Besides playing PlayStation 3 games and other forms of media, PlayStation 3's powerful Cell processor is currently being used to help cure a variety of diseases. Now, it will also help a variety of heart rates in arcades, according to a Reuters report out of Asia.

The news service says that Namco Bandai has struck a deal with Sony to build arcade devices that use the Cell processor. It will apparently be the first time the powerful chip has been used in a device other than the PS3, even though Sony had planned to release workstations using the device by the end of 2006.

A subsequent report in the Mainichi Daily News says that the first game to use the Cell-based arcade board will be Tekken 6. The game is due out in Japanese arcades and on PS3s on both sides of the Pacific later this year.

The graphics aren't exactly spectacular, I can barely tell the difference between this and a ps2 game in some bits.

They need to start putting the cell in more devices, and come out with more then one version of them. How about mini cell processors to put in the highest end iPhone quality Sony Ericsson phone? Or how about getting ready for the next PSP with a sized down version of the Cell processor? Or putting that type of chip in the next Pocket PC? Or how about the obvious: put them in computers.

Heh, I hope this does get ported to 360, purely so they too can start feeling the pain of shoddy half-done ports.

As long as ps3 has its ace's tekken 6 and metal gear 4 halo is still not enough!

Glad to see a publisher trying to revive life in arcades. Wonder if it's gonna come stateside. And have they released a Tekken game on a console other than sony yet? I remember they had the bleemcast that could let you play Tekken 3 on the Dreamcast. But a Tekken game made for another console? I really don't see that happening. At least the 360 is getting Ace Combat!

sorry to bust ur ball$ DarkVenom, but no it's not. maxconsole got the news from a very important source confirming that sega's virtua fighter 5 will be released for the 360, bam there it is in announcements 2 weeks later. the same exact source just confirmed that tekken 6 is being ported to 360 along with Metal gear solid 4. Take that Sony! and guess what, creator of MGS series CONFIRMED that mgs will be on 360 along with exclusive levels and content that ps3 doesn't and can't get.

Honestly, guys, this is nothing new. Tekken has always run on Playstation hardware in arcades. Always. Even the very first game ran on hardware that was nearly identical to the PS1. T:Tag, T4 and T5 all ran on PS2 hardware ( Why do you think T5 looked damn near identical to the arcade version, lol. ) And to the person saying they can play it in the arcades: True, you could...but there would still be features in the console version ( As always ) that the arcades don't get. Such as story segments, and mini games. And who knows, they may put Tekkens 1-5 on the same disc as T6 ( Similar to what they did with the home version of Tekken 5, having the arcade versions of Tekken 1, 2 and 3 on the disc ) God knows they have the room, hehe.

It's possible they'll make a Tekken 6 Arcade version. Surely =]

Well, I only hope that Tekken 6 will come to the 360 as well despite this news. I just don't really see a need to buy an overpriced PS3, I'm not done with my PS2 yet, and I hate to say it, but although I loved the fact that the X-box had more hardware power last-gen, that really didn't stop me from playing the PS2 way more than I ever did the X-box even though I was an X-box fanboy. That's because the PS2 had all the great games, Halo and Knights of the Old Republic aside and such aside. This time around, I can't justify the high price of the PS3 given how great the X-box 360 is, even with its marginally inferior hardware power, and especially considering how many great games I simply won't be able to get on the PS3 it has, and also given how high the installed userbase of the 360 is and how "excluseive" games keep porting over for this reason. Since I like Tekken more than Virtua Fighter (for the style and panache of the characters/storyline/presentation) I -really- hope it does come for the 360 at some point though, despite Sony's relationship with Namco. Financially speaking, it'd really be the best move for Namco, and I have a gut feeling that Namco is beginning to see this.

@blue_tape Hell no. IBM and Toshiba are using Cell as well. Cell was designed for more than just powering a game system; servers, home electronics, etc. The more Cell gets made, sold and used the cheaper it will become, also. Also, Namco and Sony have had this little arrangement going since the original Tekken and Playstation. This is nothing new for either company.

blue_tape

Is this because they have more Cell processors than PS3s, and they can't move the processors by putting them in the sales-underwhelming PS3?

@coolasj19 "this means that all those quaters u use at tekken cause u stink will go in part to sony" So? Besides, Namco pays what they owe Sony upfront. Namco makes their money back when arcade operators buy the game. The arcade owners make their money back when you play. So really, Sony doesn't see any of your quarters - they get paid early on by Namco when Namco makes the machines.

Xbot fanboy, please! First the "Choice" campaign, we give consumer a choice between Blue-Ray and HD, act like an anti-trust angel. Now is the multi-platform campaign, every Sony exclusive should be multi platform cause is "fair", every gamer have a good time. I am in for it, make Halo3 multi platform otherwise is just lip service. P.S multi platform include platform other than M$ Windows OS and Xbox, Xbox360.

@stoner02 Is not 7 cpu, it is SPU. The different between multicore cpu and 7 spu cpu is low level. For example 3 core cpu is not 3 times than powerful than single core cpu because of overhead. It is only 2.5 more powerful than singe core. Cellchip is 7spu cpu, low level programming, 1 low level instruction can have 7 operations in the same time. It is common for a single program to run million of instruction to complete a task. Each Cellship instruction could run 2X-4X speed faster than Intel CPU depend on the algorithm and time that a million time. It is freaking fast.

Tekken 6 = yummy, but I don't think this in any way guarantees that it will be PS3 exclusive. It very well might be, but this probably won't be the reason why. With the differences in the consoles out now (PS3, WII, 360) I'm guessing exclusives will be getting more and more common. It usually produces much better games, because they can be designed for that specific console rather than dropping back to the "lowest common denominator" so to speak. Oh and, "Sony is losing important exclusives, while 360 holds on to the crown jewel of gaming.......HALO" Crown jewel of gaming? Does anyone else think that Halo is one of the most over-rated game series ever created. Maybe that's just me. I'm not saying it sucks, just over-rated.

@JustQuest "I never new a day would come that we would be using the same hardware arcade machines uses." Old news, actually. Tekken's 1-TTT used PSOne hardware, Tekkens 4-5 used PS2 hardware. Sega released a good number of games on Saturn hardware in the arcade, and anytime you see a game that says NAOMI or Atomiswave, that's Dreamcast hardware. @xElite_GameRx "Anyone know if this game will be online?" Nothing's been said yet. However, given that Tekken can be incredibly technical, it might face the same obstacles that VF5 had that prevented it from going online unless they do the same as Tecmo and rework the entire game engine for online play. Given how badly the fighting community (arcade and console - their core market) can punish publishers for straying too far off from what they're used to? Hope, but don't bet for it.

@mysticcarnege "Final Fantasy and Mario are MUUCCCHHH bigger franchises than Halo and none of them are on the XBOX360" Keep in mind that both franchises are also significantly older than Halo, have been on more systems than Halo due to multiple versions being made, and appeal to different groups than Halo. Considering all that, Halo 1 and 2 selling over 12 million copies worldwide is quite an achievement (5 and 7 million, respectively). When you consider the original Xbox sold around 24 million, that's around 20% and 30% of all Xbox owners having copies. Final Fantasy X sold around 2.7+ million copies in America according to VGCharts.org, so lets at least triple that for worldwide - 9 million is a nice number. But that was on the PS2, which has sold over 100 million systems world wide... Final Fantasy is a great series with a long, rich heritage. That said, Halo resonated very well with Xbox players, and I'd bet money would've sold much better had it been on the PS2. Don't discount it out of hand. And answer this? Why wasn't Tekken 4 as well received by Tekken fans as Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament were? Why was VF3, dispite all the innovations it brought, considered the weak link in the series? I've got friends who refuse to admit FFVIII and FFXI are real Final Fantasy games.... these things happen.

That is pretty cool, putting cell processors into arcade games. And as for exclusivity, you can count on Tekken staying with Sony - it's one of the exclusive exclusives, one of the Playstation untouchables
