Super Mario Galaxy moves 500K

Nintendo reports its mascot plumber's spacefaring adventure sold a half-million copies in the US in just one week, making it the fastest-selling Wii game yet.

by

As usual, November has been a huge month for game releases. However, not even the flood of new AAA games could keep the long-awaited Super Mario Galaxy from having the single best launch of a Wii game to date. According to the publisher's own figures, the spacefaring adventure sold more than 500,000 copies in the US during its first week on shelves.

Besides touting the sales figures, Nintendo also pointed to a GameRankings.com aggregate review score of 98 for Super Mario Galaxy, with the claim that the score is the best of all time. (GameSpot's own review was also extremely positive.) The information is actually out of date: As of this writing, Galaxy's review average has dropped slightly, putting it a fraction of a percentage point behind The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Skeptical gamers who want to check that claim out for themselves can try out Super Mario Galaxy during Nintendo's Mall Experience, a traveling assortment of Wii and DS kiosks highlighting the latest games for both systems. For a list of participating malls, check out the official Web site.

I played this game today and I was surprised how great it was. Yes, great 10 out of 10! Best Mario game ever! (If it were the only game on the wii I would buy a wii just to play this game) When I do get a wii I will buy this game first. What is with all this comparing Halo 3 with SMG. They are two very different games Halo 3 excels in multiplayer and SMG in single player.

Mario Galaxy has already moved well over a million copies, too. Most impressive is the 250,000 Wii systems sold in the single week that Galaxy was released. Nintendo released Galaxy on a public that really had no idea it was coming. They are relying on word of mouth, and reputation to move this game. I'm predicting right now, that within 5 years it sells 18 million copies. Mark it.

The wii is going to win this one. It's got innovation and a bigger audience on its side. PS3 and 360 split the hardcore audience and alienate everyone else. The wii rocks, and Mario Galaxy demonstrates why.

I would have thought that the numbers would be bigger being that there are so many wii's out there, and this being a true mario game. Goes to show that wii owners may be a little too casual with their system, even when a game of this quality is released.

Taksteinfloyd I think you should calm down, I said "mainly" party games, not all party games so you got that wrong and a Hard drive does matter in a console (in this gen anyway) and I only said that as a side comment Graphics do matter in a game, how can you enjoy a game if the graphics are too poor to make out whats going on? (im not pointing at any console in particular with that comment its just a comment) and I MAKE YOU SICK? thats extreme, look at yourself first ok? you seem to be going mental over nothing, I was just making an observation, get some help would be my suggestion

No surprise to me. Just the fact that it says Mario on it will alone make it sell amazingly.

Taksteinfloyd, there hasn't been a real Wii Zelda yet, just that cheap Gamecube port which was better on the cube. When they launch a new Zelda with better controls and better graphics, then I'd talk about Zelda being on Wii.

Actually, graphics do matter. Stop with this nonsense that Mario would have been good with N64 graphics. Games with bad graphics suck, period! Mario Galaxy is great partly because it's so good to look at. Graphics are a big part of what makes a game fun. The Wii can do great graphics, but it'll be much harder to push the hardware than use a PS3. Still, I love the Wii, but I do agree it should have been more powerful.

hopefully this is game is worth the hype (since it has received so much hype and has been delayed for so long and yet i'm still not really interested) not a single "big" game so far this year has been worth the hype but still they are gonna need more than this to make me buy a Wii, if they had built the console using a better graphics chip (that actually supported HD! and gave graphics that are better than the 1st xbox ) or maybe a console with more than 512mb as a hard rdive I would be tempted, but oh well I guess i'll have to wait till the Wii 2 till then its the 360 for me oh and just because a console sells more does not mean its winning overall, think about games and accessories, the Wii's library of games are mainly party games that hold little or no fun after your frineds have drunk all the beer and run off, while the 360s games are more than that (and the PS3 will eventually have better than 360 quality games as soon as they become easier to build)

Everyone started off playing Mario and thats how they get into video games. If you think Halo 3 is better than SMG, something is not right and you might already deviate from what you used to be, like a gamer.

any 360 fan boys trying to b**ch about galaxys...... well go head but this isnt even the game that will thrash halo3 figures .... if this game is doing this good..just wait till brawl comes out XD lets not forget that halo3 was a global release and galaxys was not. for anyone that dont know what that means.. it means that halo 3 was release all over the world on the same day and galaxys was release in parts of the world on differant days.

I hope to be part of the round of consumers who makes it sell its first million.

After playing Super Mario Galaxy, I kind of feel like playing Mario Sunshine since I never had a way to play GameCube games until I got a Wii. Now I can't find it anywhere. I hope Nintendo feels like publishing its older 1st party games, being as the GameCube only sold 20 million consoles worldwide in its lifetime and the Wii is going to pass that in no time. Luckily I found new copies of Metroid Prime 1 and Metroid Prime 2, but I'm sure there's lots of others out there that want to play MP1 & MP2. Besides that, there's other GameCube games I just can't find I'd like to play, like Mario Power Tennis, Super Mario Strikers, Mario Golf, and Mario Superstar Baseball, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that'd like to get my hands on these.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Seriously guys, the concept of a "console war" is flawed and just creates a stream of banter against other games... games which are great. AAs for SMG, its a good game, best of the Wii easily and its great its sold loads although I'm not overjoyed since whether it sold or not doesn't effect my gaming experience at all, and yet people on here post as if it does. If bragging about your console selling well elsewhere to a totaal stranger on the net your life must be very very shallow, and I done with that since people never listen so moving on. Halo 3 sold more but I've always thought its over-rated, BioShock and Mass Effect were the much better 360 titles this year. SMG is also great and it probably will win its share of awards but then again, previous awards can be unpredictable, notably IGN and GDC... and theres a good share of AAA titles this year...

Who cares about what the minority play? Halo 3 is a good game for a handful of people, the rest of the world enjoy SMG, right there you have it.

The thing with a Nintendo game is that they have lasting appeal. Metroid Prime 1 was STILL selling on the shelves when Metroid Prime 2 came out several years later. When EA releases a game, they eclipse the last game in the series. For example, you will see mario galaxy on the charts for months. Another mario game could come out (smash bros etc) and it will still be alongside the other titles, inc mario galaxy. If EA releases need for speed pro street - you don't see need for speed carbon (etc) on the charts. When EA release FIFA 09, fifa 08 will hardly even sell anymore. Initial sales mean nothing, this game will sell well right through until next christmas. When Mario Kart comes out, you will STILL see mario galaxy on the shelves. So, its long term sales will be astounding. As for OCARINA vs GALAXY scores, mario galaxy is not as industry defining as ocarina was. Galaxy is pretty much brand new, I am having an awesome time playing it. And, to be honest, alot of games for the wii (except r.e 4) I have only played for an hour at a time. I played mario galaxy for 3 hours today, and im going to go back and play it right now. I hope, that developers will see that games which are GOOD and UNIQUE sell well for a long time. Im tired of the console charts being filled up with disposable liscences.. Sequels are supposed to ADD to a series of games, not extinguish the last one. This game only adds to the great mario series. Halo 3 adds more to the series, but its multiplayer eclipses the last generation. So mario and halo have two completely different goals and qualities. Halo 3 is a great game, Mario is a great game. Can both games exist side by side on the shelves? of course. Thats whats great about having consoles with different goals :)

When Nintendo creates a classic, they create one that is fun to play twenty years later. SMG will sell forever, and a generation from now, when Nintendo manages a new iteration of their Virtual Console service, SMG will download far more than will Halo 3. Halo 3 will reign supreme until it is done again with superior graphics; SMG's fun is timeless.

Who cares what the first weeks sales are? world of warcraft the bc sold 2.7 million on its first day and 3.4 in the first month, now yous can see now Its not always the inital sales that matter. Sure its good to get high sales but maintaining them is also importaint. Well I'd better get my copy soon! =D

I agree with Drynker here, my Wii was standby for 6 months before Galaxy came out i only own Zelda TP, Rayman RR, Excite Truck (got as a gift), Pokemon BR, Galaxy and Naruto CON But it seems that i willbe playing my Wii a lot this upcomin months, (also because i need to send in my 360 lol....it broke right after buying Assasins Creed), im buying Fire Emblem as soon as i see it around here also Dragon Ball BT3 and once Brawl hits the shelves..... ill be playing Wii a lot more Also.....again people saying Halo 3 sales bla bla bla..... seriously i dont see Mario in a soda can....or a Nintendo gamefuel

Dryker has an excellent point. Up until SMG came out, my Wii sat and collected dust. Not to mention it wasn't even hooked up. My neice hasn't turned hers on in months (WOW addict). I think Gamespot should do a poll asking how many people consistently play their Wii.

Not Halo 3 numbers, but damn good. I must say that this is one fun game. Now if only Nintendo can get more Wii systems on store shelves before Christmas.

I skimmed over some of the comments; knew people would be comparing this to Halo 3. Half a million sales in one week in one continent is very strong for a game. The Halo series gets extraordinary hype and almost every fan wants the new version as soon as it's released. It's definitely not normal for an Xbox 360 game to sell that quickly, so you can't look at the difference between that and Galaxy sales as validation that Wii owners aren't buying games. Halo is also far more popular in the US than other regions. First week US sales really favor Halo, but sales of Galaxy will be spread more evenly across regions and over time, rather than being quite so heavily loaded in the first week. Anyway, hopefully a lot more games will sell in these kind of numbers - more people playing games is good. One of J Allard's announced goals at E3 2005 was for games to sell around 20 million copies this generation. Unfortunately few games ever get close to 10 million.

I agree HALCONAZUL, Brawl will have unimaginable sales if SMG is already this high.

Dryker

There is one main reason why Super Mario Galaxy didn't sell as well as say, Halo 3 or Gears of War and it is ( not to get too off point ) the same reason HD DVD's still sell almost as well as Blu-ray discs even though Blu-ray players are in twice as many homes than HD DVD players. The reason is that a lot of people who own the console or movie player didn't buy them because they wanted to play games or movies. I can't count how many people I now who want to buy a Wii and yet never play videogames or ever had any interest in the games I've been playing for decades. Somehow the Wii has become something entirely different, it's some kind of status symbol or something. People want it and they can't even give me a clear reason why, so they buy it, they may play once or twice and then it sits and collects dust until its forgotten. Wii owners are not the "hardcore" who studies and statistics have shown spend something like 80% of revenue earned. I'm afraid if a third party decides to develop a blockbuster title for the Wii, they may see devestating sales because the average Wii owner thinks nothing like your average gamer who the industry has been catering to for decades. Anyways, I rant...

This game kicks butt. Anybody who says it's not innovative doesn't realize just what SMG has done - it follows the same format as SM64, but it does so in a way that feels like an expansive adventure game, not a bunch of small objectives. That's what SM64 tried to do but ultimately couldn't.

DukeIgthorn
DukeIgthorn

I didn't hear of any shortages, but I suppose that could be a reason why it hasn't sold as much right away as some other games. I think the main reason why it hasn't sold as much as a particular title is because the hype surrounding this game isn't as urgent or popular amongst younger audiences.

PixyMisao
PixyMisao

It is a great game, but it feels more like a build on the existing engine rather than a true innovation. Perhaps my expectations were too high, however this in no way has anything to do with how much fun I'm having with Mario again.

just letting everyone know that SMG had the biggest first week sales of any mario game in the franchises history. and don't worry, the games sell extremely well for a long time too (mario 64 ended up selling 13 million copies and it sold less than SMG did in its first week)

Sneaky thinks that it's pathetic the sales of Mario..come on, remember we're not in chritmas yet...and those numbers are from just the fierst week let's talk later in 2 more weeks and see what happens with the sales, just to leave it clear remember that more of the 60% of sale in CAPCOM was because of Resident Evil 4 Wii edition, just to put an example

Good news for one of the best games this generation, and possibly all time. It's truly amazing, I have it and am still playing even after beating Bowser. If you don't own this game, you might want to look about getting one.

Bioshock was a new IP and no one knew how this game was going to sell. I think people expected Mario Galaxy to sell over a million copies it's first week. If you go by VGChartz stats it sold over 750K in it's first week. People expected it to sell like Halo 3 or even better then Halo 3. There's no doubt it will outsell Halo 3 overall in time though. It's should be in the #1 spot for at least 2-3 weeks I would think. Just about all Nintendo's 1st party games sell over a million copies. It's really too bad that the majority of their 3rd party games are selling like crap. Only 3rd party titles Resident Evil 4, Rayman, Sonic & Guitar Hero III has done well for the system. ___________________________________________ metc123 To all the Noobs claiming SMG sales was less than impressive ( in its 1st week) First of all Bio shock managed to reach around the 500k point after a month on sale which was very impressive Second Why do you keep mentioning halo 3? this is a Nintendo thread, im all for -Wii60- but dont go bad mouthing Nintendo ok? ",

SneakyB986
SneakyB986

"500k sold? this is the best that the wii has to offer? pathetic" ....obviously you are refering to Halo selling more ...but in October...Im certain that many people are getting SMG for x-mas(wider audience) compared to all the people who bought Halo 3 when it launched(because they pre ordered it 4 years ago when the 360 came out, and the main consumers actually have money to spend when a game drops). So the fact that SMG sold 500k copies their first week when its a xmas title...thats superb! So just bite your tongue, Im sure after SMG releases in all territories and xmas is over it will have over 2 million copies worldwide.
