Study: Gaming docs are better

Patients who go under the knife of a game-playing doctor are in better hands says research.

by

There are a few things people like to hear when they choose a surgeon to operate on them--"I don't drink," "I live a very happy, relaxed life," and "I finished Halo on legendary." The last one might come as a bit of a shock, but if a study by Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and the National Institute on Media and the Family is accurate, it's an important piece of information. According to TechWeb.com, the study involved more than 300 surgeons who performed laparoscopic procedures, minimally invasive operations where doctors snip away using a television monitor and a camera mounted on a tool that is inserted into the patient's body.

Doctors who played games before taking a performance test completed it an average of 11 seconds faster than those who didn't (mistakes were weighted into the final time). "If we can use something cheap and over the counter like videogames to help surgeons, then we should be motivated to discover what we should use and how we should use it," said Dr. James Rosser, whose game of choice is Halo 2.

I heard that every time you play Trauma Center, you're actually operating on someone in Japan. Who knew? So you actually do have an excuse to keep playing... "But I can't stop, lives hang on every thwip of my stylus!" It also proves that the Japanese really are made of polygons... ok, I'll stop now.

"Hey doc, how about performing a Fatality on the patient?" "Have you tried Wii controller on his stomach?". We're getting NEXT-GEN doctors instead of next-gen game!!! Anyway really kool news.

Ya, of course this is the case..and as for the Game hating republican thing, well, that originated with Republicans kicking up the dust of idiot "values voters" who don't think you, me or anyone else should be allowed to do many things..this is a CONSERVATIVE, not liberal, movement, but democrats are trying to reverse their crappy performance by reaching out to these people...stupid strategy imo.

Wow i heared about this research back in 2003. It's expected after all surrgeons and gamers both have to do precision movments with their hands.

(reads mastershake911's post) This, coming from a guy who gives The Guy game a 8.8 out of 10.0?*laughs* anyways, this is interesting news....

This study has been in the news many times, and repeated just the same. Supports video games, nonetheless.

Its nice to see this brought into the light again. I read a study like this a few years back where they said that surgeons who play videogames for at least 3 hours a week(thats right, just 3 hours A WEEK!) performed better and had fewer mistakes then other surgeons. This brings me lots of hope to know this since i am studying to become a surgeon! And with my gaming life, you can expect me to have you done in no time with no mistakes!! Thank you gaming!!

Here are these jerks passing video game laws and little did they know video games can save your life. Ha! This is great. A big F-U to all those mothers who say video games are bad for you.

Study: video games improve hand-eye coordination. In other news: Pope Catholic. I can see little brothers everywhere suddenly fearing what their bigger siblings will do with that Eye-Toy. >_> Now we can wait for the follow up story that says lawyers who play text adventure games have a higher conviction rate! ^_^;

Since there's only so much practice a surgeon can do in the operating room, it makes sense that playing games in their non-work hours helps keep their hand-eye-coordination skills top notch.

Funny thing is, they play a game that involves the destruction of life to help them do surgery that involves the (sometimes) saving of a persons life. I like how this world has gone full circle.

Perhaps if you actual read a little more he would know that the major force behine anti-game laws is,.and has always been liberal Democrats. Anyways,..dumb,.and ignoorant comment aside that have nothing to do with the article it is nice to see gaming in a more positive light rather than being smeared.

that is pretty cool... I wouldn't want a doctor who plays Doom 3 though, thinking my insides look like an Imp.

SO...is it just me, or does it seem that x360's Geometry wars evolved is one of the greatest hand-eye coordination tests in the world? lol...it's just insane. maybe it's just me...

(On the "Republicans" comment) Seriously. Republicans love their headshots, nuclear exposions, and overall chaotic violence FAR too much for the majority of the critics to come from their side of the fence. *is mostly Republican* That said, I'm one of the few gamers who feels that it's perfectly acceptable for there to be laws preventing the selling of M-rated games to minors. It only makes sense...so many of the little bastards just circumvent their parents when it comes to game purchases, and so many of the parents are so stupid that some kids barely have to do anything other than ask, and in no time they're ready to start plunging their Blades of Chaos into a gryphon/chainsawing the arm off an alien/accumulating as many hoes as they can. Honestly...parents can be so IDIOTIC when it comes to video games. Thank God I'll be one of those parents to keep on top of the situation. ^_^

"Ha! Take THAT game-bashing Republicans!" - I agree, SpiderFreak. Seems like a democrat just wants a reason to bash republicans. Unless you're from another country, then it's understandable. I think we can consider Hilary Clinton to be the exact OPPOSITE of a Republican. But that's pretty interesting information, and should be further investigated. I also have an excuse for my long nights of gaming.

"Ha! Take THAT game-bashing Republicans!" Uh, you DO know that most of the politicians bashing games are Democrats, right? BTW, nice article, although like Odin said other things than gaming might be able to cause the same effect. SF

Obviously. Moving joysticks is suprisingly common in surgery (in-body cameras, lasers, so on), and hand-to-eye coordination is hugely improved by gaming.

Odin897

If the test is supposed to create a correlation between having a high-intensity small motor coordination activity and surgery then couldn't the same results be attained by testing doctors who sew or draw or something like that. They oughtta do a comparison test that tests for all those different activities and compare it to that for videogames...then they could accurately say that it is actually gaming that provides a greater improvement.

LordelX

Makes sense. I wonder if they ever play Trauma Centre?

Then why are a lot of gamers lazy and not making thousands of dollars? Hmm...
