Super Mario 3D Land opens in Nov., Mario Kart 7 zips to Dec.

Nintendo reveals new names for mustachioed plumber's 3DS debuts, narrows holiday release windows.

by

Nintendo has suddenly gotten quite serious about getting its new portable into gamers' hands, having announced this morning that it would be slashing the price of the 3DS by up to 40 percent worldwide. And while the August 12 price cut ($170 in the US) should help spike sales, Nintendo still has a number of system-selling franchises in waiting, namely Mario Kart and Super Mario Bros.

A gorilla with a hang glider is really no big deal in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Having previously announced that both of those games will make their debut on the 3DS by the end of 2011, Nintendo has now confirmed new names and release windows. The first to launch will be Super Mario 3D Land in November, while Mario Kart 7 is slated to follow it in December.

Super Mario 3D Land is an all-new installment in the 26-year-old franchise, though it contains many of the hallmark features of the series. As detailed in GameSpot's hands-on with the game from the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Super Mario 3D Land contains both 2D and 3D sequences, where the action takes place on the device's top screen, and the bottom screen serves as a menu.

GameSpot also went hands-on with Mario Kart 7 at E3, and it too is an original installment in the series. In addition to an expected roster of Mushroom Kingdom racers, Mario Kart 7 adds underwater and airborne racing to the series for the first time. The game will also have an increased emphasis on kart customization.

With Star Fox 3D's release date having recently been pegged to September 9, Kid Icarus: Uprising stands as Nintendo's last major 3DS release confirmed for this year but without a specific launch day.

Mario Kart 7? Surely that can't be the final name. It just gives off the feeling of re-hash, even though I would so want it if I had a 3ds.

he price cut will absolutely save the 3DS, clever marketing strategy really, get more from loyal fans, make it affordable to the general public. I was had, but its still funny.

I'm excited. I got my 3DS since launch and I am looking forward to this. Like Grovilis said, they better not be rushed.

hmmmmm.... Vita and PS3 or Wii U and 3DS..... that is the question

Are Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 the finalized names? Sound kinda silly, but not bad I guess.

Can't wait for these two games! The price drop would've happened much later if these games came out earlier. I wouldn't worry too much Grovilis, if it was rushed they probably would have made sure it was out at launch. The fact that they held a system seller like that back shows that it's not a rush, I think..

Hopefully Super Mario 3D isn't rushed. I really want to see what a non-port 3DS masterpiece is like.

@monson21502 actually I do own a PS3, however it is ironic that I have never played a ratchet title in my life, mostly because there are plenty of othergames available to peak my interest. The key difference is that Nintendo is tied to its old franchises and outdated hardware with only a handful of 3rd party titles emerging through layers upon layers of shovelware and garbageware. I used to be a Nintendo guy, but they lost me at the Gamecube.

Gotta admit, this is making me want one, even though I feel like a new one will be released in about 8 months...

I'm glad their adding something new to MK. Now I'm excited for this game. I just hope they have more tracks than the DS version.

@TheBlackEclipse Idk, I think it's a pretty awful strategy if they were planning this. I paid almost $100 more for my 3DS than people will be paying now, and I spent most of this time without any killer apps. Even though Nintendo is giving me free games to make up for it, I still feel a little cheated. I don't think they really planned the price cut so soon, I just think the poor sales of the system coupled with the recent cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 caused this to happen.

Is anyone else concerned that Super Mario 3D Land is coming out BEFORE Mario Kart 7? Usually with a Mario Kart game, you'd expect them to come out pretty fast because they follow the same basic principle, but you'd think they'd take more time with a Mario platformer. That said, I don't know how long either of these games have been in development for. Maybe Mario 3D has been in the works for a while now. I am just hoping the game lives up to other Mario games.

i hope the "circle" joystick thingy on the 3ds handles your kart well. this game looks much better than the HUGE selling mariokart ds. i think mariokartds was on the top 10 list more than any other game ever.

Super Mario 3-D Land is okay, Mario Kart 7 is original as Windows 7. :P

Love the name of Super Mario Land 3d but think they need to revise the name of Mario Kart 7 they can't honestly think that is a good name...but good games are on the way. I think Nintendo know that they messed the launch up and are now learning from their mistakes.

Great, now let's pump out some more games. I want to see what third parties have to offer this system. Regardless, I'm looking forward to these titles. My favorite Mario Kart was Mario Kart DS. I hope this one at least lives up to the potential.

Super Mario 3D Land sounds really, really odd. Granted, it does sounds better than Super Mario 3D, but... It's probably the weirdest name that has been given to a Mario game. Mario Kart 7 - as a name - sounds terrible, though.

Even though the names are pretty unusual, I'm still looking forward to both of them ^_^

They could have named Mario Kart a better name cause Mario Kart 7 sounds bland, but it will still be a excellent game, so will Super Mario Land 3D.

TheLemonGelati

Yeah.. I guess that they couldn't call it "Super Mario Land 3D" because it sort of implies that they're releasing the orignal Super Mario Land in 3D. the only game I have for the 3DS is OoT so, it'll be nice to have a few games worth purchasing.

Yo-gan

@waZelda I know right? Surely Super Maario Land 3D would make more sense, after all it's obviously 3D and also the third mario Land to star Mario (and not Wario, which was super mario land 3 on the gameboy). But regardless of the name it looks fun and i'll probably end up getting it.

Even if you aren't a fan of the big N, you must admit that this is a great marketing strategy. By launching your console almost a year before the competition (the Vita), you can lower the price by the time the other handheld is released, making it more likely that the 3DS will sell more.

Wow. It looks like Nintendog is taking the PSVita very seriously. Price slash to $169, with Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Star Fox 64 3D, & Kid Icarus in time for the holiday season? I'd say Mario's gloves are off!

I got a 3DS for Ocarina of Time. I have been impressed with the graphics and detail it can produce. The 3D camera is pretty fun as well. The 3D is not as bad as some people say it is. If you are holding it, you can move it around a fair bit before losing the 3D. Can't wait to try other games for it though.

nintendo is a great company but really dropped the ball by launching the 3DS pretty shortly after the word about it got out, and without a solid launch lineup. there wasn't enough time for people to get truly excited about the 3DS and for the 'hype machine' to do its work on customers before it launched. i felt like i heard about it one day, and then the next day it was out selling for $250 and no games to make it worthwhile. Now that it's down to $170, OoT 3DS is out, Starfox, Super Mario 3DS Land and Mario Kart 7 (i hope they change that name) are all on the way, it's very very tempting to grab a 3DS. I think in fact that i will :) Good job nintendo, but it's too bad you had to cut the price that much so soon to boost sales...kinda your own fault though :/

I am starting to believe that Vita won't have nearly as large an advantage as some would have us believe...take last gen's (psp and ds) portables...psp cost almost double the price of ds but it had obviously better graphics and horsepower,so people were willing to go out on a limb with it,yet ds (the noticeably weaker hardware) was still considered leagues more successful throughout the entire systems life. Now with this upcoming generation there is not nearly as large a difference between graphics and power between vita and 3ds,almost unnoticeable difference...with this generation by the time vita is released it will be cheap enough to buy a 3ds and 3ds new AAA game for the same price as just purchasing (3g wifi) vita...considering that Nintendo,by many people's opinions, succeeded with the portable market last gen with lesser tech than the competition, cheaper price, and a LOT fewer 1st party titles stapled for release then the overall outlook for 3ds is VERY good! I am crossing my fingers that this will also mean a cheaper wii-u (considering the fact Nintendo said it would cost more than 3ds.I would be content with wii-u costing same price as original 3ds price.).
