TGS 2000Sky Gunner Hands-On
Sky Gunner is a PlayStation 2 game from Sony. It combines cutesy character design with the thrill of air combat against gigantic airships. However, some odd camera choices make the game a little strange.
Sky Gunner puts you in the role of a pilot. Your craft is an extremely small propeller-powered plane, which is armed with a machine gun and a few types of secondary weapons, which all can be used when you're close enough to acquire a lock on your target. While most of your targets are planes similar to your own, the level shown at the Tokyo Game Show also had a gigantic airship and a large blimp. Each of the larger ships had several different points that could be targeted, allowing you to disable a ship's weapons before closing in for the kill.
While the game has a nice graphical look to it, the camera is really odd. It always points at your current target. So if you're flying away from your target, you can't see where you're going. There is a toggle that lets you switch to a behind-the-plane view, but this also turns off your ability to target and lock-on to enemy craft.
If the questionable camera can be worked out, Sky Gunner should be a pretty exciting air combat game for the PlayStation 2.
