Super Mario Bros. 2, Ecco VC-bound

Wii's retro-gaming service attacked by land, air, and sea, via NES classic, Ecco: The Tides of Time, and Dragon Spirit.

by

Gamers still reeling from last week's one-two combination of F-Zero X and Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting have little time to recover, as this week's Virtual Console lineup features another duo of popular classics. Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo Entertainment System headlines this week's releases, followed closely by Sega's other mascot, Ecco. Anchoring the VC's new additions is Dragon Spirit, from the TurboGrafx-16.

Nintendo aficionados will be quick to point out that Super Mario Bros. 2 wasn't initially part of the Mario universe. While a proper SMB successor was released in Japan in 1986, the SMB2 released two years afterward in North America is actually a retextured Japanese game named Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic. As such, Mario's second adventure diverges greatly from his first. This time out, players control Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad as they voyage into dreamland to defeat the menacing Wart. Super Mario Bros. 2 is rated E for Everyone and costs 500 Wii points ($5).

Sega's follow-up to Ecco the Dolphin, Ecco: The Tides of Time, again follows the titular bottlenose in his fight to thwart the evil plans of the Vortex Queen. Adding a surreal element to Sega's technically impressive series, Ecco travels through time, one side-scrolling screen after the next, while solving puzzles and defeating enemies using his occasionally deadly dolphin tactics. Ecco: The Tides of Time is rated E for Everyone and will set gamers back 800 Wii points ($8).

Namco's Dragon Spirit rounds out the week. In this vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up, players assume the form of a blue dragon and fight to rescue a princess in peril. Over the course of eight areas, players will use breath attacks and fireballs to fry flying and ground-based enemies. Dragon Spirit is rated E for Everyone and runs for 600 Wii points ($6).

The Tides of Time has such an amazing soundtrack, especially for a game on an older system. It's worth it just for that.

You can play Sonic CD on your wii right now! Just go out and buy Sonic Gems Collection. It comes with Sonic CD! "Still waiting for: Metroid Super Metroid SSB Paper Mario Duck Hunt (hopefully) Sonic CD and most importantly... WII WARE!"

I remember when I was just a small child, I drempt that I had SMB2. I awoke from that dream at about 2am and ran to my NES -- it was in the console. Dreams do come true. :)

SMB2 was great and all back in the day but I don't really think I would want to go back to it.

KingSigy : I bet All Stars will be released within a few years, that way everyone will have the originals and still shoot themselves in the foot and plunge the $8 for All Stars. I know I would........ I dunno, there's a quality of the originals you simply can't find in updated versions because they tweak it. I mean, it's not that I don't love the "Advance" releases but I still love the look and sound of the. original versions. Lord knows they should have had a "shut up" mode in the Advance version of SMB2.

Haha, SMB 2 was 'too hard' for the rest of the world :P In fairness though, Doki Doki Panic owns, i love it.

I wonder what they're going to do about the updated version of Super Mario Bros. 2 found in Super Mario All Stars. I wonder if they'll release that as an $8 SNES game. Would be funny to see I think.

Never liked Super Mario Bros. 2 much, but Super Mario World is the first videogame I've ever played, and probably one of the better ones, too.

SpiderLuke > Agreed. Hell, I never did play a few of these games because I didn't have the money at the time it was released. Now you could probably get them cheaper but that doesn't mean they will work. SMB2 was alright, but i think I'll wait until they finally release that Mario collection, Mario All Stars I think it was called. Even if they charged 10 bucks I'd buy it.

If you're unhappy with VC pricing, go visit a library and use reasonably priced entertainment. Video Games have never, ever been reasonably priced, period.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; the prices for these video games are not unreasonable. At one point we use to pay fifty bucks for these games. Nintendo 64 games were sixty dollars! Stop whining! If you can't afford SMB2 for five measly dollars, then get a job. (Or tell your parents to give you a raise. *sarcasm*)

I enjoyed SMB 2 quite a lot, it wasn't mario but it was fun. I LOVED Ecco, I played the heck out of that game. Of course it was the SegaCD version but hey. Anyway, I don't know if it's worth $8 when emulators are free, but ya, it's a fun game.

$5 for Doki Doki Panic with Mario characters?!!! Hell No

Yeah, I'm still waiting for SMB3, also. That's the best one, by far, and i can't wait to get it for Wii. SMB2 is cool too, but not AS cool.

SMB2 is such an amazing game, If I didn't already own it on my SMB All-Stars cart, I'd download it right away, To all the naysayers: SMB2 rules!

Number two, eh. I've got a little message for Nintendo. Take the two and add one to it. Then you've got a winner. Otherwise, it's still a fun game in my book.

I don't want to join the masses harping on the VC title prices, because I do think the VC is great, but I think they would actually make more money if they charged like $1 for NES games, up to $5 for N64 games. Honestly I probably would have inadvertently spent a lot more money on games by foolishly being tricked by such a pricing scheme. :) I only say this because I'm on the fence now - $5 for SMB2, or pass?

Fetch!!!! Every single week for the VC has been solid! They are picking great games. It will be awesome to see how large the library is in 4-5 years or so near the end of the Wii's life. Hundreds and hundreds of games to download by then if they keep up this pace. :D Earthworm Jim please.;)

I rented Echo: Tides of Time back when it was new, and can't say I was particularly impressed. SMB2 was great, though. I think Nintendo was misguided in their decision to skip on the real SMB2, but the result was hardly disappointing and has had a lasting impact on the franchise.

It's a shame Ecco is going to be overshadowed by SMB2 this week. Ecco is far and away my favorite Genesis game.
