Superbike 2000: Kawasaki ZX-7RR

Our coverage of EASports' Superbike 2000 continues with a look at Kawasaki's mean green machine.

Kawasaki's ZX-7RR is the latest evolution in the classic Ninja crotch-rocket lineage, which was first made popular in the '80s by movies like Top Gun. The version in Superbike 2000, the same used in last year's SBK season, boasts nearly three times the horsepower of its street-legal predecessor, and it is a lot easier on the eyes as well. The ZX-7RR has the same lime-green paint job that Kawasaki has been coating its entire line of ZX bikes since the early '90s, and next to the Ducati, is one of the most easily recognizable pair of wheels on the circuit.

At first, the ZX-7RR seems to handle like most of the other bikes in the game, but after careful scrutiny, it becomes obvious that the Kawasaki is a little underpowered. In fact, at only 158hp (achieved at 13,800rpm), the ZX-7RR is the weakest of the bunch, and it fails to perform well on twisty tracks. But despite its low output inline four, this bike has the fastest top speed of the bunch, barely edging out the speedy Honda RC45 at 196mph, making the ZX-7RR a prime candidate for courses defined by their long straights.

Its handling leaves something to be desired, and even though the lack of significant low-end power makes the Kawasaki nearly high-side crash proof, the bike will constantly lose front-wheel traction under moderate braking in tight turns. Its skittish behavior will turn off amateur riders, leaving this bike a ride for veterans only. The ZX-7RR's braking capability can also be filed under D for disappointment, as its Brembo discs consistently fail to decelerate the Kawasaki within acceptable distances.

This bike is no slouch, and with a little finesse and early braking, the Kawasaki becomes a serious contender for the checkered flag. You can test-drive this one yourself when Superbike 2000 ships to stores in a few days. Come back tomorrow, when we'll take Yamaha YZF R7 OW02 out for a spin.
