Take-Two hints at Red Dead Redemption 2

CEO Strauss Zelnick says Western has potential to be "permanent" franchise, like James Bond.

by

During a recent earnings call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick teased a sequel to 2010's critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption, saying he believes the game has the potential to be a "permanent" franchise, similar to the James Bond series.

"It's been our goal not just to preserve and grow the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but also to build other franchises that we think can be permanent, whether that's the Red Dead franchise or the Borderlands franchise or the BioShock franchise or others, Civilization, for example," Zelnick said.

The executive also claimed that Take-Two has a unique approach to building franchises compared to its competitors. In his view, it is smarter to make "permanent" franchises that consumers will continually spend time and money on over the years instead of "making hay while the sun shines."

"Our goal is to try to create permanent franchises, that's the unique goal in the industry. Our competitors do not see it that way. Our competitors' view is that our franchise will have a certain life, and at the end of that life, you move onto the next thing, so you better make hay while the sun shines," Zelnick said. "Our view is to the contrary. The best franchises are permanent franchises. Outside of our business you can look at James Bond, for example."

Red Dead Redemption was released in May 2010 to nearly universal praise. The game was developed primarily by Rockstar San Diego and is a spiritual successor to 2004's Red Dead Revolver, which Rockstar Games purchased from Capcom in 2002 after its cancellation.

If the Red Dead Redemption franchise is to return, it could be one of the multiple next-generation games Take-Two currently has in development. In May, CEO Strauss Zelnick said, "We also have a extraordinary pipeline of titles in development for next-generation platforms, including groundbreaking new intellectual property and releases from our proven franchises."

Red Dead Restocker

Marston's son goes broke and is forced to work for Wal-Mart as a stocker, where he learns the true meaning of Christmas.

This pisses me off. Did everyone forget about Red Dead REVOLVER??? Its like the same shit when COD 4 came out, and the next game they called modern warfare 2??? WHY? Try to make it like its a new series or something. It then confuses people and the dumb ass people, who are mostly kids think of MW2 when you say something like "Did you ever play COD2". This is the 3rd Read Dead, so make a new name for the game instead of stupid boring shit like Read Dead Redemption 2.

I just finished my second playthrough of Red Dead Redemption a few days ago. It's still as good as when I first played it three years ago.

I'm going to play through Undead Nightmare again over the Halloween period.

RDR is a true classic. It would be crazy not to make another one.

As long as they aren't being pumped out at the rate of one game per year (The ACs aren't bad, but I haven't played the last two still for a reason), I'm on board. I think Rockstar and (shoot me, they still make good games) Bioware made the best games this console gen overall.

Bioware is heading into Ubi territory, but Rockstar has retained some integrity yet for actually producing innovative works.

It would be cool if you could buy your own land, build your own house and raise a family.

This company understands the industry too well, obviously there is always time for one hitters but if you want to create a staple franchise, it takes years of development and love put into it to really make it stand out

I hope any sequel isn't like an AC sequel where some weapons get swapped out you change outfits and play the same style of missions as in the first game. But I like Rockerstar / Take Two as they have a great track record in the games of theirs that I have played.

I just hope isn't Redemption 2. I don't want to pay with another good guy. Something like Red Dead Renegades would be better.

My money is on Red Dead Retribution although it does have a slightly clunky sound to it.

Didn't really care for how RDR ended, but it was a great game. I'd love to get my hands on a sequel.

Red Dead Rsomething or I cancel my preorder! All the dumb speculation on the letter R would be crushed if it was simply Red Dead Redemption 2.

Now really, this is great news to me. I wish for singleplayer posses ala The Warriors, and actual stealth this time ^_^

This would be amazing, it takes years of consistently good installments to become permanent though, Zelda's a good example...

Well if Rockstar don't want to do the next one they can always get Gearbox to do it, lol

Now this is wise marketing. Take Two is definitely one of, if not THE best publishing company we currently have in the industry.

@JasPlun Could you see yourself taking a minute to fire one bullet? Would be cool though to see him have run-ins with Billy the Kid, Jesse James, or Wild Bill. Famous outlaws and have him do missions with them. Or take part in famous shoot outs like at the OK Corral.

@JasPlun

Wouldn't have been alive yet. I doubt the any future 'Red Dead' games are going to necessarily involve the Marston clan. I think it'll be much like the 'Grand Theft Auto' series, with new characters each game.
