The Empire strikes gold

Star Wars: Empire at War enters a factory far, far away; film-based PC real-time strategy due in stores February 16.

PC gamers got one step closer to controlling the entire galaxy today. LucasArts has announced that development on Star Wars: Empire at War is complete, paving the way for a February 16 retail release.

Empire at War is a real-time strategy game based on the Star Wars universe and takes place a few years before Episode IV. Like the best parts of the films, the game is action-based and requires tactical management rather than tedious resource gathering. Both the Rebellion and Empire are playable, and recognizable figures such as Darth Vader also enter the action.

Gamers looking to feel a little bit of The Force now can download the Empire at War demo from GameSpot. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's recent hands-on. Star Wars: Empire at War is rated T for Teen and will be sold for $49.99.

Well, the demo is waiting on my drive until it's chuncked 4.7 GB full, so that I can burn it all on a DVD. (a couple of patched, demos, programs, etc.) As for background: I always like the films (not the new ones, only the old SW films, since the FX weren't that great, but at least nicer than those who get blasted into your face today... and the game on the SNES (side scroller type game) which wasn't that great at all. SW seems like one of those things you can't make enough games for. We had a SW flight sim type game which you controller Y or X wings and shoot people/turrets/etc. down of course and now there is an RTS. I'll install and try the game and see what it looks like. I'll let you know.

I think I'll wait to see what the reviewers say (of other sites than this, naturally ;) ) before I make my choice on this one I think. I played the demo and now instead of definitely buying it, I'm borderline.

Hey LA fix your crappy MMO before you allow anything else to be released!

I didn't particularly like the demo when I first played it and to be honest, damn near cancelled my reservation. I'm glad I didn't because I've been playing the demo a ton lately and now that I've gotten the gameplay down I've got the utmost confidence that this game's gonna be a lot of fun. Couple more weeks, I can't wait for this game to get here.

although i can't say that I am THAT interested, it looks to be a solid game, and i will at least try the demo.

Although I love Star Wars, after playing the demo I'm just not that impressed with this game. I'm actually looking forward to Battle for Middle-Earth II more than Empire at War.

I love how the promotional literature for this game keeps re-emphasizing the fact that it "focuses on action" rather than "tedious resource gathering". In other words, what they're trying to say is "We promise this game won't suck as bad as Rebellion. Honest!" It isn't that resource gathering in strategy games has to necessarily be boring - it's just that Lucasarts managed to screw it up so horribly in the past, they're doing everything possible to distance this game from the aforementioned stinker Rebellion. Last I checked though, games such as Starcraft, Dune II, and Warcraft all managed to devote ample time to resource gathering without boring gamers out of their skulls.
