Starhawk multiplayer open beta starts January 17

Sony rolling out trial for sci-fi shooter in waves beginning for PS Plus subscribers next Tuesday followed by January 31 for Uncharted 3 owners; open to all on February 21.

by

In November, Sony noted that an open beta for Starhawk would arrive sometime in early 2012. Today, the publisher specified its release plans for the trial period, noting on the PlayStation Blog that the beta will commence next Tuesday…at least for some.

The Starhawk open beta shoots up the PSN beginning next week.

On January 17, PlayStation Plus subscribers and those who participated in the closed beta (so long as they have not erased their save files) can enter the Starhawk beta. The beta size grows on January 31 when those who purchased Uncharted 3 get in. A Starhawk beta voucher was included with all new North American new copies of that game. Finally, the Starhawk beta will open to every PlayStation Network user on February 21.

The Starhawk closed beta included a Capture the Flag game mode on two maps: Acid Sea and Space. As for how the Starhawk open beta will differ, Sony said, "We're going to reveal more about the content updates soon enough."

Additionally, Sony made clear that the Starhawk beta is not a demo. The publisher noted the beta does not include the "vast majority" of game features in the final title and that players are likely to find various bugs.

As for the bugs gamers may find, Sony said it wants players to document their experiences in the game's beta forums available on the PlayStation Network website. Sony stressed that "with beta testing comes beta responsibility" and that the developer needs gamers to help rid Starhawk of bugs.

Sony did not say when the beta will end, only noting that it will close "when the game is good and ready." For more on Starhawk, check out GameSpot's two beta walkthrough videos with Sony senior producer Harvard Bonin, embedded below.

@Orpheus_Evo Heh.. well yeah.. There wasn't a tutorial when I was in the private Beta, but the public Beta I don't know. I can play it but I haven't been on yet, too engrossed with Uncharted 3! If there isn't a tutorial I'll talk you through it via messages on PSN, give you the lowdown :) With regards to finding me on games I'll just pick one and tell you which one I'm in. It's fairly hit and miss with regards to playing with friends but then it is only a Beta, not a demo. Headsets are enabled though so I'll make sure to have mine on :P I'm out tonight but will try to come on when I'm back in, about 9pm UK time, depends which country you're from though!

@warhawk-geeby I didn't played it yet... I was waiting for your response. ;) I have A LOT of games going on right now, so I wasn't in a hurry to jump in aboard an unknown one. =P Ok, one last thing: there's some kind of tutorial or something? How would I know what the heck to do? If the answer is "NO", I have 2 more questions: there's some kind of chat available? and HOW DO I FIND YOU!!??? I will DEFINITELY add you... so I guess any other question I'll ask via PSN. =)

@Orpheus_Evo I'd imagine you've played it by now? You'll have to forgive me, I only come on here on my lunch-break at work. Last tips/advice for a noob? Don't hold down shoot, use burst fire! There's a slight aim assist as well so keep tapping L1 (zooms in the aim) followed by R1. Keep repeating for a 'brap brap' style of gunplay for accuracy :) I'd imagine you'll get absolutely owned first time round, there's a lot of problems at the moment with jetpacks hovering above and nailing people when they spawn. However with this being a Beta they're currently looking at ways to fix it. You also need to remember that with this being a Beta you'll have to be patient. Although the quality is spot on already there are still tons of things to be added. You're essentially getting an online multiplayer demo with two maps and limited vehicles. It's practically an every man for himself kinda game except in teams. Don't go crazy building walls around your flag as this will annoy the veterans, all you need is a couple of turrets and a well placed bunker and it should defend itself. The bunker provides a lot of weapons so run in as soon as you see one and get yourself an RPG :D Add me if you wish and i'll tag along, PSN = Geeby Sound!

@warhawk-geeby Heck, you sold me the game, man! I've already downloaded the Beta... currently installing. ;) I saw a little bit of it on Pulse also...and I found it very VERY interesting. :P So... any last tip or advice for a noob? To tell you the truth, I'm a little bit TERRIFIED about online "Piracy" (that's how I call the online morons that don't let you even try a new game... they just tear you apart as soon as you step inside the game world... Bastards!). The Beta lets you try the offline mode also... or, if that's not the case, how "forgiving" is the Starhawk's community to new players? If you know what I mean... :( One last thing: Can you play with others, kinda like a Co-op mode? So, for instance, can I ally myself with some veteran, while I build my base (it's a base, right? Or are just random unit-producing buildings?), and then smash everything and everyone together? Or is just an "Every-Man-For-Himself" kind of deal? And thanks again for all of this... *THUMBS UP*

@Orpheus_Evo No worries :) The game has single player offline, multiplayer online, and a horde-style multiplayer mode for both offline and online. In the campaign you play as Emmett, where as online/horde you just play as a random soldier - either 'Rifter' (the human miners) or Outcast (the bad guys). Online you'll get the opportunity to edit your player and loadout - including their appearance. Clothes can be changed, clan tags made (visible on clothing) and even vehicle paint jobs modified. Control wise it's pretty straightforward, like any other 3rd person shooter. Run around and aim using both sticks and shoot being R1. To enter build mode you just hold down triangle, whilst in build mode you can still move around but the view is raised slightly, almost birds-eye-view (not quite command and conquer though, more zoomed in and slightly behind thankfully). You use the right stick to highlight the building you want, click X, then select where you want to drop using right stick to aim, then click X again to confirm. In then drops from the sky in a beautiful flaming container (which can crush people).a You can build anywhere where you have a 'zone'. Although walls and turrets can be put wherever (literally). Building-wise you get lots of options: bunkers, jeeps, turrets, AA guns, jet pack dispensers, walls, gates, hawk-pads, APC garages, bubble shields and base expansions. Base expansions allow you to build other bases and let your buddies spawn by you.

@warhawk-geeby Sorry for the delay... ISP problems. Thanks for your kindness in (finally!) giving some USEFUL info. So... from your words I'm a little confused: the game has a Single Player Mode!? I thought it only had Online ones. o_O One other thing: so, you play as Emmett, then? Or is he only a NPC? And, what kind of controls it have? You "move" some kind of "player" (i.e. Emmett) or you control the action via a C&C kind of scheme? Thanks.

@steelmouth I don't think Sony will give up their exclusives any time soon, it's the only thing they have over Microsoft!

@Orpheus_Evo Right, quick run down.. In the far far future when man has explored space a new source of power has been found called Rift Enegry - it's highly explosive stuff which needs to be mined out of geysers in the crust of planets. Problem is exposure to Rift Energy destroys the human body and essentially makes people mutants (known as the Outcast). The Outcast are violent folk that don't much like visitors and will do anything to protect their Rift. The game is focused on Emmett Graves, he and his brother used to be miners but were both involved in an accident, Emmett came out the better off but half mutated, whereas his brother is unknown (cue final boss to the game :P) The gameplay is made up of Emmett being a mercenary and travelling across the far reaches of space trying to help the human survivors that are battling the Outcast for the Rift. The gameplay however has merged both RTS and Shooter so we're left with a Command and Conquer Warhawk effectively but in 3rd person. You can build bases, vehicles and gun emplacements and need to help the lil humans to either escape or control their region. Allll the videos on here are of multiplayer though - hence not being very descriptive. Basically off-line it's RTS/3rd person shooter save the universe campaign. and online its a crazy 32 player, 16 to a team build and battle scenario. Want any more info just ask :D

@007nikster5 That doesn't give me the info I want...it just kinda shows me the gameplay. Doesn't answer why is so "good"...and why (as GS says) it was so much "anticipated"...

Can someone PLEASE just tell me what the heck is Starhawk?? (I know it's a game, blah, blah... the sequel to Warhawk, etc. etc.) What I mean is: what kind of game is? I didn't play Warhawk (yeah, I'm THAT guy) and I don't have ANY idea what's the game about...and especially, WHY is there so much hype about it? Thanks.

I hope they're gonna improve the game a lot. I found everything to be vastly unbalanced in CB. I'll definitively give it another shot, though.

Starhawk looks promising, the closed Beta was a great experience and the new changes are very welcoming. I didn't think base building mixed with FPS would be fun, but it adds just the right amount of strategy to the game to make it a lot more fun. My only gripe about the game are the Warhawks, they have had a bit of an overhaul, I miss the hover mode.. Other than that, i'll still be picking this game up once it's released.
