TGS 2011: Final Fantasy XIII-2 Updated Hands-On

We get to show you our hands-on of the build that was showcased at the last E3.

by

While we did recap Final Fantasy XIII-2's Bresha Ruins segment at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo, we now get to show you how the level turned out in glorious video. We not only fought Atlas and engaged in cinematic actions against him, but we also fiddled around with the familiar Paradigm Shift-heavy battle system. We also got a few monsters to use and switch around as our third party member to tag alongside Noel and Serah.

The pot-riding cat called Cait Sith acts as a healer, while the red jello with hands and eyes called Flan casts spells as a ravager. The wild chocobo just for this demo is classified as the game's commando and deals a lot of damage with its beak. All three can initiate a special move called feral rage; the feral bar is filled up over time, and you can press the triangle button to unleash animal hell.

Cait Sith can do a multi-hitting scratch attack, while Flan does a hundred-hand slap attack. The chocobo gears back and then lunges and furiously pecks its target to death. All feral rage moves require cinematic action inputs to be pulled off successfully and deal the maximum amount of damage.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be out in Japan on December 15. North America and Asia will be getting it on January 31 next year, while Europe is getting it on February 3.

@joker_with_card True rpgs? Final Fantasy games are far from rpg compared to games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Those are true rpgs. (Sorry but I had to say this. As games jrpgs are good but as rpgs they're more like ridiculous)

this game is so far from final fantasy where is the true RPG like ff7 ff8 ff10

I loved FF13, but this is certainly not what I was hoping for. I don't like this concept of QTEs, fighting with random monsters you picked up or the fact that Serah and Noel are the main characters. I would have preferred the game stuck with Ligtning, or moved on to a completely new protagonist.

I'm sorry but I've said this before.... This game resembles nothing of a final fantasy. the main character looks like a grown up sora if I've ever seen one. The monsters joining the party as characters reminds me of dragon quest monsters, the puzzles remind me of dissidia. This game is simply nothing but a jumble of ideas from other established games re-used to try to make a new one. Hence the reason i call this game: Final Fantasy Duo-Decim Monster Kingdom. Besides who has ever heard of a Final Fantasy game with two characters and a troop of monsters that look like you picked them up straight out of the Midgar Slums. Just watching the previews makes me feel like I've gone to the circus. Karneval anyone?!

Its clear from peoples comments that different FF titles appeal to different people. I loved FF12 but was completely underwhelmed by 13. 13-2 i think i'll pass.

Looks like people are missing the reason why sequels are made >.> too bad...

Auto-battle for main char with AI in direct control of the support chars with no way of customizing the behaviour and a linear path between save-points almost the whole way from start to finish. Not really the best base to build a sequel on, I'd be much more interested in a ff12-2 tbh. 12 wasn't prefect but it had some very nice ideas, can't say the same about 13.

Why the hell is the garbage that was XIII getting a sequal? XIII was a PoFS that tries to be an action game.

I genuinely feel that Final Fantasy XIII is among the top three worst entries in the series. I would give out "Worst Entry in the FF Series" awards in this order: #3 Final Fantasy XIII #2 Final Fantasy VIII #1 Final Fantasy X And two of the three worst titles have now officially received a sequel.

@Guest_1001 more like 30 hours of boring, monotonous gameplay. Annoying as heck characters, especially Vanille and Hope, after 10 hours I wanted to kill them myself. Sazh could kill all other FF characters, you're right, he would bore them to death.

Guest_1001
Guest_1001

@ahpuck - Wrong. I'm an FF fan and I enjoyed XIII. Why? Because it offered 30+ hours (minimum) of good gameplay for £40. Even without that, there would still be several reasons I liked the game. It's worth playing, if only once. Except for Lightning, I liked all the characters (yes, even Vanille), something I've never done before. Sazh alone could kick Cloud, Sephiroth, (bloody) Tidus and all the other FF douchebag pretty boys' arses with one hand tied behind his back. And he'd know what a black cape was while doing it. I'm not saying it's perfect. Far from it; in FF, I expect minigames, endless sidequests and levelling-up systems that make level grinding rewarding rather than a chore. FFXIII didn't have any of that. All I'm saying is that FFXIII doesn't deserve the hate it gets.

I want a Japanese voice track for this but of course we'll get another excuse on how they ran out of space :/

Looks and plays the same as that piece of trash FF 13 to me. Only non Final Fantasy fans seem to love 13.

@Chaoskillakam I agree. We will see. While I didn't appreciate XIII's story (plus a few spectacularly bad design choices), I found it intriguing, and I now know why. Google "Japan's identity crisis" to find psychological papers about their culture (this is relevant: http://www.peace-ashram.org/essay/homogeneity.html). The concept of culturally binding yet undesireable fates is foreign to me as an America, but very relavent to them. The story was probably made for a Japanese audience first and foremost. That doesn't make me happy about the way that XIII turned out (see "setting Vanille on fire" for details), but because of the story's cultural relavance, I am willing to give Square more slack. Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nubuo Uematsu are gone from new Final Fantasy games, and even though Square has had good games and horrible games, it has tried hard to tell a good story for two decades now. I'll check out XIII-2, although I do so with reservation on two counts: (1) Flower Field music in any and all situations, including battle and the bowls of the earth (see FFVI for correct music style and distribution, and FFX for Ject theme). (2) Turning Lighting from fully clothed and cool to exposed buttocks and sexy (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/117/1179023p1.html) ... really? Why? That's like trying to make Darth Kreia or Flemeth sexy. You just don't do it.

to bad SE is such a good company (which in this case JRPG game company), but they need to show their fang, and i see SE fail to show their fang as JRPG game company nowadays, c'mon SE i always follow your game (i like 3rd birthday) so show that you can answer people hope, profit will follow if you make good game pronto!!

I think I am officially done with Final Fantasy. Unless they revamp the battle system.. and make it an action RPG... but of course that would actually take cutting edge development which apparently Japanese Game devs have a hard time doing this generation.

Black_Id_Jenova
Black_Id_Jenova

too bad SE is such good company but they need to emphasize their position.. (which in this case JRPG Game Company), it's not wrong to be company that promote another studio (like EA or etc) but stick to the role mate!!!! I fail to see something in SE game nowadays...

@raeldor and @008Agent Well I gave it a clean 30 hours (agony) and gave up when a boss on a bridge suddenly became too hard for me to bother harvest. The linearity was agonizing and after the 30 hours I couldn't bear it any more.

is it me or is it that they don't have any good ideas anymore (pardon my english i'm french). Not that i dislike XIII (IX was my favorite). Story was just good, and the graphics, have to say, gorgeous. But that's it. And now whe have : - Type 0 : Valkyria chronicles with magic and eons. - monsters in our team in XIII-2 and oh surprise, monsters too in kingdom hearts 3D... To be honest, i know i'll play these games, but i am just not surprised anymore by any of this !

008Agent
008Agent

@Raeldor: +1 UP to and including 12, it was minimally good (set aside X-2 *shivers*). I pre-ordered 13 and I wanted to return it after one day... They won't see my money anytime soon...

Raeldor

I've played a LOT of the Final Fantasy games and loved them, but the linearity of FF13 just killed it for me. When I play an RPG, I love to explore and do the side quests, and that aspect had pretty much been stripped bare. I loved everything up to and including FF12 (I thought the battle system in 12 worked really well), but until they release an FF14 I remain deluded. Sorry Square.

I just don't know what to think with Square Enix any more. They just keep cranking out games now with elements that I can't imagine any Final Fantasy fan asking for. Oh wow we can jump now! Why would I need to jump? We were able to do that in FFX-2 also and it was pretty much pointless in that game too. I can't stand the new kind of battle system they've adopted since FFXII. Final Fantasy has always been a turn based RPG. I don't want to have to make rapid choices and pay constant attention to every detail of every battle. It's supposed to be more about strategy and developing your characters and actually being able to control each character's actions. It's not an action series. Go back to the days of Square without the Enix and stop trying to change a beloved turn based RPG into an action adventure movie that I have no real control over.

Feburary, that is awesome timing so I would have to pay all my bills in December and early January, then save up for some awesome FF 13-2 and Soul Calibur 5 as well as Dragon's Crown and Lollipop Chainsaw that would come around in the early part of 2012

cant wait for this!!! even if serah is a bit boring in XIII, wondering what she can do and contribute to the story. I read somewhere that versus 13 is already at 100% development. Theyre just waiting for the master disk. hope they release it next year as well. I can smell tons of cash flowing in for square.
