Surface RT gets price cut

Microsoft implements 30 percent price cut for tablet line; development of rumored smartwatch reportedly shifts from Xbox team to Surface division.

by

As was rumored, Microsoft today announced a 30 percent price drop for its Surface RT tablet line, cutting $150 off each model.

The 32GB entry model is now available for $350. Full pricing information is as follows:

  • Surface RT 32GB - $349.99
  • Surface RT 64GB - $449.99
  • Surface RT 32GB with Touch Cover - $449.99
  • Surface RT 64GB with Touch Cover - $549.99

The price cut comes after a March Bloomberg report claimed the Surface tablet line has underperformed for Microsoft, selling 1.5 million units since launch in October.

Separately, The Verge reports that development on Microsoft's prototype smartwatch has shifted to the company's Surface team. Previously, it was believed that the Xbox accessories division was working on this device.

It is not clear if this rumored shift was a result of Microsoft's recently announced company-wide reorganization.

I hate Windows 8. Really, still using 7. It's good in mobile phones though, have yet to use tab so not sure.

It's cheap now but still I won't pick it unless I am really excited about something in it, I like my IPAD far more then this

Tablets are for toddlers and pensioners, everybody else should use an UltraBook. If you don't agree you have too much spare money and very low requirements.

WTF?, $350 bucks is the price after the $150 AUD price cut?, you are kidding me, now I see why no one gives a sh!t for this thing. Bravo Micro$oft, you've got another "winner" here

Huh, just noticed one model is the price of a Wii U. I find that amusing for some reason.

Kindle fire and Nexus 7 are great tablet at 200 bucks.

Then you have the fact you can get a far superior ultra book for just a little bit more.

To hell with the surface, even after knocking off 150 bucks the lowest end one is still 350 dollars.

No one gives a shit about Surface RT. Cut one with the full Windows 8 shebang and your sales won't be so embarrassing.

I wish it was the Surface Pro getting a price cut.

Still too much, especially when UltraBooks are just 100-200 dollars more....

I prefer having a tablet that behaves like a laptop, over a tablet than behaves like a mobile phone.  These tablets, despite a shortage of some apps, are incredibly useful on the move and their full support of major APIs such as Flash and DirectX is really really cool.  I would like to see MS make a push for a better app store for the next round of Surface tablets.  Otherwise I've always thoroughly enjoyed my RT.  My friend has a Pro and that thing is superb, not bad for gaming!  Runs Skyrim smoothly as long as you're careful a bit on the settings.

Probably a step in the right direction. I was surprised at the prices when they launched.

I don't care if they sell it for a hundred bucks.  If it's going to make me dance around and throw papers everywhere, it's pointless.  That's all I get out of their horrible commercials.  Rather than bothering to let me know why in the world I would pick one over an iPad or a Playbook or any other tablet on the market for that matter, they choose to hint that the device is probably as shallow as the commercials are.

blah blah blah nothing but blind hate and stupidity amongst these gamers on this post. Judging by these posts every platform is a loser. Oh you hypocrites .

Still too expensive.  Get an Android if you want a cheap tablet.  Surface RT is crap.

The only way a company like Microsoft can stay in business with such horrid sales on their products is because the government(NSA) just keeps pumping them unlimited money to make products to spy on people....even if the Surface sells only 100 units Microsoft will still spend billions of unfettered cash on advertising it...same goes for XBOX ONE...unlimited supply of government sponsored money to advertise the spy box.

Does anyone know if they do an e450 or nvidia ion one of these?? that would be perfect and you could do some light pc gaming with older titles. If they are all arm they might as well be running iOS or Android because there are more apps available

Im excited about Win8  tablets. Honestly i see iPad and Android tablets as nothing more than larger screen versions of a phone. And i think Win8 is getting a bad rap b/c it OBVIOUSLY sucks on laptop/desktop

But im going to wait till intel releases their new processor in Q4. Makes owning a Windows 8  tablet for $350 worth it. Current intel atom processors work great. But the new ones run longer and twice the power.

Who freaking doesnt want a full running OS on a tablet anyways?

kritvichu

Correct me if I am wrong. I haven't done any research yet but what I understand, this tablet is based on Windows 8 OS platform. When it means Windows, it will soon later get lots of attraction from virus, worms, spywares, ...etc.

Because of majority of people uses Windows OS, hackers and security breach will get in their way. To tackle this issues, the system will get updated, patched, and lots of stuffs. As a result in the near future, the tablet will be gettting slower and slower to perform like crawling. MS will release new high processing tablet while people with the old one will be facing no choice but to buy a new one like what happened to PC.

This is just solely my opinion. I am a PC user and have an iPad for easy browsing on the go. The reason I still use PC is because I still play computer games and use office application. Besides, it is cheaper when compared to mac. I use VMware to run ubuntu, Fedora, and Mint from time to time, but there are not as good support as PC yet.  I may be a hatre for M$ and I am sorry for that. All I can think of about this big corporation is greedy money, money, and money.

It's been about 9 months since Surface's launch. 1.5 million units is literally abysmal.

Although I love my Surface, I would never pay that much for it. I am ashamed to say it, but the only reason I have one is because it was free. If the keyboard came with it at 350 and 450, that would make sense.

Sad indeed GS...anything flr clicks right?

As a proud owner of both an RT and Surface Pro...I'm very happy with both products, though I have tried to jailbreak my RT so I can install third party software like Itunes and such.

@sargentpsgamer Thing is pure junk, i have tried it and other then that horrendous Windows 8 has nothing to offer. They are paying people to develop apps for it because no one wants it.

Even Nook and Kindle are much better , cheaper.(and win 8  free ..big plus)

Well I have an iPad 4 my bro won in a tournament and after seeing the MS surface tabs I say they look like the better deal. There basically Laptops in a Tablet formfactor they have a full version of Windows 8(I know not the best OS)so basically anything you would do on a computer you can do on one of these.

@jd7904 ion wasn't supported too well.  Problem was they were always paired with an intel atom cpu.  I had a netbook with those and there were only a handful of games it could run decently . For example, it ran portal 2 and HL2 amazingly for a netbook but play a game like Killing Floor with a few AI to calculate and it was unplayable on any settings (same for L4D2).

@kritvichu

Viruses have not been an issue for RT. The virus writers are more likely to target iOS or Android on the ARM side of things.

As for big companies that only want money money money, you have to look no further than Apple. You said it in your own post, Macs are overpriced. At least Microsoft encourages competition inside of its own infrastructure. How many companies are built around Windows?

Besides, unless you are oblivious to the world, every corporation is about maximizing profits. Its why they exist. Microsoft is just one of those companies that people love to hate.

@Marky360 @jinzo9988 If you buy the more expensive version. The "cheap" one is crap, and the keyboard they come with even sucks.

If you want a surface, then get the more expensive one or don't get one at all.

kritvichu
kritvichu

@rolla020980 @kritvichu

Why do you think viruses are not an issue for this tablet? I know a majority of people using iOS and android for tablet, hackers tend to attack on something that spread wide. However, this tablet is still developed under Windows where people with new PC or any upgraded OS for enterprise will use pretty soon. When the core OS architecture is the same, security breach will be an issue. Updated, patches, fixes will make the hardware slow down. That happens to my PC right now. Compared to my ipad, I got the very old one. I upgraded new iOS 2 times. Not show any lag yet.

Anyway, it is not point to argue which one is better. I just don't like M$ is my personal feeling. It doesn't mean I like Apple either. For this M$, I just have a feeling that this company tries to do business in a form of monopoly in a ligitimate way. That is it

lostastsea22485
lostastsea22485

@Elk No there is not an ARM version of ITunes..but the RT OS is exactly the same as Windows 8 except for a security restriction in the registry.  You can jailbreak the RT and it will perform the same as the Surface Pro, abet a little slower of course.

ahztek666
ahztek666

@kungfool69 @ahztek666 @rann89 Yes but I don't think that any of those are as good as the surface pro? I could be wrong because I haven't looked into it but I think the Surface Pro is the winner in the tablet-pc category.

@lostastsea22485 @Elk The RT runs an ARM processor, it is a different architecture and will not run full Windows 8. If you are thinking of the Surface Pro, it has a different CPU.

Elk

@lostastsea22485 The OS is the same but the hardware is different. That processor won't run X86 applications.
