TGS 2003: Namco to bring Kaena to the PlayStation 2

Namco is turning the upcoming CG movie, Kaena: The Prophecy, into a PlayStation 2 game.

Though no playable version is being shown at the Tokyo Game Show, Namco is showing two brief trailers for a property known as Kaena. The first is a movie trailer, focusing on the impending Japanese release of a French-made CG movie starring the voice talents of Kirsten Dunst, Richard Harris, Anjelica Huston, Keith David, and Michael McShane. The second is for a PlayStation 2 game based on the movie and developed by Xilam Multimedia, the French development company responsible for the 2001 release of Stupid Invaders for the Dreamcast.

Not much of the game was shown in Namco's trailer, which mostly displays scenes from the movie. But from what was shown, it appears that Kaena will be a third-person action game that takes place from a mostly static side-view or slightly overhead perspective, not entirely unlike Onimusha. Kaena will be armed with a blade, and the gameplay clips show Kaena attacking long-legged froglike creatures with that blade, executing combo attacks, which ring up on the screen like a fighting game.

Kaena is scheduled to be released on the PlayStation 2 sometime in 2004.
