Super Monkey Ball rolling to PlayStation Vita in early 2012

Sega bringing simian-themed labyrinth game to Sony's handheld with support for tilt-sensitive and touch-screen controls.

Super Monkey Ball is rolling to new territory next year. Sega today announced that its long-running minigame and maze adventure game will be launching on Sony's new PlayStation Vita handheld in early 2012.

Designed around the new hardware's features, the PS Vita version of Super Monkey Ball will make use of the handheld's tilt-sensitive motion controls, dual analog sticks, and both front and back touch screens.

The game will feature the series' familiar mix of maze challenges where players must traverse treacherous courses, collecting bananas en route to each levels goal, as well as a variety of minigames. Sega has not detailed all such minigames, but it did say the game would see the return of Monkey Target, as well as some new additions to the series.

The Monkey Ball series has become a handheld gaming staple over the years, appearing on the Game Boy Advance, N-Gage, DS, 3DS, iOS systems, and Windows Mobile phones. For more on the latest installment, check out GameSpot's review of Super Monkey Ball 3D on the 3DS.

I haven't fully had fun with the series since Super Monkey Ball 2. It was the only monkey ball game I played the hell out of. Everything else after that was pretty bad. Even though I have the ones for ipod, they don't live up to the name.

@XeonForce AV didn't go under, per se, Sega just took all of their great little developers - Smilebit, AV, etc. - and crunched them all into one big ball, called Sammy Games or something like that. It was presumably a cost-cutting move, but it also broke up the special chemistry that those little developers had when they worked with the same teams. But what can you do? People weren't really buying Jet Set Radio.

@Rottenwood, yeah SMB3 was originally scrapped and mutated into Banana Blitz, ew. I dunno how AV could make such awesome games as Jet Set, F-Zero GX, and SMB and still go under. It reminds me a lot of Clover, but yeah you're right, only the original AV team could do a sequel justice. Also I just noticed that you and I have similar tastes; we both gave SMB2 a 9.5 and SMB1 a 9.0.

@XeonForce Nobody loves SMB1 and 2 more than I do, but everything since has been a total mess. SMB3 was announced many moons ago and was put on the shelf, apparently for the benefit of the 17 awful games we got instead. Once Sega broke up Amusement Vision and put all of their sub-holdings into a blender, it was over. If they get the original A.V. team back together and make a third game in the spirit of the originals - high challenge, beautiful production, no jumping or other nonsense - then I'm back on board. Until then, I'm gonna type in angrish.

@Rottenwood, I almost want to thumbs up your comment, but I once again hold some form of optimism. All Sega has to do is announce Super Monkey Ball 3 for PS3/360 and I will literally S#!% a gold brick and instantly forgive Sega of their past crimes, including their incessant murdering of the Sonic franchise. SMB was first and foremost an arcade puzzle game with beautiful graphics and extreme challenges and a true sequel should be as well. EDIT: After watching the trailer, the Vita version looks like the same theme as the Wii/(3)DS versions. Ugh...

What won't the Vita have? It's becoming harder to find a flaw or software hole in it's lineup by the day.

Hopefully it's more like the first two Super Monkey Ball games than recent games in the series. The first two games were amazing.

haha cool I love Super Monkey Ball! I really hope the mini games are the ones in Monkey Ball 1-2 on Gamecube and not the lame ones in the 3DS version. Monkey Fight is so good lol
