Super Paper Mario unfolding on Wii April 9

Nintendo seals release date of ported sequel to popular role-playing game; original GameCube edition still MIA.

Along with Pikmin 2, GameSpot's highest-rated GameCube game of 2004 was Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. The latter was the sequel to the whimsical Nintendo 64 role-playing game Paper Mario, which was itself a follow-up to Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Today, Nintendo nailed down the release date for the next installment in the Mario RPG franchise, Super Paper Mario. The eagerly awaited title will ship for the Wii in North America on April 9--six months after the GameCube original was supposed to be released. No rating information was available as of press time, but given the series' history, anything other than an E for Everyone label is unlikely.

As evidenced in GameSpot's preview from the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Super Paper Mario was originally a GameCube title. Much like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, the game has been ported over to Nintendo's new console and will make use of its motion-sensing controller. Unlike with Twilight Princess, though, Nintendo has not confirmed that it will still release a GameCube Super Paper Mario. Inquiries about the fate of the original edition had not been answered as of press time.

Super Paper Mario coming to Wii instead of Gamecube was bound to happen. Nintendo is known for creating sequals on each generation. Super Mario RPG: The Legen of the Seven Stars (SNES), Paper Mario (N64), Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GC), Super Paper Mario (Wii). Super Mario (NES), Super Mario World (SNeS), Super Mario 64 (N64), Super Mario Sunshine (GC), Super Mario Galaxy (Wii). And the Mario Kart, Metroid, and Smash Brothers franchises work the same way. It is sad that it didn't come to GC so people would have the optional choice to have motion controls or not, but actually in my oppinion the small use of motion controls actually make the game better. Pointing at the screen to view information about objects or reveal hidden things. And when in the air moving the remote causes mario to gain extra points (exp) kind of like performing a special trick in the air. It was a good choice on Nintendo's part, and having played through the game it does sadly get rid of the turn-based system and turns more towards the classic side-scroller feel with Heart Points and Pixl's that perform a variety of things for you. (One is a Hammer, another is a bomb, another makes you run faster, etc.) Not an RPG but definitely a 9/10!

unless nintendo starts a media blitz this one seems to be slipping under the radar. we only got a few screens since e3 06. does anyone have a hands on preview yet? at least there is a (hopefully) solid release date.

The graphics for this do make it look like a GBA, or DS game. I do wish I could get a Wii. I think N's puttin' this on the Wii, to ensure that some of its great series{of games} will further lengthen the life of the Wii, by making certain it'll sell, even if only for certain games. However, I don't think they should put it on one console. Anyway, the Wii doesn't need rejuvinating, because it just started, and like Sony, and Microsoft's consoles, the Wii may have some flaws, but its doing just fine.

NINTENDO SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! why would they destroy a game like s.p.m with MOTION SENSING CONTROLS. As an adult gamer, I have no desire to swing my arms around like a mad man to play some sub par graphic game. PUT IT BACK ON THE GC!!!!!!!!! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! or don't and I will continue spending my money on my 360 & PS3.

I got my Wii one week ago today. Need one? Call Wal-Mart at 1 a.m. and go there before morning, lest they all sell out.

this game should be amazing and carry on with the potencial from PMTYD. Hopefully it still has the turn-based playing.

I want a Wii! I don't have one, neither can I try one 'cause the stores I'm close to just have the Wii console in a case w/ that stupid video of that woman telling me all the great things about Wii, looping over, and over again! I don't wanna hear about the Wii's coolness, I want to experience it for myself. I've often thought that the reason stores don't have playable Wii demo sys.{s} set up is because the Wii's remote{Wii-mote, what a dumb name!} could get stolen. If this is the case, the stores should just connect the Wii's remote to the display shelf/case via those old fashioned spring looking telephone wires that have a tie-wrap, or something around the Wii-mote to prevent theft, or similar cables that hold cell-phones, and only allow you to pull the device only so far from the display stand before an alarm sounds, thus preventing theft. So these stores can't use "Wii-mote theft" as an excuse for not having at least one playable Wii demo/kiosk.

I doubt the GC version will ever go out. First party pulled all other GC support well before Zelda came out. They only sat on its release to get the Wii version out first. You know, it's kind of funny... I don't believe Nintendo has ever pulled the plug so abruptly before, but this is the one generation compatibility makes GC as much a viable game format as the Virtual Console System; like GBA games can still have legs because we all have a DS.

the reason they're putting it on the Wii is because they ditched the GC. The only reason they put TP on the Wii is because they knew it would sell. But i'm glad i got a Wii you guys can play the Waiting game. And the GC is getting no new games forever so don't wait for new ones.

For some stupid reasons, I cannot get my hands on a Nintendo Wii, let alone play it, and my GameCube is collecting dust, so I want it on the Cube, too. Or, I can just rent some classics.

Paper Mario, RPG or not, is going to be a welcome addition to this semi-drought of good titles for the Wii

If this follows storylines from PM:TTYD, then I"m bound to see references to the game easily since, I'm still playing PM:TTYD right now. I'm hoping to get SMRPG:LoTSS for SNES, and PM for N64 considering I've never played them, but have always wanted to.

It'd be cool if you could replay chapters, cause Dooplis is fun{mostly because of the music}, but I like that chapter anyway, along w/ chapters 1, 3, 4, . The Game in general is Awesome, and well-deserving of the Gamespot award. I truly hope Nintendo doesn't wreak a good series like this. This will be the 4th installment int the long running Mario-RPG series{SMRPG:LotSS,PM,PM:TTYD}.Mario RPG's Rule, wish they'd give Luigi some of that spotlight!

I was just about ready to post a question about this elsewhere on Gamespot, and I see this. Great! I bought The Thousand Year Door the Wedenesday after this past Christmas, andd now I'm playing it through for the second time, sine I beat it in about 20 days. I still want a Wii ver. considering i don't have a Wii yet. In the word of Flavio: "Boom-Bassa-Boom Festival". I kinda wish he could really join my party, even though he's mor or less a bit annoyying at times.

It Nintendo Power it said you play the game by holding the Wii mote sideways, using the dpad to move and buttons to jump and stuff. I think the motion sensing is used for special moves... either way, I'm happy that it uses a fairly traditional control scheme and since I have a Wii I'm not disapointed that it might not come to GameCube! But I think this article is misleading. Isn't Super Paper Mario suppose to be less RPG, more platformer? If so, I hope they come out with a Mario RPG for Wii soon!

If you can't afford a Wii though you really can't afford to be buying the game anyway.

I love the Wii, but i wish nintendo did Final Fantasy games. I also wish the'd start selling GC games in shops again, its so hard sometimes to find the game you want.

I have a Wii, but I'd still rather this be a GC game. I'd rather have button control with a last-gen console than awkward motion control with a new one.

Dumb. Should be a Gamecube game. Try making some original games for the Wii, and support your backwards compatibility, Nintendo.

I LOVE the visual style of this game. A platformer with the trippy storybook asthetics seems like the coolest idea I've heard of in some time...

Bah I'm sure they will make it for the GC. It easy money for them. Just wait and you'll see.

"We know you were waiting for this game for the old system, but now if u want to play it, u have to drop $250 on this new system, which is about the same as the old system except it has a fancy new controller. And despite the fact that it wouldn't take much to release it on the old system, we're not sure we want to please customers who dont please us by buying the new system."

I did enjoy the previous Paper Mario releases, but I still believe the original SNES classic Super Mario RPG still trumps those. Why oh why can't we get a full 3D Mario RPG without the "paper/2D" trappings?
