Tabula Rasa preorders get bonus

NCsoft announces an online deal available starting tomorrow; will give gamers beta access at the time of purchase and a three-day head start on the game's official launch.

Richard Garriott's massively multiplayer online role-playing game Tabula Rasa may not be launching until October, but gamers can buy the pre-order pack of the PC game now--some three months before its release. The 'Pre-Order Bonus Pack' is available for download from various online retailers in Europe and North America and from the NCsoft online store from August 10.

The pack includes a copy of the game client on DVD--which will allow players access to the beta test of the game, which is currently under way--a three-day head start when the retail version of the game goes live, exclusive in-game pets and emotes, bonus wallpapers, and art.

A boxed copy of the game will arrive on store shelves August 31, for those who prefer their games with cardboard. The game will be officially going online in Q4 in North America and Europe.

Tabula Rasa is the latest creation from games industry veteran Richard Garriott, who grew to fame with the Ultima series of PC RPGs. Garriott's latest breaks with current MMORPG convention by having a sci-fi as opposed to fantasy theme. The developer has said that the game will challenge other online game conventions as well, including respawning monsters, static worlds, and repetitive quests.

Today NCsoft also announced a Platinum Edition for the Guild Wars: Eye of the North expansion, which will include the original game along with the expansion, and is due for release August 31.

Does anyone know what the fee will be? Are we talking $9.99 per month or a yearly flat fee?

Arcanum: Guild Wars works that way because it's graphics aren't the best, and it only needs a few servers since when you go out of town your computer is the server. The reason MMO's require pay-to-play is because of the cost of maintenance for the servers, technicians, game masters and so on.

Arcanum, Guild Wars is not an MMO. That is the difference. Hellgate: London, pn the other hand, is trying to sucker people into paying a monthly fee for little more than what Guild Wars does for free (with the vague promise of "content" being added). Tabula Rasa is a fast-paced, sci-fi game, but it IS an MMO. It is a persistent world game.

I was really looking forward to this game, but since it has a monthly fee, forget it. I'll stick to Guild Wars. NCsoft has proved that the Buy it and play for free model works, its too bad that this game will come with a fee attached.

The beta is kick ass, and the game is a breath of fresh air imo.

Man fees fees and more fees i wouldnt care so much if it was at a deccent price like £40 a year like Xbox Live were u can play any game no extra fees per games and free downloads and stuff. But games like WOW (witch is a great game) coast £97.50 a year! for one game and other paying games like Linegage 2,FF11 and City Of Heros and you have a £400 subscription to pay a year no thx ill just stick to my Xbox 360 games,Live and MMOs like Guild Wars and Dungeon Runners

if you buy the preorder from PlayNC, as soon as your payment is received, you can start downloading from the PlayNC page, inside your account. When you finish it, you can log in and play the beta.

Tabula Rasa is a good game, but I'm against the 'selling' of beta access.

Though I've no desire to get into any MMORPG, this game does sound kind of interesting.

Hmm, I might consider buying that, even if it's just to get into the beta.

Hmmm...anyone have any feedback on the beta since it's apparently under way? I haven't heard anything about it (granted I haven't gone out of my way to look either, though). This might make me take a break from CoH when my subscription goes rogue in September.

I love GW for 1 reason, no fee. Why does every mmo need a fee? I know that it is expensive to have servers. So make the game $80 say no fee, and there u go.

Yea ... was going to say that about the typo :)

That must be a typo - I don't see why they would release the boxed game on August 31 and then wait a full month to let people play. I am imagining it should say September 31, because that would be about 3 days before the game is launched. So if you pre-order you can log in on Sept 31 (at midnight?) and play. I'd like more opinions on if the game is going to be worthwhile or not. It *looks* cool and *sounds* cool, but it would be nice to play the beta. Hm. Dunno if I'll be pre-ordering.

Doomed to fail or at least doomed to not be nearly as successful as other MMO's. It'll be about as successful as City of Heroes, if it's lucky. The game will does sound unique though so I might give it a try.

This is where you pre-order, get the beta key, cancel preorder.

-Too bad one can only keep the levels/stuff from the 3-day head start.

Anyone know when you get into the Beta if you pre order?

anybody know if it's free online like guildwars or is there a fee? if so how much?

StrikerGold

Too bad I won't be able to take advantage of the pre-order head start even if I did get it. Anyway, pre-ordering an MMO, even one as slick as this seems, is akin to putting your hand in a blender with a hyperactive monkey at the controls. Nothing bad may happen, but then again... puree?

The name Richard Garriott brings back fond memories of playing the Ultimas in the eighties and early nineties. I'll definitely get Tabula Rasa, but not sure if I'll pick up the pre-order.

Awesome. Currently in the beta and the game is terrific so far! Really pretty, runs pretty smooth, so far very few buggies that I've seen and the action is sweet so far. So I'll be pre-ordering TR tomorrow!

Get the game early if you preorder. Cool.

So that's why they never sent me a beta invite. Hmmm... it's tempting. But I'll probably wait for the boxed verison to look into it. In either case, I feel obligated to support Richard Garriott, the man who truly made the RPG genre what it is today.

I find it odd that the retail game will be on shelves a month in advance, with a "beta incentive", but whatever. They might aswell say, buy it now and endure a plague of bugs so that we're funded enough to sort them out within a month!
