Subscription-based Xbox 720 priced at $300, with $500 standard model?

Windows blogger Paul Thurrott reveals rumored pricing options for Microsoft's next-gen platform, claims always-online requirement is accurate.

Noted Windows blogger Paul Thurrott has claimed during the latest What The Tech episode (via NeoGAF) that the Xbox 720 will launch in November beginning at $300 for a subscription-based model. A standard model will sell for around $500, he said.

He described the platform overall as "expensive."

The Xbox 720 won't be the only new Xbox on shelves this season, Thurrott claimed. The writer said Microsoft is planning a $99 "Stingray" Xbox 360. He did not provide any further information about this platform.

Thurrott also shared information about the Xbox 720's reported always-online requirement. He said this is a confirmed feature for the platform, claiming the system's notes specifically state that the Xbox 720 "must be Internet-connected to use."

The Xbox 720 reportedly stops functioning if an Internet connection drops for three minutes.

As for when the Xbox 720 could be announced, Thurrott said Microsoft is planning a reveal event on May 21. This matches up with a recent analyst report suggesting Microsoft was readying a reveal next month.

The blogger added that Microsoft will share further information about the Xbox 720 during two June events: the Electronic Entertainment Expo and the Build 2013 developer conference.

Thurrott further claimed that Microsoft was working on an entertainment-focused Xbox that would not play games. He said this device was called "Yumo," and speculated that Microsoft decided not to pursue this so as not to confuse the market.

A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time."

Thurrott is a noted Microsoft insider and runs Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows.

So I have to be online all the time to play my console. No way looks like I will be going back to Sony.  Microsoft if you do this you suck and its game over.

Here's your XBox ### itinerary... 1. Open with blitz of gameplay from past successful 360 games. 2. Talk about how awesome Xbox 360 was at length. 3. Introduce "the future" with a series of child actors using Kinect 2. 4. Show Forza, let developer discuss his unhealthy attraction to pistons. 5. Show pre-rendered Halo trailer. More Halo self indulgent discussion. 6. Show a long list of non-gaming partners like Comcast, HBO, CNN. Silently quip about the always-on requirement but using cryptic terms like "persistent experience from the moment you turn on your Xbox" 7. Blitz more trailers of shiny happy people dancing, cut in with random clips of main stream news outlets and Jimmy Falon talking about Xbox. 8. Close out with some exclusive trailer like CoD: Ghost or a new Gears. 9. Order Pizza

If MS actually decides to go in this direction they will lose six XBL accounts, three systems and every single Title purchase from that point on. Not to mention the multiple ppl inside of my network that have claimed the very same. I am a mature gamer that holds the butter for this family and will not be bullied into buying a system and allow MS to treat me in anyway they see fit. TRUST ME MS, I jumped ship from Sony to dance with you and will be more then happy to jump back or try another system out that listens to its following speaking up very loud and very clear. And what are the truest of MS fans and loyal gamers saying? DO NOT FORCE ALWAYS ON CONNECTION onto us.

So whats next? Cars? Houses? TVs and simple electronics? Honestly, Used games are a viable resource for the consumer just as are Cars, Housing, and other items that have been part of the fair trade market. Now since you are not making every single dollar from every title purchase in every way you are going to attempt shutting that entire side of the market down. I refuse.

If Sony, Nitendo, and Google have the common sense not to allow an always-on connection and MS does NOT, well, GOODBYE MICROSHAFT. I will defect to the platforms that truely understand what the general consumer wants and needs.

WE, THE CONSUMER, REFUSE TO BE DRIVEN INTO A DIRECTION THAT DOES NOT HAVE OUT BEST INTERESTS AT THE FOREFRONT. WE WILL NOT SUPPORT COMPANIES THAT CONTINUE TO TREAT US SIMILAR TO CATTLE. YOU MAY CASH COW MILLIONS, THIS TIME YOU WILL BE THE COW AND SENT TO SLAUGHTER. MS, YOU MAY WANT TO STEP BACK YOUR EFFORTS OF FORCING AN ALWAYS-ON CONNECTION UPON YOUR VERY FAITHFUL FOLLOWERS BEFORE YOU FIND YOURSELF THROWING THOSE VERY FANS UNTO YOUR COMPETITION BECAUSE THEY REALIZED THAT WITHOUT SATISFYING THE CONSUMER YOU WILL LOSE SALES(WITH OR WITHOUT AN ALWAYS-ON CONNECTION),

I can honestly say MS, if you do not listen and continue in this greedy direction that I will be greatly saddened by the departure of our relationship and will miss you and the good days we had. And they were great. But as with any relationship in human society, there must be some give and take and this will take far to much and I as well as many others will refuse to continue being mistreated.

I do not see Microsoft using always on.  I think they are keeping up the attention till they announce that always on was never going t happen. Then the other bad news will not seem so bad, and FANS will rejoice.

http://www.vgleaks.com/microsoft-xbox-roadmap-2013/    This is not much better but microsoft will still take it, along with Live price increase....

Godskeep1

I've been a loyal fan of Xbox for over 12 years and I'm on my fourth system I play some much but Microsoft had better be reading these trade blogs cause I got news for them: Listen up Microsoft!
If you make the next system online only you will loose a long time consumer in me. I don't play well with others so why the hell would I want a system that forces me to be online plus all the extra cost to make that happen in my household. If you push that hard you can go **** yourselves. Also If you make It impossible to play used disk or even backwards compatible games then you WILL loose me as a long time consumer. Our household is always tight and It's hard enough for me to justify my gaming expenses to my wife so Don't make It impossible for me to sway my wife into buying the next system.Get your heads out of the clouds and listen to what the consumers want. Not all consumers want an "always on line system" nor do we have the kind of money to start a game collection from scratch just because You want to get greedy!!! Tread carefully because If these rumors become fact then you'll be cutting off your nose in spite of your face.

I just don't think consoles will be the dominating platform if PS4/Xbox720(daft name) go through with their crappy new terms.

n most likely XBL/PSN wont be the same accounts as they are now. just like Xbl for xbox 1 didnt work for the new xbox 360 account.  and the same went for ps2 psn accounts to ps3 psn accounts totally new sign up accounts so that new sub that comes with the next xbox would be useful

Dangerous231
Dangerous231

lol we act as if b/c we play off line we are more safer from hackers. when that would be true in the old days of no online at all. but n these's new days if you have an account of any kind online psn/xboxlive/hotmail/yahoo/ign it can be hacked even if you don't ever sign in to you'er account so the ppl say by having next xbox always online ppl would be more at risk that's simple not true they would be no more at risk then they are now.xbl IS ALWAYS ONLINE NOW

Honestly being on the fence I feel like this worries me. I was actually considering siding with Xbox this generation (I didn't take sides in the last gen, mostly just PC gaming) but if these trends hold up and this is the truth I assure you I'll be buying a PS4.

ridiculous. Microsoft are the bullies of the gaming industry, kinda like how gamestop are the bullies of the retail videogame industry. Both these companies should have their leaders thrown out and into a fiery pit. ROt in hell you bastards.

MS Hari Kari

I have had both the 360 and the PS3 for a while and although I use my 360 more it is undeniable that Sony wants to please customers more.  I subscribed to PS plus and I turned on my console the other day to find out that Demons Souls was temporarily a free download to play.....do you know how awesome that made my weekend..... Microsoft never made me feel like that and it looks like they dont plan to.  They want to make it worse. If this turns out to be true Im leaving you MS and you will miss me when Im gone.  You are not the same gaming company I fell in love with.....thats why I have been cheating on you with Sony.

Why the hell are people going crazy over these Xbox rumors. You look through comments and forums and people are taking it all as truth. They are RUMORS and as for the price $500 is about what I expect for both the new Xbox and the PS4,sure how much was the PS3 at launch?

puchthenuch

if rumors are true... ps4 or pc here i come.
but i'm not jumping ship untill everythings confirmed.

I will never buy a consol that has to be always online... internet in Canada is pricy and can drop without notice.

I, for one, welcome this as good news. There won't be repeat fanboi spazzing over what's the best console of the generation....it's gonna be the PS4. (And I own a 360 currently)

Just to reinforce what others said: always online is possibly the worst gaming idea of this decade. The only way it could get worse is: they still require B.S. X-Box live - or PS4 also requires paid subscription to use online. If that happens, certainly PC gaming will take off as people will opt to upgrade their PCs instead of dumping money into a console. What's going to happen to their sales? LOL. Not everybody is hooked up online. A lot of "gamers" are people who come home after a hard day's work and just want to play a game that is, oh I don't know, offline and non-competitive.

The only way paid X-box live would become a viable option in my opinion is if you paid a monthly fee to have ALL USERS ON A CONSOLE able to access X-box live (basically buy X-Box live per console, rather than per account). Also more games need to allow split-screen, online multiplayer. Believe it or not, a lot of people would like to take some friends online with them to play games. For example, me and my two brothers like to play CoD. Playing offline split screen is boring as can be, but you can only take 2 people online with you so you're stuck either way.

Perhaps I shall just turn into a PC gamer...Already have a nice rig, and $500 would give me a pretty nice GPU...hm....

I believe every single comment on this page is negative, given that I don't understand why people think this console will be successful. It's going to fail.

That is it.  I am out on this coming generation.  As a matter of fact I am out of games all together.  When companies do things like these, my life is ruined.  That's right I let any change in anything out in corporate land completely ruin my life and then I go to the comments section of these stories and I make the rest of the world suffer.  Ever since Resident Evil 4 got a 4.5 from Kevin Van Nord at G$ my life is ruined.  I almost didn't make it out of my mother's womb cause of the New Coke; I almost had to leave the country cause of Windows Vista.  That's right, my self-esteem is completely external.  Now if you will kindly reply and tell me to shut up cause I is dumb, then the circle of life will be complete.  Fuck you M$, Fuck you!

Here is the other problem people are not really considering: Always on connection + integrated Kinect system = internet accessible view into any room with an Xbox for someone that can hack their way in.

ROEG-GAMER
ROEG-GAMER

A always online model, thats gonna suck for gamers that have bad internet connections. Also I wonder did Microsoft ever think about gamers who want to play games without always being online. Forcing gamers to have a internet connection to play games is a bad idea, hopefully this isn't true because thats gonna make alot of gamers angry. Sony is coming back with a vengeance it will be crazy to see every Xbox fan abandon their favorite platform and see Microsoft go down in history as making the greatest blunder in gaming history by forcing that always online garbage on the Xbox gaming community.

kik4444
kik4444

The reason why M$ has integrated this feature is because they're mostly focused on the xbox selling a alot in America and a certain part of Europe where the connection is good, but they couldn't give 2 shits for poorer countries. Another reason is probably because they want to decrease the amount of people who use a flashed/hacked xbox, but by doing this, they're only hurting the ACTUAL CUSTOMERS, while the hackers will find a way around this DRM BS and when they do, probably a lot of people are gonna get their 720 hacked, so they can play their games in privacy

I'm Sorry but Microsoft nor Sony has my Attention unless you consider attention a swift kick  to the balls... These are all rumors until final specs for both are revealed these are rumors and won't comment on something that doesn't exist yet... Still looking forward to the unveil nonetheless

Well I move A LOT usually twice per year and each time if im staying the place for the next six months and it usuall takes a week or two for the set up internet. So internet always on would be a definite problem so as which if Xbox doesn't show of anything absolute amazing I'll be ordering a ps4. Other than that there is a the little problem of I'm spending 500$ on a Xbox to be told if you don't have internet well you don't deserve to use this machine no matter what the reason.

I don't believe any of this to be true, I mean, just look at us, look at the comments, if MS did all of that I think they'd finally manage the impossible and make all gamers unite towards a single goal: hating their company. It sounds more like this oh-so-important-blogger Thurrott guy is running a prolonged April Fools joke which wasn't funny one week ago and is not gonna get funny through repetition. If it sadly turns out to be true, I'm turning to Sony next gen.

To MS,  IF this is all true, you have till May 21st to fix it.  Otherwise I will just keep my xbox360 slim and call it a day.
