Street Fighter X Tekken's gem system detailed

Game to feature five different types of gems; affects character battle properties mid-match.

During Capcom's presentation of Street Fighter X Tekken at New York Comic Con 2011, producer Yoshinori Ono and community manager Seth Killian revealed the date of the game's release: March 6, 2012 in North America. They also talked about the game's gem system, which was first uncovered at the Tokyo Game Show 2011.

Anyone getting a Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo vibe from this system?

There will be five types of color-coded gem types that players can experiment with: attack (red), speed (green), defense (yellow), c. gauge (blue), and assist (purple). Before a fight begins, each player picks and equips up to five gems that have their own set of abilities, like a percentage increase in attack damage and auto guard. During a fight, players can only activate certain gem abilities by fulfilling battle conditions, like landing a number of special attacks or taking a certain amount of damage. When a gem is activated, the player's character will briefly flash the corresponding gem's color.

Players can also use multiple copies of the same gems; while the activation requirements increase, the bonuses also stack up. Gems that give support abilities, like the aforementioned auto guard, require one bar of the cross gauge per blocked attack. The gems aren't mandatory for a fight: Players can opt not to equip them at all. During a recent live stream panel from Capcom, the title's assistant producer Tomoaki Ayano said that he doesn't want anyone to jump through many hurdles to collect them in game.

So.... There's no mode without these Gems? I don't mind them, but I don't want to to be a factor in every fight.

"The gems aren't mandatory for a fight: Players can opt not to equip them at all" I hope this means that if I don't equip them then my opponent (A.I or human) can't either. Otherwise it would be unfair.

Wii undoubtedly be the best fighter of all time, if not a wee bit gimmicky

Sounds gimmicky to me, but Capcom has always thought outside the box when it comes to their fighters, could be interesting.

This game is sounding a bit too complex for me. Then again I'm sure the game will be fun without having to learn the ins and outs of everything shown here.

I give capcom kudos for innovation, now hopefully it plays good.

This is gonna be my first Vita game if it's a launch title.

The best thing about the Streetfighter system was that it was less complicated than other games. This gem system may have ruined that.

Ummmm anyone else noticing how some of the hits arent connecting when the other character is using the lauchers? They zoomed in on it twice, lol

I was kind of wary about this gem system when I first heard about it, but the way it's explained here, with gems needing activation requirements, it sounds almost like a different, secondary take on the super gauge. I'm intrigued.

Looks like something to mess around with during casual play but turned off during tournament/serious play

This seems like a band-aid approach to balancing the game. Hopefully it's pretty balanced without the gems. Of course, that completely negates any need for them, so it's probably not.

Not too sure about all these systems as it will be very hard to balance all the different aspects of the game. Will give it a try though.

oh cmon, theres gems here too.. this aint marvel superheroes... really enough with the gimmicky combat features, just balance the core game so ALL the chars work. i dont wanna be bogged down by character choice ie. no redundant, uselesss, gimped chars who will never be chosen since they arent up to par with other more popular chars. ie. dont put in cannon fodder id like to think they have char and super balance sorted out to be adding more lifted game mechanics

I have my ups and downs about this game...but im still gonna get it. Lili is in it (my favorite side on Tekken) and Ibuki is (my Street Fighter side) just waiting to hear if Juri will make it.
