3

Why is CBS killing Gamespot? We get new bland faces without any form of introduction, doing their own thing seperate from one another. It's all distant, the sense of friends and family in Gamespot is gone. It's becoming corporate and cold. Is shutting down the HotSpot the final blow? It feels so. I guess they bought Giant Bomb to get back the audience they are pushing away.

i just listened to the last show, really sad to see the hotspot go, it begun for me in 2008 with brendan, the first day that he hosted the show and ends with him also. tom did a great job as host and it seems he had great ideas for the show, real sad to see him go, in my opinnion nothing get you as close to a game journalist or a reviewer like a podcast does, so i really hope that soon we have another great show like the hotspot. thank you very much for all this years. saludos desde Argentina

I just listened today to the hot spot, just to find that it is the last hot spot. For the last two year the hot spot team have kept me compeny in my car on my long drive to work. They have kept me informed in the world of gaming. I have laughed and cried at the antice they got up to. This is a pod cast that I will sorly miss having in my ear holes week to week. Thank you for all the time and work you all have done over the years, I am greatful to all the hot spot team, thank you.

@vgsak2055 I tried to check out that episode but it's not working, I'll try again though because it's always awesome when the whole crew loses their minds with laughter.

To be honest, I enjoyed the podcast much more when Brendan was in charge. Magrino wasn't bad but the charm was definitely fading away for me. It couldn't be that difficult to put a podcast together though, right? I assume that Gamespot has another podcast in the works right now. Podcasting has become an important part of gaming press.

Brendan and company- thanks for the Hotspot- been listening for years. Probably my favorite moment is from the 7/21/2009 episode where you read a homework assignment sent in from a listener. "Is my Wii Fit? I can plunge your Endless Ocean with my Smooth Moves until Twighlight, Princess." The gang pretty much loses it and I did too... great times. I look forward to your future projects!

@Polybren @Kevin-V Thanks for all the great shows. Send our regards to Tom, if you can (is he still TMag_GnarlySail on twitter?). This has been one of my favorite things on gamespot through the years, and I think it shall remain irreplacable. I'll just ask this of you: Whatever you do next, if it's possible to make it available as audio-only as well (in design as well as technicality), it may do well in filling some of the space the Hotspot left behind - one of the best things about podcasts at large and the Hotspot, specifically is that I could listen to it and fully enjoy it whilst engaging in more mundane tasks - something which is summarily impossible to accomplish with video content - there is nothing that I can accomplish well and reliably without being able to see what I'm doing. Except listening to audiobooks and podcasts, that is. Just a suggestion.

It would be nice for guys at gamespot to make a tribute to Tom Magrino for his work on the site. Sort of a 'so long' feature like they did for Sophia Tong when she left. Albeit she left willingly.

Well thanks for the show, this was my sole reason to come to this site. I wish you guys the best of luck. BTW it was nice that Brendan was the host for the last show, still my favorite host by far.

Like a few others, I've listened to the podcast all the way back to Rich Gallup. Not a happy event now that the podcast is going away.

I'll miss the show dearly... It was always refreshing to hear all of your views on games and the gaming industry. Mad props to you all for doing such a great job. I'm looking forward to whatever you all have planned out for GS's future.

I've been listening to this for along time, from the Rich Gallup days, Jeff hosting, leaving, coming back and all of the crazy Tom comments through the years... It's been a blast hotspot, boom boom pow away and hotspot out...

Trials HD reminds a lot of Excitebike. Does anyone remember Excitebike on the NES? Thanks for all the podcasts guys.

***[For Brendan Sinclair]*** Are you delving into the murky water of censorship? I certainly apologize to you and the rest of the staff if I offended a buddy of yours...I think Tom is a great guy and was the right choice to take over the HotSpot, but deleting a post that expressed legitimate criticism of the show is cowardly. My comments regarding the [12/21/11] episode with Daniel Erickson & the [12/9/11] Skyrim episode were factual and meant to be taken as constructive criticism. They weren't expressed in an expletive filled rant that would warrant or give legitimacy to censoring a listener's right to post a comment on this forum. My roommates and I [all avid HotSpot listeners]here at UCB wouldn't mind an explanation. Thanks

I've listened to the majority of the hotspot podcast since 2006. The podcast was the very reason I kept coming back to gamespot because it made me care for the editors and grow an attachment towards them and what they did. It was sad to see old editors go but a delight to see new editors come. Thanks for all the memories! I will miss this great podcast. Hotspot out......

@jazilla -- No, the Bombcast does not become the podcast for both sites; what gave you that idea? Don't worry: more wonderful things will emerge.

Thank you so much for everything you guys have done. I've listened every week for the last three and a half years, and I definitely wouldn't feel at home in the video game community without the Hotspot. It makes me sad to see it go.

This is by far the closest I've been to getting a broken heart due to a podcast. Thanks for all the fun and interesting game-related hours. Hope I can still get to hear you guys talk about games somehow. Can't wait to see/hear those new shows. Is Carolyn Petit still working with at GS? She, McChea and VanOrd are my favorite GS editors.

Thanks for bringing us the Hotspot all these years. Hope the new show ideas work out. Hearing the editorial staff talk about games is one of the highlights of the site.
