TGS 06: Metal Gear Solid 4 TGS Trailer Impressions

Hot on the heels of the amazing-looking E3 trailer, the TGS trailer offers a glimpse at some new gameplay from the PlayStation 3's most anticipated game. Wait, Young Snake?!

by

TOKYO--It's practically a rule at this point that every major game industry trade show needs to have some sort of explosive Metal Gear Solid trailer to get everybody talking before, during, and after the event. Developer Kojima Productions seems equally as talented at putting together amazing trailers as it is at making great games, so with this in mind, we went into this year's Tokyo Game Show eagerly looking forward to anything new on Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PlayStation 3. And, once again, Kojima Productions delivered, this time with a roughly six-minute trailer showcasing what appear to be a lot of new gameplay mechanics from this next game in its popular stealth action series. Back in May, the E3 trailer for MGS4 wowed us with lots of tantalizing new details about the characters and story, not to mention with some really impressive graphics. This new trailer doesn't show off Raiden slicing and dicing or drop any obscure clues about the plot, but instead portrays a weathered old Solid Snake doing what he does best: sneaking, fighting, and surviving against all odds.

The trailer takes place entirely in the war-torn, dusty cityscapes we've seen in previous sequences from MGS4. There's not much preamble before the bullets start flying, and the trailer mostly shows some of the ways in which Snake will be able to elude or dispatch his opponents. And there is some surprising variety on display here, including a bunch of moves never before seen in an MGS game. At first we see Snake performing by-the-numbers military maneuvers, running through the streets while keeping a low profile, ducking around corners to elude foes, and so on. We also see Snake lying prone, rolling from side to side to avoid hostile fire.

Then a surprise appears in the form of the little robot operated by Snake's friend Otacon, which we saw in the very first MGS4 trailer. It turns out this speedy little thing is more than just a recon bot, because in one sequence, it rolls on up to an unsuspecting enemy guard and delivers an electric shock that drops this guy in an instant.

As for Snake, we get to see him climbing into an empty oil barrel and rolling through the streets, plowing through and past enemy soldiers. It's almost comical but thrilling--a new spin on the old cardboard box, if you will. Flashes of first-person-perspective gunplay meanwhile suggest that Metal Gear Solid's traditional point-and-shoot controls will still be intact. Some very impressive motion-captured animations are on display as wild gunfights ensue, and all the while, the environments look completely believable. However, notably, a recent issue of Famitsu magazine revealed that MGS4 will feature a new over-the-shoulder shooting perspective that instantly brings to mind Resident Evil 4. This new perspective doesn't get much screen time during the new trailer, but it brings to mind some exciting possibilities about how MGS4 might play.

Another remarkable sequence in the new trailer has one of the new bipedal Metal Gear robots "sniffing" around with its antenna-like tentacle, apparently trying to spot Snake. Despite Snake's camouflage, he's spotted right underneath the machine's foot, so it tries to stomp him dead with its powerful legs...but of course, Snake rolls out of the way just in time and then fires straight up into the thing's belly with his assault rifle. The Metal Gear unit collapses, a scene that seems to reveal this new model's weak point. Moments later, though, it clambers back to its feet, ready to cause more destruction.

Things only seem to get worse for Snake as the trailer wears on--one of the last sequences has him crawling straight through an enemy firing zone. Here's where the game's "no place to hide" theme seems resoundingly clear--Snake seems completely pinned down and helpless. However, even while lying prone, he's able to chuck a grenade overhead, and it takes out an enemy squad just like that. The various new fighting-while-prone maneuvers seem to be the emphasis of this trailer overall, at least for those of us watching for signs of new gameplay elements.

The trailer doesn't provide a lot of context for all this action but intersperses the visuals with brief oblique phrases that fans who've been keeping up with MGS4 will note clearly tie in to the game's solemn themes:

No beginning, no end. No time, no future. No virtue, no vice. No place for heroes. No time for heroes. No place in time. No time to die. No war for Snake.

The trailer also shows Snake wearing a few variations on his sneaking suit. In one sequence he's concealed within a cloak, and we also get to see him using his new active camouflage, which lets him blend right in with his surroundings as the light refracts around him. Previous MGS games have included stealth camouflage as an unlockable bonus, but it seems to figure more prominently into the gameplay this time.

At the seeming end of the trailer, Snake mercifully holds his fire as one of the last enemy troopers flees for his life. The Metal Gear Solid 4 logo and credits appear...and then a brief epilogue sequence ensues, showing a masked man with Snake's "solid eye system" eyepatch standing in a clearing with a statue in the background, while a few guards lurk nearby. The man evades the guards by blending in with the statue by grabbing onto its, uh...anyway, the guards just walk right on by. The man unmasks as a bird on the statue takes a bit of a poop, and we see none other than the spitting image of a young Solid Snake, sans headband, and he lights up a cigarette just as Snake would. Then another bird poops on him, and he scowls. The end. Huh...? Certainly there's no easy explanation for what a young version of Snake may be doing here. The sequence doesn't appear to be a flashback or anything like that.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots won't be shipping until sometime next year, and one can only hope that it'll wind up looking as good as this latest trailer lets on. While the trailer seems to go out of its way to show sequences that might actually occur during gameplay, we'll believe it when we play it. Needless to say, we can't wait to see more of this increasingly impressive-looking game.

I've been a metal gear fan for a while now, and will definitely be anticipating MGS4. Amazing action and beautiful graphics. Oh yeah, and you need to play through it three times to understand the plot.

I think the young snake is a disguise, but that is just my opinion I don't even try to guess what Hideo Kojima has in store for us. All I know is that I will be laughing at 360 fanboys when i play this game.

hes a clone therfore he ages quicker(dolly the sheep)? + fox die is finally kicking in it seems. regards to the end of the last trailer u see a small bit of grey hair just before a "younger" snake is shown. its just Hideo pulling ur legs...

Some very interesting moves. But the unanswered question is will we be able to finally pilot a Metal Gear?

i never usually buy mgs but seeming as there is no other games out for ps3 i may aswell get it.

Actually, Has anyone thought the young snake is another clone? Y'know, if Metal Gear Ac!d 2 is pulled into canonicity, there are two Snakes, one being a clone of the clone, and being made later (although speed-aged) would make him younger than the current one as he's still fresh and not decaying like Old snake. Or someone else made a clone of snake for an effective soldier, and Old snake might have to fight him.

i have say that i absolutely hate MGS , but this one just might chance my mind.

Metal gear solid has been known for its incredible and consistent calibur of quality. Even metal gear Ac!d (although many people do not like it) was a great and intuitive game. The Metal Gear series never seems to fail or let down and let us hope that guns of patriots will be the same. Metal Gear?!

'if Solid Snake is indeed Old Snake, Meryl Silverburg would look like an old hag instead of a young beauty of a FOXHOUND unit. 3.)Raiden should also age and look somewhat at least as old as Old Snake, same goes with Otacon' Actually ekisom you're wrong. It was made clear towards the end of MGS for the Playstation way back in 1998 that Solid Snake had been 'infected' with foxdie by Naomi Hunter since she blamed him for the 'death' of her apparent brother, Frank Jaeger (Cyborg Ninja). One of the many fatal symptoms of Foxdie is an accelerated ageing process, pair with that the fact that Les Enfant Terribles project did not begin until after Big Boss' death and you have a severe genetic problem, since cloning shows accelerated growth in reality. So as interesting as your theory is regarding the Snake in MGS4 being Big Boss its not entirely true that the characters from previous games would also have aged significantly.

ekisom
ekisom

It could be quite logical for the main character in MGS4 to be BigBoss himself, a lot of the content within the trailers suggests consistencies between Old Snake, BigBoss(naked snake). From what i have read and understood i shall enumerate as much consistencies and inconsistencies as i have seen them. After which it would become speculative to assume that Old Snake in MGS4 is Solid Snake. To add the fact that Kojima Productions has a history of misleading their audience with trailers like what they did with MGS2: Sons of Liberty, only to find themselves playing a raiden character after purchasing the actual MGS2 game. Consistencies: 1.) BigBoss would be quite closer to the age of Revolver Ocelot (MGS4 Liquid Ocelot) who is quite old comparable to old snake in MGS4 trailer. 2.) if Solid Snake is indeed Old Snake, Meryl Silverburg would look like an old hag instead of a young beauty of a FOXHOUND unit. 3.)Raiden should also age and look somewhat at least as old as Old Snake, same goes with Otacon. 4.) TGS trailer showed a much younger Snake getting crapped by birdies who looks closer to the ages of meryl, otacon, raiden. 5.)E3 TRAILER SHOWS OLD SNAKE SALUTING A PATRIOT'S GRAVE IDENTICAL TO THE ENDING SCENE IN MGS3:SNAKE EATER (The Boss' grave) 6.) Roy Campbell, i could not get enough history/background on him but i assume he's also the same age as BigBoss as evidenced in MPO. Inconsistencies: 1.) BigBoss is dead, i dont recall seeing his body in any of the other series. 2.) His right eye was damaged (couldv been repaired in modern times). 3.)The trailer referred to him as solid snake. 4.) Hideo-chan confirmed it but he's a liar. no punn intended hehehe also, MGS4 seems to be going towards a multiple playable main character direction. 5.) what else? i'm out of inconsistencies. 6.) i'm biased and i want it to be BigBoss, so does Hideo-san, he's too precious to him.

oh yeah D_MISTA.... metal gear solid portable ops... you said..... "If any of you have played MGS portable ops. Elise says that Snakes son will save the world (or something like that) That may be Snakes boy. Like father like son." you are forgetting an important detail.. in mgs portable ops.... you play as BIG BOSS not solid snake..... the 'son' who is refered to is Solid Snake... (one of the sons of big boss).... hence solid snake saves the world.... not his son!?!?!? .... he is the 'son' that elise refers to

solidsnakelegen
solidsnakelegen

HAHAHA!! i think im gonna be sick... you actually think ocelot could be the sorrows son! that would mean that the baby the boss refered to that was snatched away from her in the middle of battle after she gave birth would be ocelot...which is impossible. where the hell did u get that idea from!? secondly... people who dont know this should be shot! in mgs3 u play as big boss (refered to as naked snake) not solid snake.. i think the only possible theory for 'young snake' is as follows in metal gear solid one... naomi says that they revived the DEAD frank yeager but never went into detail about how someone could be brauhgt back from being dead... the metal gear series also contains... a vampier who drinks blood and can survive being shot in the head... a guy who can "comunicate with the spirit world and get info from dead soldiers about battle", a guy who can photosynthesise and the iceing on the cake! LIQUID LIVING INSIDE HIS ARM!!! comon guys!! i think big boss may have been "revived" after snake set him on fire with his lighter and spray in metal gear 2: solid snake the same way grey fox was revived (in an ultimate bs unexplained way) and then lived on in secret!.. in metal gear solid one maybe the pentagon never gave into liquids demands of big boss' remains to fix the genome soldeis was because the never had the remains.. and so they sent in snake.. to infect everyone with fox die so they could collect Metal Gear as a plan bevause they never wanted to admitt that big boss' remains were never obtained. also.. hideo kojima would never have made big boss sooo cool in MGS3 if he wasn't going to be in the next game... why tell us so much of a story of a guy hu is killed by a lighter... if he isnt going to be in the next game......... finishing this off.... big boss in 2015 (around where mgs4 is set) would be like 70ish... which is the old snake... who has never been refered to as solid snake once...the same guy who was standing at the grave of 'the boss' in the trailer... (why would SOLID snake go to visit The Boss' grave) and the young snake we see is infact solid snake. i know you're all thinking .. big boss would be like 100 in mgs4... have you ever considered the fact that when liquid told solid snake in mgs2 that big boss was cloned in his 50's was mayb just liquid trying to play with solid snakes mind.. becasue if in 1972 big boss was 50+ years old.. that would mean that in mgs3 set in 1964 big boss was 42+... an impossiblity.. everyone calls him a "child" in mgs3 and that hes "too young".. in gms3 big boss was no older than 30!... meaning that in 2015.. he would be no more than in his 70s!.. matching the old snake we see running around.. staning by the boss' grave.. never being called solid snake... and the thing about "the eye that got shot out... common this is mgs! with vampiers! maybe when they revived Big Boss they fixed up his eye!.. 'old snake' in mgs4 is big boss... the 'young snake' is "Solid Snake". Cant wait till MGS4 comes out... omg its gonna rock sooooo much ^_^!!!!

Andre-M13

In MGS 3 the main character is Big Boss (Naked Snake). Its set before all the previous MGS games. And in MGS4 the most likely outcome is that this older guy is Solid Snake and not Big Boss.

This game is gonna pwn me, and i wont put it down for a bout a week. But it got a question, in MGS3 is that Big boss or Snake, and in MGS4 is that SNake.

Andre-M13

Been reading through the comments, and im surprised no-one has thought along similar lines to me. I think the young snake clip is simply symbolic. Its been made clear in previous games, that snake only feels alive when fighting and i think that clip was to show that. I mean really, some of these theories are far fetched. Big boss being back and more clones. The government in previous games showed they clearly wanted to hide and get rid of any evidence of the gene experiments. why would they then do more? and liquid did not get big boss's body in MGS. and he would revive him, he made it clear in MGS that he hated big boss. Throughout the trailer they emphasise on showing snake suffering the effects of age. And then end it with youth, just after snake narrowly avoided detection. The only theory left to explore now is that they revived decoy octopus and hes now disguising himself as snake :P

"its just a mask people, Kojima likes to do those kind of stuff." How exactly does one smoke a cigar though a mask (and change facial expressions), It is NOT a mask. Oh, and btw there is a $500 version of the PS3 too, I won't be buying one till the price goes down though.

Uuhhhh. Oh my God I really hope this comes to the 360 :( Don't wana spend $600 on a console even though it is the best game (series) ever. I love Halo but Master Chief has nothing on Solid Snake 'n Big Boss (Love MGS3 :))

In the scene of "young snake", while he has his mask on, you can see his gray hair at the back of the mask...its just a mask people, Kojima likes to do those kind of stuff.

I think the young Snake is a clone of the old Snake... same thing like when he was made out of Big Boss.

Ocelot's The Sorrow's son? You're kidding me? How do you guys know that? Not that i'm doubting you or anything... plus, Clown is a girl. Not a guy. But the young looking Snake, is he Solid Snake? He's missing his Bandana... That could be Big Boss young as his bandana was ripped apart by Null in potable ops... It's all so confusing! By the way, Portable ops is the coolest PSP game for me! That's for sure... I wonder if we'll ever see anyone from MGS3 or MPO? Maybe an old PARA-MEDIC? Who knows?

Winters1MGSfan
Winters1MGSfan

OR... it could be the other way around, with snake being old in the beginning (we found ocelot in the middle east- begin first part of the game) then kiling himself and being recloned into a young Snake(hell yeah!)or he is cured by Naiomi(and he doesnt kill himself?) ive heard this theory in many magazines including the late Official Playstation Magazine

SinfulTorture
SinfulTorture

Ok just a thought here asside from everyone with these theories about what could be happening, but don't you suppose that this footage of 'young snake' could just be part of a prolouge to the game? I mean hell MGS2 started two years before you played as Raiden. Not to mention the fact that when you see Snake saluting the grave stone and the helicopter comes down and Otocan jumps out and he gets inside, Campbell says "we've found him, in the middle east" dont' you think perhaps the first part of the game is looking for Liquid/Ocelot???? But then something happens that causes some time to go by, and Foxdie ages his body more during this 'break/gap' period? I don't see why this couldn't happen just like mgs2. Just a thought though. Whatever Hideo has instore for us, i'm looking forward to it.

Yea I can't believe I missed the whole "ocelot is sorrow's son" Vibe but do you know what this means? Put it this way: Naked Snake (Big Boss) Was a snake because he was taught by boss he was the origonal snake Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake were cloned... so obviously they were snakes. Ocelot is boss's son. Does that make him the FIFTH snake? He seemed a pretty good match for Snake in MGS3... And we all know that only a SNAKE or a BOSS can overcome SNAKE... to be honest... I mean he's THE solid snake... I think demonicrage666's idea is a good one though. But with MGS ANYTHING could happen. I thaught "Vamp" was a bit farfetched. But then we got a ghost in MGS3... Next we could have Zombies for all we know! Anyone who has played metal gear ac!d will know what konami are capable of in tearms of wierd plots... (psychic kids, voodoo dolls, masters of disguises that no-one knows the sex of... ) I haven't played MGS:PO yet but I don't want to ruin the game by finding out the story so maybe I'll know for sure after that. I have to say, old snake being solidus seems interesting... what eye did he lose? Cause if the eyepatch is on the wrong side for it to be big boss... (which is almost impossible for it to be) then if it's on the correct side, there's a chance it's solidus and Konami will pull another "All trailers show snake but ingame you play as raidan" type scenario.

Wveth

*SPOILERS* About Liquid Snake/Ocelot... I'm pretty sure Liquid's taking over has little to do with nanomachines, and everything to do with the fact that Ocelot is the son of The Sorrow. I'm sure some of his powers have been passed into Ocelot. Maybe they've never showed themselves, but having part of a dead man's body attached to you... when it comes to communicating with the dead, I'm sure that's some powerful voodoo.

Maybe is another exercise (like MGS2), all the videos and the story almost the same or looklike MSX2 for gameboy. The place is almost like Galzburg, South Africa, the character is same as, Old snake as grey fox New snake?? as solid snake Liquid ocelot as Big Boss "Small metal gear" as "Metal Gear TX-55" and the "PMC" as "Outer Heaven", Raiden probably as unknown factor like snake enter big shell in MGS2.

Ah-hhh... The Sons Of Liberty are born... This is the culmination of the entire story, so don't be surprized if not only do we get one surprise; but three. Yes... You have the Snake that's being shown and of course the Snake at the end of the trailer. What if and I say what if this game is the reunion of the sons of the boss. At the end of Sons of Liberty we see Liquid reborn within Ocelot, Solid Snake Survives and of course we see Solidus. What If Solidus did'nt die. Indeed we do not see Solidus die. He falls but at no moment do we see him expire a last breath ( and besides how many times have we seen Solid Snake get thrown around and take these deadly falls but still make it. ) What if in reality it's solidus were looking at and foxdie is really killing him off. You say no way... But have you ever considered this fact... BIG BOSS!!! Who is it really that has been talking to ocelot at the end of MGS2. Recent reports by Kojima have stated that MGS-P.O. story has very much to do with the plot of MGS4. You Have Old Snake, Young Snake, Liquid Snake posessing Ocelot, it would only make sense that if young snake is really Solid; then Old Snake must be either Solidus or Big Boss himself. Did Big Boss really die at the hands of Solid Snake. Was the genome Project successful after all. Why should PMC'S pay for or employ soldiers when they can create their own ( sounds familiar ). We could speculate all we want but only Hideo knows the fate of the saga. One More Thing it could be... The Stealth Camo... I can't wait to find out.

U guys got it all wrong man. The truth is that the young solid snake will be back but not in the main game. I'm quite sure it's a character for your disposal in the multiplayer feature for MGS4. Does anyone remember Kojima-san MGS3 Subsistence. It's a platform for him to try out the multiplayer in MGS series. Well, this time around there's a multiplayer where most if not all characters will be back especially in MGS multiplayer feature. I'm certain where the story of MGS series are heading. Solid Snake will eventually be the Big Boss. He will be killed through the very end and the person suceeding him will be Raiden. Over the course of the game Raiden will be transform slowly and unconciously following the footsteps of Solid Snake. As for Liquid Snake,..he will emerge from the Ocelot's form through liquid's remaining nanomachines inside his hand when it was transplant over to Ocelot during MGS2. Those advance nanomachines carry most of the database memory re-collections and DNA of Liquid Snake. I know it's a bit far-fetched but trust me,..this is what Kojima-san has under his sleeves. There will be the end of MGS but the cycle of WAR will not end while human still exist. Hence,..."No beginning, no end" as shown in TGS trailer. At the very end, the story will reveal a lot of the characters backstory including the villains. There won't be a defining line to draw between good and evil. Every character behave the way they behave for a reason. Every reason dictates their outcomes and fates. Hence,.."No virtue, no vice" I may wanna elaborate more on the story but that will be a great spoiler! Anyone interested, please let me know. Cheers

It might be snake...though supposedly he has foxdie...he also has those tiny robots in him for the codec system...plus naomi seems to be on his side this time...and dont I recall Kojima saying that snake will not die?...annyway...maybe he cant cloack with the bandana...or maybe he lost or gave it to someone...or maybe its another cole???...who knows...its kojima that only knows whats realy going on...that man is "GOD"

Am i the only one here that doesn't think that "young snake" looks like snake at all?? It might have a lot to do with the fact that his bandana is missing, but still, he looks calm, maybe depressed, kinda "old" (maybe it's just a mask?) and not aggressive, wild and supersoldier-like like he does in the earlier games. Also, his face is a bit rounder, so if that is the closest resemblence to solid from mgs1\2 they can create with the ps3, then i must say im a wee bit dissapointed

Have you guys forgotten the earlier trailers!! Snake has FOXDIE. Naomi Hunter said this and I quot "Your entire body is begining to decay...Six months. You've got six months to live." So that is that. I not sure about the "young snake" The mask thing sounds good becuase for proof for that, watch the newest trailer #6 39 seconds into it his face is bloody looking like he is dead to the metal gears, but when he stands up it "magicly" goes away. So the camo with out the face thing sounds good but I do not see the gary hair that everyone is talking about. At 5 min 11sec.. yup you see the gray hair. Right when he turns to look at the bird, if you puase it right you can see it. Plus, his hands do not take off his head camo and you can hear the camo change. So it has to be solid snake and no other.
