TGS 2005: King's Field Mobile 2 Hands-On

We slashed our way through a level of King's Field Mobile 2 at the Tokyo Game Show 2005.

TOKYO--Admittedly, there aren't a whole lot of first-person games that are exclusive to Japan, especially not on a cell phone. So, even though King's Field Mobile 2 does not currently have a North American release date, the chance that it's making its way over to the US is pretty high. Basically, King's Field Mobile 2 is your standard first-person action game, in which you assume the role of a character from some time period where kings and swords were pretty big. It was hard to make out what exactly is going on at all times because the game is still in Japanese, but that's of little consequence when you get to stab things with a really big sword. We imagine that it has some relationship to the King's Field PlayStation games, although it's clearly not a direct port, given the divergence between the two platforms.

During our test play, we roamed around an outside area that was walled in and littered with standard barrels and chests. The barrels weren't breakable, but the chests could be opened and sometimes had pretty cool gear inside. In the early level, we didn't see a lot of the variety of weapons and armor, but we imagine that will all come with time, since that's the crux of the game. Instead, we fought some monsters in the outside environment, namely a Venus flytrap and a snake. We experienced a few of the more unpleasant effects of fighting a snake, specifically getting poisoned and taking damage over and over again. If we had found an antidote, life might have been a little sweeter, but instead we just died.

Further adventures in King's Field Mobile 2 will take players to the very depths of experience-gaining and gold-collecting. We must admit that this was one of the more surprising and unique titles we saw at the Tokyo Game Show, and we are looking forward to hearing more about this classic franchise's mobile entry in the near future.
