Super Street Fighter IV arcade characters coming home?

Interview and Twitter posts from game's producer offer mixed messages as to whether Yun, Yang, Evil Ryu, and Oni will make their way to PS3 and Xbox 360.

Source: An Andria Sang article, combined with a series of Twitter posts from Yoshinori Ono, producer for Super Street Fighter IV.

What we heard: Last year, Capcom released the first details of the Japanese arcade edition of Super Street Fighter IV, announcing the sibling pair of Yun and Yang from Street Fighter III would be added to the game. The publisher followed that up by adding two more characters to the roster: Evil Ryu and Oni, an amped-up version of Akuma. Unfortunately, Capcom has been cagey about whether or not these characters would ever make the leap to consoles.

Hope for that faded earlier today when Andria Sang published a report based on an article in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu. According to the blog, Ono told the magazine there were no plans to bring the characters to consoles, as some of them were overpowered, and the developers had tried their best to keep the console playing field level.

Coming sooner or later to a console near you?

However, Ono rekindled optimism for a console conversion of the arcade characters shortly after. When one Twitter user asked if it was true that the arcade upgrades for Super Street Fighter IV would be skipping the consoles, Ono replied, "Over my dead body!! It all right!" When another fan asked for news of a console port given that Ono's latest project, Super Street Fighter IV 3D for the 3DS, has launched in Japan, the developer simply asked people to wait until after the game launches in the US and Europe as well.

It's clear that Ono wants the extra characters to make their way to consoles, and Super Street Fighter IV fans no doubt want the same thing. But given his statement to Weekly Famitsu that there are no plans at the moment, it would appear Capcom has not yet committed to it. Capcom's heavily hyped Marvel vs. Capcom 3 did just arrive on shelves, and the publisher could be reluctant to do anything that would diminish the community that title is building, such as giving Super Street Fighter IV fans a reason to stick with their old favorite instead of picking up the new release.

The official word: Capcom representatives had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus? Looking not bogus that the extra characters will eventually hit the console Super Street Fighter IV in some form.

Why bother making overpowered characters? If they mess with the balance it can kill the game, specially these types of games.

Oh, good. If there's one type of character Street Fighter needs more of it's slight variations of Ryu and Akuma. Besides, creating original characters is too much work. And Capcom's developers should be spending their energy on more important things, like new cowboy outfits for Ken.

Well Capcom has been horrible with DLC as of late, about as bad as Activision. BUT I wouldn't mind paying for actual new characters, just make it an understandable price. This might be the first DLC I actually get from Capcom since it's the only DLC for the game that's actually worth paying for (depending on price).

i agree with grey fox1984.

I'm a big advocate against over priced DLC, but Capcom could charge just about anything for new SFIV characters; I'd kill for another full-out edition of it and MvsC is too over the top

@cardjoda No no you misunderstand, if they charged us ten dollars for a pack of new characters we would be getting something worthwhile for our money. Capcom only wants you to pay more for what's on the disk.

Of course they are. Capcom can't wait to take your money for this too

Who is Oni, Shin Akuma? What happend to the name Shin Akuma? Oni sounds like some Americanized bullcrap name (Yes I know what an Oni is). Anyway, if they do bring Shin Akuma and Evil Ryu, I hope they exclude them from the rank matches.

Evil Ryu was pretty fun in Alpha3 and Capcom vs SNK2. If they do bring those characters they should be excluded from Ranked Matches.

why does everyone hate Evil Ryu, he was always my favourite SF character and always will be, BTW and his ultras look awesome! (check it on youtube)

I'm all for them releasing Yun and Yang, but Evil Ryu? No thank you. I like the evil bugger but I am sick of facing Ken, Ryu, Akuma and maybe Evil Ryu online constantly. No more Ryu clones! Don't know who Oni is though. Super Akuma? *sigh* Nuff said.

I would've wanted Elena over Yun & Yang. The palette swapped Shoto's I can do without. I'll pass on this one.

Evil Ryu and Shin Akuma are a waste of time and money.

Okay maybe its just me but I don't see how releasing DLC characters for SSFIV would detract from any momentum MvC3 has. I mean just because I have MvC3 and SSFIV doesn't mean I neglect playing one or the other so if DLC characters for SSFIV came out I wouldn't just up and stop playing MvC3. Also even though both the games are fighting games they both have drastically different gameplay styles so I dont see how DLC being released for one game would magically make a person not want to go out and purchase the other game.

Just make sure to balance them then.

Why is this even an issue? They're already in the arcade version. It doesn't seem like releasing them as dlc would be so difficult. Unless Capcom doesn't like getting more money from something they've already made. Besides, when's the last time your local arcade got any sort of new machine? Oh yeah! They don't get new machines because real arcades don't freakin exist anymore!!!

I kind of hope the new characters make it to the consoles, but it distresses me to hear that they aren't balanced.

THis is way cool, but alas I have stopped playing SSFIV for a bit. This will pull me back in though. GET HYPE!

I wouldn't think I'd download them. I'm happy with the ten new/old characters they added for SSFIV at release.

Ame-no-Tenshi

I'd download them if they were released as DLC and not if they were a completely separate game for them. Super Super Street Fighter 4? I don't have that kind of money!

Good news. I'd download them. I would like to see a few more characters who aren't Shotos, though.

I have the original SF4 and I was wondering about this myself, I wonder if they're gonna make another edition or have DLC for SSF4. Either way looks like I might be getting another Street Fighter.

Personally, I think Capcom will be too busy with MvC3 to go back & add stuff for SSFIV.

Don't mind this article. AE is coming soon as a DLC. It's hilarious how much more the SF gaming community websites knows over GameSpot. Shame shame.
