Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS launch window will be revealed today

Nintendo to finally tell gamers when they can buy the next Smash Bros. game later today during Nintendo Direct video presentation.

UPDATE: And the release date was officially revealed! The 3DS version will arrive this summer and the Wii U version is set for Winter 2014.

We also learned about the games' online capabilities, new character additions Charizard and Greninja.

The original story appears below.

Writing on Twitter today, Nintendo teased that it will announce the launch window for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS during this afternoon's Nintendo Direct video presentation. This news "and much more" will be announced during the event, Nintendo says.

The upcoming Super Smash Bros. game is confirmed only for a vague "2014" release. The most recent entry in the series, 2008's Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii, was released in March of that year.

It is possible that Nintendo will also reveal the official title for the new Wii U/3DS Smash Bros. game today. We'll find out today at 3 p.m. PDT/6 p.m. EDT when the Nintendo Direct presentation takes place. Check back later for news and analysis.

Nintendo recently confirmed various Smash Bros. details like Luigi will get the Poltergust, the game will feature many items from The Legend of Zelda, and that Pikachu's thunder attack will be overhauled.

I'll definitely be picking up the inevitiable Smash Bros themed Wii U bundle.

I'm very excited for this one; I'll be picking it up on both systems.  I know the development team is ready to get this game out and take a break!

While I'm looking forward to the Direct I can't understand for the life of me they don't just give us a release date?  A release window is all well and good but if there were a finalized release date the preorders would come pouring in like crazy and the Wii U would start selling so much better!  I cannot comprehend Nintendo's thinking in this way it just doesn't make sense.

If this game is good (which is already my all-time favorite franchise) I'll buy the console over the PS4 and Xbone.

We already know the launch window. It is Holiday 2014. To be even more specific, either Black Friday or the Friday before. Duh.

Now can you play the GC controller on the Wii U? Can't imagine playing this game with a tablet...

Both this and Mario Kart look brilliant Id actually goes a far as to say much better looking than the brown of brown shooters we've seen on the PS4 and xbox one so far, even tho the hardware is significantly slower. Will be holding off getting a wii U until I see what  the next Mario and Zelda will look like, and I really wish they would drop mandatory support for the confusing and gimmicky controller not because I don't like it per se but whilst its in the box pushing up the price and confusing everyone, the mass market isn't going to pick up a Wii U and that could jeopardise future support.

@jasinedude  I like to think of it as Super Smash Bros 4 WiiU/3DS since it is the 4th iteration. Not sure if the wording was cleverly intentional.

@jasinedude lol damn. I was hoping it was gonna be called Smash Bros. Battle Royale for Wii U and Battle Royal Jr. for 3DS.

@Knight_Rider_3K  I agree, Holiday 2014 unfortunately. They are going to spread the releases out, and go for those holiday sales..

@de-astroturfer Yeah that's why for few months and PS4 and XBOX sold much more than Wii U cos Wii U have awesome and real next generation games

Aside from marketing, there's still a lot of work to do on the OS side. You can't navigate the whole system with other supported controllers, and the UI could use some work(having two apps for accepting friends shouldn't happen). They could eliminate Wara Wara plaza as well to free up a sizable amount of system resources, as it serves no useful purpose anyway.

@de-astroturfer  How is it confusing? It has a stick,a d-pad and the same triggers and buttons as other controllers. The screen allows for a perfect off-tv experience. Heck,I can even play my games while tanning on the balcony outside.

@de-astroturfer  they already don't have future support, this is like one of what 3 games for it this year?

de-astroturfer

@YearoftheSnake5 @de-astroturfer  I haven't actually used one extensively yet but I agree any system should have a simple clean and intuitive OS sadly no one not even Apple wants to provide us with one these days, but Nintendo could do themselves a big favour if they cleaned theirs up and made it simple and intuitive to use. people loved iOS when it was first release because it was intuitive and that didn't do Apple any harm.

de-astroturfer

@gameroutlawzz @de-astroturfer  Is it a tablet ? can I use it as a portable games console ? do I have to have the Wii U switched on for it to work ? what are all these extra buttons ? is the Wii U just a wii with this thing in the box ? just a few of several questions the mass market doesn't have a clear answer to.

19James89
19James89

@gameroutlawzzThe fact is Nintendo haven't marketed the Wii U at all to the point where I have people like my Mother who bought the Wii but knows nothing about games consoles asking me if the Gamepad is an add on for her console.

A total cock up from start to finish and the sooner Iwata is replaced as CEO the better.

@b74kd3th @de-astroturfer  DKC TF, Bayonneta 2, Smash, Mario Kart, Monoliths X, Miyamotos New ip(possibly) and im sure they will anounce more this E3 the way they did last year

@b74kd3th @de-astroturfer

Well if they ditched mandatory support for the touch screen controller they could drop the price to £189 then if the renamed it the Wii 2 so the mass market knew it was the true update to the Wii they already own, sales would pick up and then it would get more support from third party developers.

@Dark_Mits @bunchanumbers@cboye18 And the dreamcast is dead. Sega had great controllers. I was a big fan of the Saturn 6 button controller. But you can't expect people to keep the same controller forever. Otherwise you end up with the DS4. Same general controller and now anything different will be met with hatred.

Dark_Mits

@bunchanumbers @cboye18  The Dreamcast controller is 16 years old and it's still considered amongst the best control schemes in videogames.

@cboye18  IT'S TIME FOR CHANGE! I quickly adapted to the wii mote/nun-chuck combo because it was really easy to master. I find using new controllers a wonderful learning experience. I mean yes, there exists controllers that are BAD even if you try to learn, but nintendo's controllers are usually simple and easy to use.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@cboye18 lol gotta give it up sooner or later. You're talking about a control scheme that is 13 years old.

cboye18
cboye18

@bunchanumbers @cboye18  Yeah it does look better but I'll be missing the large A button and the location of the c-stick for sure. They should provide us a special GC controller made for the Wii U IMO.

@de-astroturfer @YearoftheSnake5

They're getting distracted with optional features that should be relegated to individual applications. Nintendo could keep Wara Wara plaza, but have it in a full Miiverse app instead. The point of an OS is to manage your system resources efficiently - not be an unnecessary fireworks display. Take away all the overhead created by the plaza, and I bet the system would boot up in a flash without any additional optimization. Simplicity is good. Something I'd like to think Nintendo learned with Wii.

de-astroturfer
de-astroturfer

@gameroutlawzz @de-astroturfer

Yes I know the answer to those questions albeit I had to read up on it when the Wii U first arrived on the scene, which isn't a good thing because you should be able to understand what a product is and what it does at first sight. The point is the mass market clearly doesn't understand what the Wii U controller is, Controller or tablet ? as far as they're concerned it looks like a tablet as was Nintendo's intention and consequently they expect it to follow the rules of what a tablet is and when it doesn't conform to those rules people become confused and loose interest !

gameroutlawzz
gameroutlawzz

@de-astroturfer @gameroutlawzz  What controller works without having the console turned on? It doesnt even require the console to be wired to a TV for the pad to work so you can plug your Wii U anywhere you want to be in range of the bluetooth to make it easier to game on the pad.

YearoftheSnake5

@19James89

It's a marketing disaster. Nobody should ever question whether your product is a new console or an add-on. I don't know what Nintendo was thinking. Iwata isn't the only person the board should consider replacing. A general management shake up would do some good. Get some folks in there with a different perspective.

@b74kd3th Sorry bro, I don't have time to game on a low end wannabe PC.
