Steam introduces tagging system for games and software

New Steam Tags feature allows users to create and browse tags for games and software.

Valve has launched the beta for a new tagging feature on its digital distribution platform Steam. The system, called Steam Tags, allows users to add text tags to individual games and software on their associated Steam Store pages.

Users are being encouraged to tag entries with both genres and descriptive attributes. Tags can then be used to browse the Steam Store.

Some unusual tags have surfaced since the feature's introduction, including "Like Miasmata", "Better than League", and "༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ". For users who do not agree with tags that have become associated with a certain title, Valve has stated the following in the FAQ section on its site:

"Tags can be a good indicator of when there is a mismatch between how you perceive your game, and how your game is perceived by customers. Often, this is simply because there is some piece of information regarding the game that customers feel is missing from the store page."

During the beta stage, Valve will be collecting feedback from users. It has not announced when the tagging feature will be officially launched.

I saw this change in my Steam and was like oh no what are they doing to Steam?  I don't even know what this tagging system is all about and may not know for awhile cuz I just won't touch it.

I've already seen misspelled tags and tags from people trying to be witty in promoting or putting down a game.  Allowing user-generated content always means opening yourself up for abuse, and this is going to be no different.

Honestly, I've always thought Steam's "Genre" groupings were severely lacking. I'm down for this.

Please tell me that you have to actually own a game before you tag it.

Valve is also introducing constant disconnects in CS:GO competitive as of the latest patch.

I'm actually enjoying this tagging more than I should. My RE5 Tags: Jim Breuer is a boss, Bodysuit Jill, Incomplete Game, Missing DLC, Boulder Punching Simulator (popular), Let's go get this Irrrrrrving

Lol someone tagged DayZ as indie. It's not an indie game. It's made by Bohemia, the same people who made all three Arma games. Dean Hall may have thought of it but he doesn't make the game anymore.

Yeah, this is not a good system to have when tools can put up stupid crap that has no real bearing on what the game really is.

I think this tag system is not a good idea. DmC and dishonored = bad game? why?

@R4gn4r0k

Well, you can put the responsibility on Valve to filter "stupid" tags, but I would suggest that you recall the joke that you made when you said that you supposedly made a tag - "Where is #3 ?" - for Half-Life 2.

That's an amusing troll tag, but it hardly shows that one is doing his/her "best to describe a game accurately", doesn't it? In other words, you are not helping Valve's cause when you suggest things like this, even as jokes.

Well seeing something like this made realize something, if M$ of Sony were to od something like this, Steambots and PC wannabe etilists would puring down their flames saying how bad and greed consoles are, and how superior pc yes, but this time Valve did first and they are defending it.

Does anyone remember when Valve used to spend their time making computer games?

Everyone! Follow digitm64's suggestion and tag Half Life 2 as 'Where is #3?' !!

Thats actually pretty cool, checked it out yesterday a bit and it was way better than their old tags.

They still need a way to monitor the tags and keep it troll free.

@Zloth2  Nope. :) Even when they inevitably make that a requirement, this is still going to go horribly wrong.

@Sir_Grakul  It's a great idea unless you're a complete dipshit, which fortunately most beta participants in Steam are not.

@XIntoTheBlue  Well when fucktards put "Trash" on every single game including games that obviously are good or have been fixed....

@Gelugon_baat @R4gn4r0kI wouldn't exactly call that trolling and we are helping valve in that we are dropping them a hint where they would best be investing money as most of the gaming community would buy suggested game and valve would be uber rich.

Half-Life is an awesome series, but it does seriously deserve having points deducted for not having an ending.

@dovonob  Yes.

@The-Neon-Seal  i hope that dumbass game never releases , you people want a game from a decade ago so bad its borderline childish

@Erebus @Zloth2 Yeah, I just tagged BG2: Enhanced Edition even though I don't own it.  At least I told the truth about it.  It already has "Isometric" and "Isometric Perspective" on the list.  Oh well, no skin off my nose if it bombs.

@billlabowski @Sohereiam  does anyone envy pc? i think you got that crossed, i couldve built a rig for 1000 which would only be slighlty better than the new consoles, and it would only be better for a year or 2 , so i did the smart thing and bought a next gen console and saved 600 dollars for a better gaming experience

@haze0986 @The-Neon-SealIt's called wanting an end to an unfinished story. Hell, I don't care if they finish it off with a brief entry on wikipedia. Also, there is no need to be so nasty, but, then again, obvious trolls will be obvious.

Tell that to the trolls. :P

As for me, I don't want to participate in something that I do not believe in if I don't have to.

Erebus

@haze0986  You could have built a rig 3 years ago for $700 that is better than today's consoles all while still being able to play games from the 1980s through today.

You're missing out, and that's all there is to it. PC first, THEN maybe a console. Looks like PS4 this gen..you know, once they get a game worth having.

Grenadeh

@Sohereiam @haze0986  Yes because Zork and shit like that weren't out way before those games. Oh wait, they were, and you don't know shit about history. "Popularized" is the very antithesis of PC gaming. It has never been "popular" until Steam. That's kind of the point, master race - not popular race.

Sohereiam
Sohereiam

@haze0986  Don't answer comments from billlabowski, he is just what I mean't as a pc gamer wannabe, one that acts superior just because he plays on pc.

I once tried to explain him that PC gaming was born during the thrid generation of gaming and was popularized first on Japan by Nihon Falcon with the YS and Dragonslayer series and its spin off Legend of heroes.

He started to claim the most stupid comments clamming how pc gaming cames first and all of that crap, that made absolutely no sense, I don't know if he acts stupid to troll or if he is actually this stupid.

Acillatem1993
Acillatem1993

@haze0986 Well then you really manage your money poorly. I build a rig in 2009 for 700 bucks and I can still play most games. Sure I will have to upgrade my graphic card now sometime, but thats about it.

Gelugon_baat
Gelugon_baat

@haze0986

You just have to feed billlabowski with an opportunity to flaunt his "Master Race" membership, don't you?

billlabowski
billlabowski

@haze0986 Bahahaha!!! A lot of enthusiasts have built PC's for $600 that utterly destroy consoles and they will be fine for years to come and if they need to upgrade IN A FEW YEARS than so-be-it. Enjoy your dilapidated, stagnant hardware. Better gaming experience? Now you're just using your opinion to try and win this argument. It's called PCMasterRace for a reason. This is a fight you just can't win, peasant.

@Sohereiam @gamingnerd121 @dovonob  EA was never a good company, and the year you refer to is 1998. in which EA was most certainly not a good company - considering they were busy publishing System Shock 2 which they forced to be a sequel to System Shock 1. Not that it turned out badly because it is one of the most legendary games in all of eternity.
