Supreme Commander Profile Preview - Cybran Characters and World

We continue our look at the Cybran Nation with background information on some of the faction's key characters, as well as one of its worlds.

by

The future isn't a pretty place according to Supreme Commander's story. This upcoming real-time strategy game from THQ and developer Gas Powered Games is set a couple of thousand years in the future, at the tail end of a conflict that has lasted so long that it's called the Infinite War. Humanity's galactic-wide empire has split into three warring factions, and you'll be able to lead any one of them. What makes Supreme Commander different from most real-time strategy games, though, is its scale. The battlefields in the game are hundreds, and even thousands, of square kilometers in size, which means you'll have to exercise strategic skill to outmaneuver and defeat your enemy.

Dr. Gustaf Brackman, leader of the Cybran Nation.

Supreme Commander's three factions are the United Earth Federation, the successor to the Earth Empire; the Cybran Nation, a race of cybernetically enhanced humans; and the mysterious Aeon Illuminate. We've already covered the history, characters, and units of the UEF, and we're continuing our look at the Cybran Nation with background information on some of the characters and the homeworld that make up the faction. Supreme Commander is scheduled to ship in 2007.

Cybran Characters and Worlds

Dr. Gustaf Brackman
Leader of the Cybran Nation
Age: 1,304

As we learned in our previous preview, the central figure in Cybran history is Dr. Gustaf Brackman, the cybernetics expert that created the "twining process" that merged an artificial intelligence with a human host. With that breakthrough, cybernetically enhanced humans known as symbionts became possible. Superior to regular human beings, symbionts quickly rose to positions of power throughout the Earth Empire. However, fearing a revolt, the government ordered a secret loyalty program installed in each symbiont. Of course, as the empire crumbled beneath its sheer size, symbiont worlds rebelled and were put down.

Commander Ivanna Dostya, military aide to Brackman.

Though Brackman made his breakthrough in 2592, he's still around 1,300 years later (thanks to some really futuristic technology), and he remains the leader of the Cybran Nation. That's not to say that the UEF hasn't tried to knock him off. However, all assassination efforts have failed, and they only pushed Brackman into becoming an even more determined foe. Brackman's location is unknown, though the Cybrans fled to the outer reaches of known space to escape prosecution. From there, free from the loyalty program, they've flourished, and Brackman continues his battle to free the rest of his cybernetic children.

Ivanna Dostya
Elite Commander
Age: 37

Compared to the ancient Brackman, Ivanna Dostya is a mere 37 years old, but she is one of the elite commanders of the Cybran Nation. She actually used to live on Earth as a subordinate symbiont, kept under control by the secret loyalty program. However, a commando raid rescued her and brought her back to Cybran space. Freed from the loyalty program, she rose through the ranks of the Cybran military with a stellar service record and a reputation for success. Dostya currently serves as Brackman's military aide, a duty that keeps her away from the battlefield.

Minerva is home to a secret Cybran base.

Minerva:
Terrain: Wetlands

In the history of Supreme Commander, humanity colonized hundreds of worlds across the galaxy. (The problem was that Earth tried to exercise control of all those worlds, and that was a major cause of the Infinite War.) Minerva was one of these worlds. However, this promising Earth-like planet turned out to be a nightmare in disguise. Various colonization efforts failed due to destructive weather, an inhospitable and even dangerous ecosystem, and disease. It was so bad that records of the planet were erased and it was forgotten. However, Minerva is now home to a secret Cybran base.

This game will rock. C&C3 will be my biggest priority to get in the new year, but this won't be far behind. What does everyone think of Spore? looks great, but the proof will be in the playing.

i dont think an fx 57 with 2 gig of low cas ram and two 7800 gtx will run it. which is me never mind good excuse to upgrade. biggest RTS to date is EMPIRES DAWN OF THE MODERN WORLD 80000 POPULATION CAP AND THE BIGGEST MAPS SO FAR.

Seeing the gameplay video, for sure you'll need about 2GB of RAM because they're about the same amount of armies moving around as Civilization IV. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with ultra extremely slow framerate. This is bigger than C&C or any RTS so far as the map you're playing is as big as a continent. Like playing many C&C Generals maps at the same time into 1 big ass Supreme commander map: commanding many armies on many battlefields at the same time.

There are very few games I buy when they first come out; because of the prices. This will be one of the few. This is looking to be the end-all-RTS for me for a long while.

This will be a good game if they keep to their guns.

Everytime one of us old-timers see SC printed out we have wonderful flashbacks of starcraft. That game has elicited hundreds of hours from me. This is the only game that I think will come close the the original SC, oh and C&C.

All this excitement for 6 graphs and three hand drawn images. Not until I see something significant will I begin to worry about this thing. Past 1/1/2007 is still in the realm of possible failure into vaporware land

The Cybran will kick some serious a*s with those gigantic walking mech-like, spider-like laser sprayers. Just imagine the enemy noob has a horde of little pee-wees like all other games do. Than you have these 5 things I descibed above come out of a forrest and... .......... *BLAAAAAAHHHHHHHH*! (laser noise) and then 10 seconds later you zoom out and the valley is a scorched wasteland covered in smoldering jet parts and little fires springing up everywhere... THIS GAME IS GOING TO ROCK!

I really hope this RTS meet expectations, Star Wars Empire at War was okay but got boring, RoN:RoL was good but I always end up doing back to RoN. Waiting for some good RTS, been playing alot of TBS games lately because of that( which is just fine though).

This game represents the next generation of Real Time Strategy Warfare. Oh, and I don't think you'll need a physics accelerator. The PhysX just makes more debris effects, slowing down the FPS and nothing else (see GRAW and City of Villains). CPUs are more than capable of physics with a good physics engine like Havok.

Been waiting for this game for the last few years since the rumors of Total Annihilation 2 were roaming the net, just hope its worth the wait, I would hate to think SC fails on gaming or history or on anything after such long wait and time. On the curious side this game should be able to run properly and beautifully on a 6800GT (I cry if it doesn't) :) I also expect at least 100 hours worth of campaign game play and very intensive and lag-less network battling.

Supreme Commander looks like a title that will benefit greatly from physics acceleration. Chris Taylor is on record as being very fond of "little things that explode everywhere in all sorts of tiny, individual pieces." With add-in phys-X cards, multi-cored CPU's, and astonishingly: multiple GPU's designed to enhance visuals with countless pieces parts, I'd be disappointed if SC wasn't designed with those enhancements in mind. Havok has done wonders with a single CPU, will SC raise the bar? Go Chris Go!

I'm looking forward to this game more than any other RTS. Even more than C&C 3, and I'm a huge C&C fan. It's just that something of this magnitude has never been done before.

Supreme commander is going to rock! I am playing Total Annihilation now and I've played it for almost 8-9 years, since I was 8 years old i think, this is a game that is crafted into my mind. To me this isn't a new game, only a sequel to TA but it looks like this is going to smack TA a** It's great that my new pc is delivered in some4-5 weeks. :-D
