A TV show based on the Oscar-winning Boston mafia movie The Departed is on the way. We first heard about this project in February and now, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed it's going to happen as an hour-long drama for Amazon.

The story is similar to The Departed and the 2002 Hong Kong movie Infernal Affairs that it's based on. It follows a young police officer who goes undercover to try to shut down a Latino gang. At the same time, the gang sends one of its own in the police force. They are on a collision course and bad things will happen.

It's set in Chicago and is described as a "gritty, suspenseful" drama. Like the movies, the main characters will try to stay true to their mission and come out alive.

The Departed, which was directed by Martin Scorsese, took home four Oscars at the 79th Academy Awards in 2007, including Best Picture. The film starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson, though there is no word on who might play the lead roles in the TV show.

Producer Roy Lee is coming back for the TV show, which will be written by Jason Richman (Mercy Street, Detroit 1-8-7).

This is just the latest TV project for Amazon. Last Friday, Amazon announced new pilots, including reboots of The Tick and I Love Dick. The legal drama Goliath, starring Billy Bob Thorton, premieres in October. Some of Amazon's other original shows include Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle.
