Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS -- Meta Knight Confirmed, Special Move Changed

His glide is now gone, and the attack slashes opponents twice while spinning in a loop.

Today, Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS game director Masahiro Sakurai announced that Kirby franchise character Meta Knight has joined the roster for the upcoming mascot fighting game. This is not Meta Knight's first appearance in a Smash Bros. game, as he was also featured in 2008's Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii.

The version of Meta Knight in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS has been changed significantly, Sakurai writes on Miiverse. "Meta Knight's Up Special Move, Shuttle Loop, changed quite a bit in this game," Sakurai says. "The glide is gone, and the attack slashes opponents twice while spinning in a large loop. This has turned into a highly technical and effective move."

Meta Knight was deemed too powerful for competitive play in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and was thus barred from official competitions.

In other Super Smash Bros. news, Nintendo today announced a lovely-looking 3DS XL bundle for Europe, which I certainly hope finds its way to North America some day. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS launches on October 3, while the Wii U version is coming sometime later this year.

Meta Knight for Super Smash Bros. brings the game's total roster to 37 characters, ten of which are new to the series. You can see the full roster below, with fighters new to the franchise in bold.

So can he not glide at all, or just not from the Up-B?

I still don't know if anyone asked for Bayonetta as a playable character, I hope that they're keeping her for last to boost the hype.

@YouEnjoyMyFluff Lol. I haven't seen K.Krool either. Who the f cares about Meta Knight anyways. Stupid broken character.

Still waiting on a King K. Rool , Ghirahim and Wonder Red/Blue reveal.  Roster so far is so bland and uninspired. Copy/pasted brawl roster with added generic Fire emblem swordsmen and other no-names noone asked for.

@desert_thief @gameroutlawzz Yeah cause I sure own the rights to every nintendo mascots.

@gameroutlawzz To each his own. If they added the ones you mentioned I'd probably find it bland as well. As it is it's a roster of the already great characters from Brawl with a bunch of surprise newcomers, which include some Fire Emblem characters that you might actually know had you played the game. I could've said "Oh, well Marth and Roy were no-names that no one asked for" but that would be a stupid thing to say.

@ArabrockermanX @gameroutlawzz  Ghirahim has a unique personality, unlike the generic Robin who is a default character from a pixelated 2-D top-view game that gets way too much praise for what it is. Over-the-top japanese cliche characters. Add to the list the female marth clone. At least Ike played differently.

@gameroutlawzz There's a rumor that Rayman was supposed to be playable, but since Rayman Legends ended up not being a Wii U exclusive, they kicked him off the roster. They had to replace him with someone else, but since the first thing they do is come up with all the characters for the game, it had to be a clone (they're much faster to make).

So if this is true, blame Ubisoft for it. I think this is a fair compromise though, a lot of people wanted Roy back and a lot of people like Lucina. :/

@gameroutlawzz He's a creep, nothing unique about that. Also SSB isn't about the characters "personality" it is a brawler...

And clones are a good thing, they don't take much time to develop and they give you a slightly different character.

@Tiwill44 @gameroutlawzz I think that rumour died a few days after coming out... Capcom canned MML3 when the 3DS was struggling so I don't see Nintendo holding grudges like that either.

@gameroutlawzz @ArabrockermanX How did you feel about Samus, Captain Falcon and Ness?

Stop acting like SSB is only about Nintendo's most well-known franchises (Wonder Red is not from one).

Good. He was way overpowered. He really needed to be balanced out

Why does Europe get all the exclusive bundles?
