Super Street Fighter IV Update - Deejay, Juri, and T.Hawk Hands-On

We kick butt with the new additions to the Street Fighter roster in Capcom's upcoming entry in the series.

We got our first peek of Super Street Fighter IV a few weeks ago in Japan but didn't have a chance to get our hands on an arcade stick and bust some heads with the new characters. Since then, we've been harassing Capcom for some hands-on time and our wish was finally granted this week. Capcom reps stopped by our offices with a demo version of the game that--while bare bones in terms of modes and the full roster--let us try out some of the new roster additions.

The version of the game we tried featured several returning characters: Ryu, Guile, and Chun Li. There was also newcomer Juri, as well as returning favorites T.Hawk and Dee Jay. The new returning characters have all gotten the funky 3D-watercolor makeover the rest of the cast received in Street Fighter IV and fit in well. While there were no new stages in our demo, the returning stages in the demo had a number of tweaks to them that included changes to static background elements, the addition of more animation or tweaked detail, and some lighting changes.

Beyond the game's visuals, the meat of our demo focused on the gameplay. Our first test was with Juri who played pretty much like we expected--fast but not a powerhouse. The various special moves we saw demoed in Japan were easy to pull off and not too hard to chain together. She's a flashy character who can dole out a decent amount of damage if she's played aggressively and can keep an opponent off balance. However, the party ends quickly if she starts taking hits. The lithe fighter has a pretty glassy jaw, which makes it maddening to try to go toe-to-toe with the heavier hitters in the game, such as Guile and T.Hawk. Her super and ultra moves help even the odds but currently require some very specific setup to do the max amount of damage. On the other end of the spectrum is T.Hawk who felt pretty familiar. The burly Native American isn't very fast but hits like a truck. Hawk's modest array of special moves, air charges, and throws should be familiar to fans of the series.

From the look of things in the demo we played, Hawk's classic moves all seem to be back and performed with the same controller motions. It's interesting to note that it seems easier to pull off his storm hammer grab. His supers and ultras were all nicely flashy, as well as capable of doing a respectable amount of damage. So far, T.Hawk feels like he's made a good transition to the SFIV system. He still has the same strengths and weakness in balance that he always did, with the current notable exception of the easier storm hammer. Finally, Dee Jay seems to be in the same boat as T.Hawk, with a familiar feel, as well as the same pluses and minuses. We tried his classic moves, dread kicks, projectiles, and hyperfist, which all came off without a hitch. The sweatpants-wearing kickboxer's supers and ultras were the most forgiving of the three new characters we tried, although they didn't do as much as we would have liked. We tried each character's taunts, which were decent (Juri), bland (T.Hawk), and goofy (Dee Jay). The demo version we tried only had one taunt for each character, but the final game is set to include more.

Come on. You know you missed those pants. MAXIMUM!

While we weren't able to check it out ourselves, we got briefed on some of the new content we weren't seeing, such as the car and barrel bonus stages, which will stay faithful to those seen in the various Street Fighter II games. We're probably most excited about the various multiplayer options set to be included SSFIV, team and endless battles, as well as the replay channel and upcoming Tournament mode, which will be a free piece of downloadable content due to hit after launch. The new multiplayer modes aren't a perfect substitute for a proper arcade experience with mobs of people and machines, but it's likely the best we're going to get given the state of arcades in the US, so we'll take what we can get.

Super Street Fighter IV is still looking and sounding like a promising evolution of Street Fighter IV. As we said in our last look at the game, we're just hoping the price is right. The amount of content--both obvious and subtle--being put into the game is meaty, but its appeal is directly tied to its price. Super Street Fighter IV is slated to ship in the spring of 2010. Look for more on the game in the coming months.

Got Street Fighter 4 for about $15 and it was the best $15 I've ever spent.

SF don't you frickin piss me off like your last game!!! That was the biggest 75 dollars wasted on BS! I hope they fixed the clunkyness and overrall speed of the game. True Street Fighter players and fans knew and all agree that SF4 was the chittiest SF ever made. Get ur chit together!!!

Read that Guy, Cody and Adon are going to be added to the roster as well. Wonder who the last 2-3 characters are gonna be? Probably characters from Third Strike. Reserved my copy, can't wait for this game to arrive!!

i think it's gonna be the same exact game-play but with 5 new characters. Maybe they should have let people buy the characters on xbox live instead of making a whole new game. It has potential to be brilliant though. =)

i definetly dont like the new announcer. it doesnt sound like a real guy at all so it feels like any excitement generated by his voice is fake. Where as when the original said FIGHT! it really sounded like he wanted to see someone get their ass beat.

Looking forward to upgrading. Still waiting on the announcements for the other 5 characters, though. Eager to hear who else made the cut.

Hey, I'm just glad they changed the announcer guy's voice. That's improvement enough for me.

Awesome =) only rented this first one but I'll be sure to pick this one up, I was disappointed with the roster on the original but this brings in some of the characters I was missing =)

Capcom said they couldn't add this stuff in as a simple add-on because the game wasn't coded to be able to accept DLC for the new characters and improvements. They also said the game would be cheaper and they would offer some type of "bonus" for people who bought the original game too...

My friend's house was robbed and he was borrowing my game. I'm defiantly getting the new one

I was a big Q-mark about this too, but my friend who is a SF-fanatic explained to me the purpose of this release: The biggest new thing is an almost invisible one. It's the tweaking. Some characters' moves are changed timewise by a frame or two back or forth, some damage is altered, bugs are fixed etc. etc. In short, stuff that's too deeply buried in the backbone code for a DLC or patch to fix. And I think there's more than just 3 new fighters, no? And you get a few new gametypes and some nostalgic mini-games. A little bird also told me the game will ship for less... like half-price. Anyway, that's what I've heard. Me, who didn't get the first SF4 but still held on to the arcade-stick I bought with VF5, could be a potential buyer.

i dont like the idea of having to purchase the SAME game at full price for 3 new characters and being able to break barrels and smash a lexus. I really think these should be available as DLC or a seperate add-on pack...say $15-$20...i mean, c'mon crapcom!!!

Whatever...The game may look cool but it's not worth more than 25$. The original was good but let's be serious... First SF4 now SSF4 after this the turbo version will kick off and then... SSF4T Ex4? until I see a final version of the product I don't think this one is worth buying.

Do you still have to wade past that cheap boss Seth? The first game was ruined for me by that character.

8 - 10 new characters? what are the others besides Dee Jay, T. Hawk and Juri?

ASK_Story
ASK_Story

8-10 new characters, 5 online modes, more stages, more moves, etc. is WAY TOO MUCH to be packed in as DLC. Think about it. Each character would be 400pts each as DLC, which is $5 each. Do the math! It's like should I download all the Fallout 3 DLCs for $50 or just get the GOTY Edition for $60? Another thing, it's not like Street Fighter has never done this. This is nothing. EVERY fighting game and developer does this. Not just Capcom, every company does this. Also, Resident Evil 5 Alternate Edition is DLC so Capcom DOES listen to fans. SSFIV and SFIV are made with the fans interest in mind more than the company's. So to those who complain are either "never liked SFIV in the first place," or "sucks at the game."

The price is right, the year is tight, and it's once again time to get HYPE!!! What else is left, but the fact that this game is gonna be the rave for all SF fans all over the world. Sorry MW2 you just got shot down by the return of the true video game world king. And that's not comparing genres!

Nishua

As much as this game would be good for 40 bucks I can't see myself buying it again unless there are more ultra moves and supers. Characters are nice and so are modes but I think all characters should get 1 more ultra and super to help fill the voids.
All you people saying your NOT getting it are full of it.. You'll be the first ones out there. Besides.. a new disc or DLC.. what does it matter? the DLC wouldn't have been 5 bucks to get 8 new characters.. new modes and new Ultras.. That sounds like a new game to me.. didn't king of fighters come with only 8 characters? and thats a whole game. Costumes were 4 bucks a piece.. and most of you downloaded it. lol But you wont go get a full new game for 30 or 40 bucks.. Maybe capcom should just hold on to their SSF4 till next year so all you cry baby's can enjoy the old one for a little while longer
Actually we just prefer waiting for the "Collector's Edition of the Ultimate Ultra Super Street Fighter Ex 4th Strike Fight For New Generation + Alpha Omega Turbo HD". Oh and I've never known anyone that actually bought King of Fighters, let alone the DLC...

I'm still not too sure about this one....... I mean its bad enough that my internet can't run the multiplayer. But now all the new modes are multi only? It wont change much for me in terms of gmae play albeit the characters of which I'm verrrrrry excited about

AdonisX

I did not hear anything about changing the game speed like the hyper games of old, I did not hear about a shift/additon to the fighting mechanic, I did no hear about a progressive balancing of the characters or the addition of multiple new animations or maybe revised and crazier specials, the characters they are adding are not exciting enough to comple me to "re-purchase" this game and frankly it sounds like this could hav been a downloadable add-on! What is the real reason I should drop 40, 30 or even 20 on this game?

Kubilius
Kubilius

Oh yes, I love buying same product twice with a 10 % addon for a 70 % of original price after 6 months of owning the original. And I also love the fact that doing a combo in 0,3 sec. is not enough to beat down kids in multiplayer with a fighting pad. If you own just a casual controller - this game is not for you, unless you like getting beatup without touching your opponent in most cases. And no, i don't suck at Street Fighter, been playing earlier games, been practising on this one for at least a month, but no use realy...

God you people are dumb. There are at least 8 characters to be added, new moves for every character, new stages, better online. Capcom is treating us and so many of you idiots dont see it.
