After Starbreeze's The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was released to critical acclaim last year, people immediately began to wonder what the team would take on next. Before too long, it was announced that the developer was teaming up with Majesco to release a game based on the Top Cow comic series The Darkness. Now, the first footage of The Darkness for the Xbox 360 has been shown.

A very brief trailer of The Darkness was shown as part of MTV's special devoted to the unveiling of Microsoft's Xbox 360. The trailer shows a few ghoulish creatures crawling up to a rooftop to meet their master. The creatures are, collectively, known as the Darkness, and their master is a mob hitman named Jackie Estacado, who somehow picked up some twisted black-magic abilities while out working for his bosses.

The clip shown on MTV doesn't really look like gameplay, and it's very clearly intended for use as a trailer, but overall, what's been shown so far looks pretty nice. The character models are solid, and they seem to move well, given the limited scope of the footage. No information has been revealed about the actual game, beyond that you'll play the role of Estacado and your eventual goal will be to take out an evil Mafia boss.

The Darkness is scheduled for release in 2006. We'll have more on the game as it becomes available.
