Tetris "Origins" Movie Being Developed

While most modern video game adaptations are based on hugely popular modern titles such as Assassin's Creed, Warcraft, or Tomb Raider, there is of course a wealth of classic gaming yet to be adapted. One of the titles that has been mooted for a movie version for some years is Tetris, with reports last year that a sci-fi feature based on the property was being developed. However, it seems like another Tetris film is also in the pipeline, that takes a very different approach.

According to The Tracking Board, X-Men 3 and Rush Hour director Brett Ratner and his producing partner James Packer are developing a movie that will focus upon the origins of Tetris itself. The film would look at Russian developer Alexey Pajitnov, and his creation of the legendary block-based game during the Communist Soviet Union of the mid-1980s.

In particular, it is reported that the movie would be a Social Network-style examination of the various legal battles that occurred as the game became increasingly popular across the world.

Last year, it was reported that Tetris was being adapted into an "epic sci-fi movie." According to Tetris Company managing director Henk Rogers, the film would use the game's format to bring a "spectacular new Tetris universe to the big screen." To date, there has been no further news about the status of this project.

Tetris remains the best-selling video game of all time, with more than 100 million recorded purchases and downloads.
