The first image of this year's Call of Duty game, in development at Modern Warfare 3 co-developer Sledgehammer Games, has appeared. The image was first shown at the Game Developers Conference last month, where it appeared on screen for a fraction of a second.

IGN was able to capture the image, which is reportedly a depiction of what an in-game rendered character looks like. What we're looking at appears to be a soldier who is so finely detailed that we can see the pores on his nose and face.

Last year at GDC, Activision technical director Jorge Jimenez showed off some seriously impressive character models. It's not clear, though, if this image from the new Call of Duty game was built using that technology.

Activision has not formally announced this year's Call of Duty game, but the publisher typically reveals new games in the series in May, so we might not have to wait much longer to find out what's in store. The game is described as "ambitious" and "creative," as well as "perhaps the best Call of Duty game ever created."
