Take-Two confirms 2K Marin

Publisher acknowledges new California studio rumored to be working on BioShock 2, says it is focused on building new brands.

by

Last month, a job listing and a blog post from rumor hound Surfer Girl got gamers buzzing about a supposed BioShock 2. The job listing mentioned that a group of developers from the original BioShock were setting up a new studio in the San Francisco area called 2K Marin, which the Surfer Girl post tied to the next installment in the submersible first-person shooter.

Take-Two wouldn't comment on the rumor at the time, but today the publisher shed a little light on the matter with the official announcement of 2K Marin, which will be based in Novato, California. Although the studio will codevelop games with other 2K studios around the world (much as 2K Boston worked with 2K Australia on the original BioShock), 2K Marin was specifically established to develop original intellectual property.

"We're focused on continuing to bring new brands and cutting-edge gameplay to market with the creation of the 2K Marin studio," 2K president Christoph Hartmann said in a statement. "2K Marin will build upon our success in creating and leveraging AAA franchises."

Hey! i got an idea that might work. WOULD YOU KINDLY not make this movie?

Video games and movies don't mix. I seriously doubt this is going to be any good. Games such as doom, house of the dead, resident evil, all had crappy movies. I'm a huge bioshock fan, i have all the achievements on xbox 360, but i wouldn't get my hopes up for this.

this should be awsome, they should start to make a movie like they did with halo.

Bioshock is better than system shock ever was.

i'd rather see Irrational (or 2K Boston now) work on System Shock 3 instead of X-Com and not have anyone work on BioShock 2 for now

they should make a Bioshock 2... make it into a franchise... the game won VGA of the year on Spike TV

Bioshock 2 sounds great. Imagine an underwater multiplayer too....

I predict a prequel. The ending to Bioshock made a sequel a bit, well, unlikely.

Yeah well thats nice. We know that they are going to make a Bioshock 2 but this does not specify anything regarding Bioshock. ...And hopefully they make the next game better.

Bioshock was awesome, but there's definitely room for improvement. I hope they don't give up on the series but I also hope for a new plot, Bioshock's feeling of closure is much too big for a sequel in the same storyline. I looked through that artwork book they gave away for free and there is a lot of monster-like characters that were never used. Using them in a new game would be cool, although it saddens me to think I'll never see a Big Daddy in another game again.

Bioshock IS System Shock all tech stuff have been changed to steam powered or otherwise oldtype tech. Go to http://www.escapistmagazine.com/ and look up Zero Punctuation and the Bioshock review. He says it best.

Best idea is to start something new. BioShock was great but borrowed a lot from Sys Shock 2. It'd be nice to see something completely fresh from this team :)

I remember during the last E3 the developers says they're making it a sequel game and the game could be the game of the year so why not making it a sequel

I think they're gonna do what they're gonna do, and about a third of us are going to buy it anyway.

BigDaddy973: "Bioshock in a space-station" was already made. Two great games, System Shock and System Shock 2, will scratch that space itch.

Novato is kinda close to Petaluma. . . about 17 minutes close. Still, not far from Lucas ranch. That could very well be a strategic business decision that helps 2K Marin ramp up with some serious talent. Of course, they could also be drawing head count from their testing station in the North Bay.

why is everyone saying that they want it to be X360 exclusive? Its not like it will hurt the 360 at all since the first bioshock was built for the 360 so it wont get a port since they have the basics for it already. If you want it for the 360 then buy it for that system and if you want it for the PS3 then buy that. Mulfi platform games when done right(no bad ports or low budget games) are just good for everyone. Its not like it helped Full Auto 1 and 2 by going exlusive for on or the other. Bad games are bad games and good games are good where ever it comes out. And some multi platform games are just bad to begin whit.

Doesn't say anything about Bioshock 2 being made, but it wouldn't surprise me seeing how well it did. It's good that they're focusing on creating new brands, though.

New IP's are good *yes im looking at you Nintendo, now make/announce some already*. But Homerj, if they re-built Bioshock from the ground up they wouldn't have to reduce visual quality. 360-built games generally port so badly onto the PS3 because the PS3 sets aside 60-or-so MB of RAM for the operating system as oppposed to the 360's set block of 512 RAM (both systems have the same amount) so they have to fiddle things around so they can get the games to run on 60-or-so MB of ram less.

Maybe I am reading this wrong... but it does not say anything about BioShock 2. Instead it says the studio will be making NEW games... please if I am reading this wrong please explain it to me.

"Maybe a PS3 port of the first game ?" Why would 2K spend another year re-developing Bioshock? They would have to remake from the ground up, and drastically reduce the visual quality just to get it to barely acceptable framerates, and for what? 50 or 60K copies? Not worth it from a business sense unless Sony ponies up a pre-release revenue package equaling out to at least 500K copies.

Going back to Rapture would be cool, but if they can make a new IP that's as creative and inventive, good for them.

Without Ken Levine steering the ship, this game's gonna have an entirely different, and most likely, hollow feeling to it. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the team is great, but any "worth while" product has to have a visionary helming the endeavor.
