Tank Wars Hands-On

We sit down with Mobliss for this hands-on preview of Tank Wars.

Comments

Tank Wars is a mobile take on games like Cannon Fodder and Scorched Earth. The game pits you against a computer-controlled or human opponent and tests your relative spatial skills. We were only able to play against an AI opponent, but we were reasonably challenged and were impressed with the game's stylish look on the LG VX7000.

Each Tank Wars map is home to two vehicles and features a destructible landscape. Using a variety of weapons, you'll have to blow through your obstacles and fire at your enemy. Deciding on the right trajectory and power at which to fire is the principal challenge. Even if you miss a shot, the game will save the power level and the angle at which you launched your projectile, letting you adjust as appropriate.

During our session with the game, we encountered environments varying thematically from a futuristic space base to ancient Egyptian ruins. Tank Wars' graphics are cartoonish, and its weapons don't look particularly threatening. That's not to say its confrontations aren't tense or engaging, however. On the contrary, diminishing health bars often correlate to quickening heart rates.

What excites us most about Tank Wars is the prospect of online play, which is a feature that apparently wasn't quite ready for prime time when we played. Playing against the CPU was fun, but it lacked the satisfaction crushing a human opponent would almost certainly yield. If Mobliss can pull off a decent GPRS multiplayer version of this classic game, we'll all be in for a treat.
