The Getaway: Black Monday screeches off to retail

Sony's sequel to its 2003 London crime caper makes a break for store shelves; the game's different endings are dependent on the player's "moral choices."

Time to brush up on your cockney slang, geezer. Sony Computer Entertainment America today announced that The Getaway: Black Monday has overcome its delays and hit stores in North America, two months after it was released in the UK. The action game is a sequel to 2003's The Getaway and is an exclusive for the PlayStation 2.

In Black Monday, gamers will take control of three characters: London police sergeant Ben Mitchell, boxer Eddie O'Conner, and computer hacker Sam. By piecing together the three stories and choosing certain paths, the game will take on different endings, finishing with a bullet-ridden climax with the London underground's new crime boss, Viktor Skobel.

While exploring the authentically re-created 25 square miles of London (with 17 new locations not featured in the original, including London's famed subway system), players will be able to run on foot or drive just about any vehicle, providing they can pull the driver out and race off without resistance. The "cinematic" storyline will unfold over 22 missions interspersed with cutscenes that use "performance captured" acting and will be supported by a score from UK breakbeat label Ninja Tune.

"We wanted to create a game that offered the player a brand-new, refined game-and-movie experience that built on the previous game," said Peter Edward, game producer, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

The Getaway: Black Monday is rated M and carries an SRP of $49.99. For more information, check out our full review.
