Super Star Soldier hits Wii

Scrolling TurboGrafx-16 shooter arrives on Nintendo's new system by way of the Virtual Console.

Before the Wii arrived in stores last week, Nintendo said it would add new titles to its Virtual Console downloadable game service each Monday following the launch. Yesterday one new title arrived on the Virtual Console, the 1990 TurboGrafx-16 shooter Super Star Soldier.

A vertically scrolling sci-fi shoot-'em-up, Super Star Soldier is being offered for 600 Wii points ($6). Developed by Hudson, the game offers players a number of genre staples, including spread cannon, flame thrower, and electricity gun power-ups, as well as homing missiles and satellite ships to absorb stray enemy fire.

Super Star Soldier brings the number of Virtual Console games available to 15, with a total of 30 expected to be up on the service by the end of the year. The game is rated E for Everyone.

Ha Ha SSS was my life, being the regional Hudson Caravan champ and all. Gun Hed(Blazing Laser?) and Soldier Blade were excellent too.

To TheClaw135: The only old-school green-screen GB games that I've seen in a collection is a collection for GBA (I believe) of the first 4(?) Mega Man games that came out on the green-screen. That's the only one I know about. I know it exists....but don't remember exact details, since I wasn't that interested.

Change the odds of a Banjo-Kazooie VC release from "slim" to "none." Rare is readying a B-K game for the Xbox 360; a teaser trailer is on Marketplace. As to Power Drift, I never saw it on the Genesis. It's a graphics powerhouse (for its day) so I don't think the Gen could do it justice. The Wii certainly could, but it appears to be out of the scope of the Virtual Console's current design/intent. Now, Xbox Live Marketplace, on the other hand ... hmmm ...

Never heard about it.... is it cool?

Keep them coming. You know what would be fun? Power Drift! Oh, man! That was a TurboDuo and Sega Saturn game.

Uh... XBL arcade wasn't only for 360, it also had games on the first Xbox. Now how about some original green-screen Gameboy games?? To my knowledge, no game from that platorm has ever LEGALLY appeared in a single compilation, direct port, or been emulated. None. Not anywhere on Earth, even Japanese ones! GBA however has. The three starring what is called Phoenix Wright here are on PC in Asia.

Well, they are obviously doing better than a game a week, since they've added Golden Axe and Ecco the Dolphin just now.

@puablo I always thought that ToeJam was 2 words... Oh well. I thought we were supposed to get a few games every month instead of one every monday. I still want them to add some sort of demo thing.

If they're going to hit 30 games by the end of the year, then they're going to have to do better than one game a week as there's only one month left in the year! Good thing Super Star Soldier is fun, too bad it's insanely difficult.

"they bring out a vc game every week after launch... there are limited vc games that could possibly come out, so they're lying lol " You really have no idea how big the libraries for the legacy systems are, do you? The SNES alone could provide a game a week until the sun exploded.

zzatlantazz, Banjo-Kazooie may never get a release on the VC. Unfortunately, it's a game by Rare, which is now owned by Micro$oft. The N64 Donkey Kong should eventually arrive, tho' (another Rare game -- a personal fav of mine) -- Nintendo holds all the rights to DK.

i understand only one game a week, but why are they putting games out thst no one cares about? Where is Finbal Fantasy? That should have been a launch title. Where is Super Mario World? Kirby? Come on Nintendo, you know what we want. Or is it because they can only put out first party games? Answers, answers, answers.

I gather the reason for the pace of the release is due to compatibility testing as well as preparing the on-line manual and guides. It seems reasonable, and I'm satisified with the release schedule if it means polished products. I tried Sonix the other day and it worked very well. One feature request I would have would be to make purchases with a credit card tied to your Nintendo account. I wouldn't want to store the CC info on the Wii (in case it gets stolen), but I'm comfortable with having it stored online at the Nintendo site. A simple password protected authentication before making purchases would be adequate.

I'm sure they are wanting to make sure the games work perfectly before posting them up, so some weeks we might only have one while other weeks we might get 10.

I want to know why they don't have like 100's of games rather then 10's of games. It shouldn't be to hard. Take a emulator and adapt it to the Wii.

"meh, Xbox live arcade copycat... " Funny, considering Nintendo had announced the VC service clear before XBL arcade was announced. Also, don't expect Goldeneye or Jet Force Gemini, as Nintendo has almost 0% chance of gettting the license for either.
