Studio Ghibli's Ninokuni coming to PS3 - Report

Delayed Nintendo DS game also coming to PlayStation 3, developed by Level 5 in association with Japanese animation house.

In 2008, Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli partnered with developer Level 5 to create a Nintendo DS game called Ninokuni. The role-playing game was announced for the portable device exclusively, but a new report reveals a PlayStation 3 iteration of the game as well.

Andriasang reports that the latest issue of Famitsu contains a two-page spread on a PS3 version of Ninokuni that has not been officially announced outside of the publication.

The game's ambitions aren't limited to the DS alone.

Level 5 has developed the Professor Layton series of games for the DS, as well as the PS3-exclusive White Knight Chronicles. The studio is currently working on its sequel, White Knight Chronicles 2.

While Studio Ghibli is best known in the West for the films of director Hayao Miyazaki, he does not handle everything the company produces. The studio also boasts the highly regarded talents of directors Isao Takahata (My Neighbors the Yamadas), Yoshifumi Kondo (Grave of the Fireflies), and Hiroyuki Morita (The Cat Returns). The animation studio also created the 2009 Disney film Ponyo.

This game reminds me a lot of Dragon Quest 8 after looking at the video that LoserMike gave a link for. It would be nice to see this game released on the Wii and PSP as well.

It's a big big deal to me. I have ALL Miyazaki's movies, and a lot of Studio Ghibli's. I'd love a DS game.

I would be more than happy to get this on ps3. I have too many ds games as it is.

Yes! I was hoping somewhere in the back of my mind that Studio Ghibli would make a game, I mean even if it's not something directed by Hayao Miyazaki this is something to be excited about.

I can't believe Sony did not showcase this game at E3. It would have been a REALLY big deal, and on top of that it would have been a great opportunity to push the move.

I have no idea what this game is about, but it looks cool. Let's hope it gets a US release.

This looks awesome on the PS3. It's truly tough to distinguish between the animated cut scenes and cell-shaded gameplay graphics. Hopefully the rest of the game will be just as tremendous.

I never watched any of Studio Ghibli's anime. But if it's gonna come to PS3 then I hope I won't see a 360 as a home console in their games like most manga and anime.

I just pissed myself! Studio Ghibli helping make a game? OMG...

Studio Ghibli, Level 5 and ps3! That could only mean an awesome overload in Japanese gaming goodness. Consider me hyped.

*Goes and watches trailer* 0_0 I wants. No, I NEED. The Ghibli input is very clear, it's so pretty, and there looks to be some really creative monster designs. It should be a very unique game, I can't wait to play it. Now, the only thing is, DS or PS3 version first? Decisions, decisions...

Takahata directed "My Neighbors the Yamadas" AND "Grave of the Fireflies". Yoshifumi Kondo directed "Whisper of the Heart" before dying in 1998 from an aneurysm. How can you not check your sources before posting?

@LoserMike: I'll admit to having used the expression 'cartoon in motion' on other games, but this is the first time I can use it with full confidence. Those screens make me wish I had a PS3. A lot.

Sweet!!! Look forward to hearing more about Ninokuni on the PS3! I have ALMOST every single Studio Ghibli movie starting with Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko & Whisper of the Heart. I know I'm missing 5 or 6 movies from completing my collection but a Studio Ghibli game would just be a cherry on top.

I love Studio Ghibli, but I still think they should have made a Jump Superstars style game with characters from every Ghibli film (I know that the films don't all have characters capable of fighting, but I can dream can't I?)

if more rpgs come out on the ps3, I may consider buying it. :) Studio Ghibli!!!!!!!!!!

I didnt expect it, but a great surprise. Although strictly speaking while not directly involved studio ghibli or people from studio ghiblil have contributed to Jade Cocoon and Magical Pengel.

now that's a pleasant surprise. but I don't like delaying exclusive games so they could release them on two systems at the same time. I've been waiting for ninokuni to come out for a long time and even got my ds for it but now it's coming to the ps3 too. I hope they're two different games

First of all, Yoshifumi Kondo's Grave of the Fireflies will make you bawl like a baby. Second of all, Hiroyuki Morita's The Cat Returns is one of the coolest movies I've ever seen. Studio Ghibli is an awesome team and it's a little funny that most people only think of Miyazaki. The fact that they're working with Level 5 on an RPG has me excited to no end. It's a shame I don't have a system that can play it. :P

Great news, strange that it's coming to PS3 and not Wii though as this game fits the Wii audience more than PS3.

I was wrong, in less than two hours, the Ninokuni conference will start at 1 p.m. Japan Time (9 p.m. Pacific Time). Sorry for confusing Pacific Time with Japan Time.

In less than seven hours, Level-5 will have its Ninokuni conference which will provide more details on the PS3 and perhaps DS versions. It will begin at 1 p.m. Japan Time.

level 5 and Studio Ghibli just works out great. Both have a quirky unique style and it would be very cool to see a Studio Ghibli style story in a game.

"The animation studio also created the 2009 Disney film Ponyo." Hayao Miyazaki wrote and directed the film, and it was released in Japan (Where it was the highest grossing film of 2008) a year before Disney bought the rights and released it here. I know GS isn't always going to get things right, but as a massive Miyazaki fan, I felt the need to correct it.

Actually, Takahata directed Grave of the Fireflies. Kondo directed Whisper of the Heart.
