Tales of Symphonia getting a PlayStation 3 HD remake - Report

Wii-exclusive follow-up Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World also rumoured to be included.

GameCube RPG Tales of Symphonia could be getting an HD re-release on PlayStation 3, a new report claims.

Its Wii-exclusive follow up Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World is also reported to be included, with the PlayStation 3 game being packaged as the Tales of Symphonia: Perfect Edition.

Hideo Baba, manager of the Tales series, told Spanish website Koi-Nya the two-game collection would be "a representation of the dreams and hopes of the fans, who have long been wanting it" but would offer no addional details.

GameSpot awarded Tales of Symphonia an 8.8 upon its original release in 2004. "Fans of Japanese role-playing games will take to its style and the depth of its battle system, and those curious about the genre and who loathe the idea of turn-based battle and scads of random encounters will appreciate the quick fighting pace. While the story may rely a bit too much on cliché, the ride is still worthwhile. If you have a GameCube and like RPGs, you definitely need to check out Tales of Symphonia," said the GameSpot review.

GameSpot has approached Namco Bandai for comment.

I'm still waiting for Skies of Arcadia HD. Will that ever happen?

Hopefully true, and please come to the US. I already have the orginals but will gladly buy them again.

YES, please! I want more Tales games released here, in the EU, on consoles that I actually have! Please, please, please make this happen! T_T

I hope they do an English release of Tales of Rebirth. I know it's only 10 years late... It's the most gorgeous game in the series IMO.

The problem with JRPGs is they ran out of good stories and had to recycle cliches. They just can't seem to make a story that doesn't involve saving the world of some sort, and the protagonist being some reluctant 17 year old kid who's socially awkward or had psychological issues.. or amnesia.

Until Japan comes up with new ideas they will stay irrelevant to the outside world.

And here I thought they just forgot that garbage didn't exist.

Guess they're low on cash again. May as well release on a system that has a larger, and not dead, player base. Heck, if they improve it and bring it up to Xilia's levels of detail you can bet your arse I'll buy it again! Just add more scenes and dialogue for that 'cheerful' little 'kitty' and you got yourself a temporary forgiveness card! <3

Also, where the hell is Tales of Vesperia legally coming to the states? And for that matter, it took you *this* long to decide to let us have a Xilia port? And that isn't till the end of this year! You better start planning on an HD PS4 remake of part 2 by the time you announce the US release... geez.

Symphonia is one of the better Tales game.....I personally find it a lot better than Abyss....My favorite is oddly Legendia which many people hated...I think it did the best job with character development though even with it's less exciting combat system

As much as I loved Symphonia, I think more fans would prefer to have Tales of Vesperia on the PS3.

The first game was great but the second game? it was just bad characters and bad story through and through

Nice to see all the excitement over this one.  It was a great title back when it was originally released, and I can't wait to play it again in it's remastered form.  I wonder if it's a bit too much to hope for as a Vita release as well someday.  I could use a nice rpg for the handheld....

Good thing my best friend decided to give me his old PS3 yesterday.

why does the tales series always go to Sony lately.  Show the rest of us some love!  Oh well, I played both the original versions of the two games.  Epic!

WHY NO XBOX? Dx

Looks like I have to invest in a ps3.

This is cool. I even look forward to seeing the cover. I think Tales games have some of the best cover art.

Nice; I heard about these games but never got a chance to play them. I may give this one a shot.

This would be freaking awesome! I'd love to no longer have to dust off the Gamecube to play this awesome game. I never played the Wii sequel, so adding on top of rereleasing the original is even more awesome. The sequel is the only Tales game I don't own at present.

Tales of Xillia coming in August and now maybe Symphonia HD.  Oh wow I'm so happy right now.

I hope this rumor becomes true. I would love to re-record my boss battles in Symphonia in HD now that I have an HD capture card. Also, this could mean we might get the improvements made to Symphonia for the PS2 version (mystic artes for characters that didn't have one and the needed camera fix for multiplayer)

ToS was my first exposure to the Tales series, and I still remember it very fondly.  I think I actually ended up liking Vesperia even better, but Symphonia is definitely second.

I actually still have a Gamecube and still own the original game, but I will probably end up buying a copy just to keep encouraging them to bring these games over.  Can't wait for Tales of Xillia, BTW, still another three months before we get that one.

They have lots of games not in the cookie cutter build but they aren't the big dollar games and lot's don't make it over cause Japan loves the cookie cutter games.

Try Disgaea and be a Demon Lord that needs to be more evil and kill the hero.

Or Lost Odyssey and be a grizzled old man who can't die and wants to know why.

Eternal Sonata be Chopin the great pianist on his death bed and drift between reality and fantasy.

Or Front Mission find your lost sister or investigate Germany in giant mechs.

They are out there you just have to look (I'd put Xeno Saga up there too but it would take 3 pages to explain the plot just think the Bible meets Star Wars and Ghost Busters).

@lostn It's not just JRPGs that suffer from this. I've been a silent protagonist prophesized to save the world by running errands for everyone and their grandmother in far too many Western RPGs. While 98% of JRPGs follow the story of the teenage amnesiac who saves the world with mysterious past and powers, the few original JRPGs that make it to this side of the globe are far more creative than what developers are churning out here. Personally, I think the genre as a whole needs a huge injection of creativity. With what current and next gen consoles are capable of, there's so much possibility for truly unique and immersive worlds and characters that just weren't possible before. It seems that once technology caught up to the genre's potential, developer's creativity shrunk.

@uglypinkmoose  I also expected to be dissapointed with Legendia, but Senel Coolidge was such a badass even gameplay wise that the game hooked me anyway. He does not use a sword, and he really kicks the enemies when they're down. Few thing were more cool than his grapples :P

@SavoyPrime Vesperia actually is it just never left Japan.....I feel like a rerelease of Symphonia is better in case people missed out on it....theres a higher chance of playing Vesperia on a 360 than getting a gamecube and finding it available for that...but overall your probably right as many people aren't interested in older games.

Gurzociurlo

@Nzilla Agreed, the Wii has only got Symphonia 2 and Graces, both below average, and the PS3 is going to get Xillia, which looks awesome.

@shadow_Metroid Lol, I remember back then, when the X-Box fanboys would make fun of the ps3 users because they didn't had almost any game back then...

Oh, the irony...

@shadow_Metroid "Looks like I have to invest in a ps3."

Don't bother. It's on its last legs. Just wait till they re-release all of these on PS4...

You got Vesperia.

kiramasaki

@shadow_Metroid Dude you should have already been investing in a ps3 for Ni no kuni and NIS games alone. Disgaea is one of the best rpgs series.

@OldKye Xeno Saga does involve saving the universe though, just not by a 17 year old twerp. It just seems to me that without big stakes (like saving the world) they are finding it difficult to justify boss battles. Why do you have to fight this giant thing if it's not to save someone/something?

Nintendo is just as guilty for lack of story creativity btw. Zelda fits the mould perfectly.

roosteraxe1

@uglypinkmoose @SavoyPrime Microsoft payed a bunch of money for exclusivity on Vespiria and several other JRPGs at the time in North America. It was their sad attempt to win people over in Japan. The fact is though, Japan doesn't care as much about FPSs and that's the majority of what the 360 has going for it. As a result, games like Lost Odyssey and ToV won't be getting PS3 ports. At least in the states. I'd definitely repurchase Vespiria for PS3 though. Especially since I hear there's a new character and extra content on the PS3 version (not to mention my 360 is now used solely to play Minecraft and I'm very sick of that game).

kiramasaki
kiramasaki

@uglypinkmoose @SavoyPrime I want both, as do most tales fans. I mean I would like the ps3 version of Vesperia buts its not like the addition of Patty , I think thats the name of the little pirate girl, will change the story much.

@Gurzociurlo @Nzilla

Because there's more of an audience of the "Tales of" series on PS3 than there is for either the Wii, or the Xbox 360.

@Darkefka @lostn @OldKye It is certainly good, I concur. But that game was 1998. I think if they released the exact same story today, it wouldn't have the same effect because it was novel back then but cliche now.

The same goes for FF7.

@lostn @OldKye Xenogears does invole a 17 young uy amnesiac though, and it's still the greates story in any video game I heard of...

@leviathanwing @kiramasaki @shadow_Metroid Suikoden is the best rpg series, there make you happy. How the hell is me having an avatar of a series I consider one of my favorites in any way biasing my opinion? Its not like a work for NIS or anything.
