Super Mario Galaxy 2 dated for Australia

Mario's latest adventure sets it sights for launch on July 1 Down Under, several weeks after the US.

Super Mario Galaxy proved that there was still plenty of life left in Nintendo’s plumber, picking up numerous Game of the Year awards back in 2007. Last year, Nintendo broke from tradition by announcing Super Mario Galaxy 2 (SMG2) for the Wii, which is the first time two Mario-themed 3D platformers have appeared on the current-generation Nintendo platform. The good news for Australian fans is that the house of Mario's local office recently announced that SMG2 will be available from July 1.

The bad news is that the Australian date comes more than a month after gamers in the US will receive the game, with SMG2 slated for a North American release next week.

In SMG2, Mario isn't alone on his mission to save Princess Peach. He's now joined by Yoshi, whom he can ride around the galaxy to access special areas. In addition, the game comes with a hints-and-tips DVD, shying away from the auto-game mode that was found in New Super Mario Bros. on the Wii.

Stay tuned to GameSpot AU for more Super Mario Galaxy news as it gets closer to release.

It's a shame Nintendo doesn't push for worldwide releases for major titles like Mario etc. I wish they'd make more of an effort.

With most Aussies I know having some kind of modded Wii (not just 'gamers', most of my workmates and family included) delaying a release like this will hurt sales. That's obviously not to say that pirates won't download it anyway, but it can't help. I guess this is to be expected after the NSMB leak from that Aussie guy, but still disappointing news.
