TGS 2000: Winback Hands-On

Koei's Winback for the PS2 makes an appearance at the ongoing Tokyo Game Show. How does it differ from the N64 version? Find out within.

Comments

WinBack for the PS2 is a direct port of the N64 version with a few additions that weren't technically possible in the original. In the N64 version, it was possible to select from 28 different characters when playing a two player deathmatch, but that number dropped to eight when four players went head-to-head. In the PS2 version, all 28 characters will be selectable when battling it out against each other.

Another slight, but significant, difference in the PS2 version of the game is that speech has been added. The characters come to life now that voices have been added to the once text-ridden action game. Visually, the game looks extremely sharp, especially when compared with the original. The characters and environments, while identical in design, now look realistically gritty. The control has also been left the same.

While certainly not one of the most impressive games on the show floor, WinBack for the PS2 still seems to strike a good balance between action and stealth just as the N64 version did, which makes it a fun game to play.
